The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Amaewhule made the switch on Friday alongside 15 other lawmakers.

He said their decision was driven by what he described as a “clear division” within the PDP.

The development comes months after heightened political tension in Rivers State, following the crisis that erupted between the state government and the legislature earlier in the year.

Why Trump-Led US Slams Visa Restrictions on Nigeria—Timi Frank

0

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has explained that the United States, led by President Donald Trump, recently slammed visa restrictions on Nigeria due to the country’s reluctance to decisively confront terrorism and its sponsors.

Frank made this known in a statement on Friday.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the US introduced a policy to restrict visas for terrorism financiers and sympathizers in Nigeria.

Reacting Frank commended U.S. President Trump and members of Congress for measures aimed at addressing terror financing linked to Nigeria.

He said the move has placed pressure on Nigerian authorities to act more transparently on issues of insecurity.

Frank described the action as “a welcome development” and a sign of the U.S. government’s commitment to global security efforts.

According to Frank, the visa restrictions represent significant international pressure that he believes has compelled Nigerian authorities to revisit longstanding concerns about terror financing.

He also criticized the Nigerian government for failure to publicly release details of terror financiers allegedly identified by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during previous investigations.

He claimed political interference has hindered progress in naming and prosecuting such individuals.

Frank argued that corruption and political interests have weakened Nigeria’s response to rising insecurity, despite the country having the capacity to address the challenge.

He further urged the U.S. government to be cautious in sharing intelligence with Nigerian authorities until there is full public disclosure of the reported list of terror sponsors and assurances of accountability.

“Let it be clearly stated: if President Trump had not stepped in, Nigeria’s leaders would still be looking the other way,” Frank declared.

“Their intervention has exposed what our own leaders have refused to confront and has given Nigerians renewed hope that this nightmare can end.”

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has again reduced the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), marking the second downward review in less than a week.

A Nigerian Newssphere  correspondent who monitored several NNPCL retail stations in Abuja on Thursday confirmed that the new pump price has been adjusted to N920 per litre, down from the previous N930, reflecting a N10 reduction.

The revised price took effect across NNPCL outlets in Gwarimpa, Kubwa Expressway, and Wuse Zone 4.

This latest adjustment follows a previous price slash on November 28, 2025, when the state-owned oil company reduced the cost of petrol by N15 per litre.

Speaking with Nigerian Newssphere , the spokesperson of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Chinedu Ukadike, said Nigerians should expect further price reductions as competition intensifies among major players in the downstream oil sector.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (retd), as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.

The brief ceremony took place on Thursday at the State House, Abuja, a day after the Senate confirmed Musa’s appointment following an intense five-hour screening.

During the screening, senators questioned the retired CDS over recent security failures, particularly the withdrawal of troops from Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State—an action taken shortly before the abduction of several schoolgirls on November 17.

Musa assured lawmakers that he would launch a full-scale investigation into the incident as soon as he assumed office.

He also pledged to probe the killing of Brigade Commander Brig.-Gen. Musa Uba in Borno State and other attacks targeting senior military officers.

Biafra: Use your positions in Tinubu’s govt to secure Nnamdi Kanu release- MASSOB to Umahi, Ojukwu

0

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has condemned Igbo political appointees serving in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for what it described as their indifference to the life imprisonment sentence handed to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Director of Information, Comrade Edeson Samuel, MASSOB argued that the judgement was “hate-motivated” and targeted not only at Kanu but at the entire Igbo nation, insisting that the IPOB leader symbolizes the collective voice of Ndigbo.

The group expressed disappointment over what it called the “silence and inability” of Igbo appointees in the federal government to speak out or intervene.

MASSOB urged them to leverage their positions and closeness to President Tinubu to push for Kanu’s release. It specifically mentioned Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu and Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, describing both as influential figures within the president’s inner circle.

“MASSOB demands that you use your closeness as political appointees, irrespective of your level, to facilitate the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

We know that Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu and Engr. Dave Umahi are not only close to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu but also members of his kitchen cabinet. Ndigbo want to see your reactions and moves for his release from Sokoto prison because you represent Ndigbo in this administration,” the statement read.

The group noted that other regions had successfully intervened on behalf of their kinsmen in similar circumstances, citing the cases of Sunday Igboho, Asari Dokubo, and the late Frederick Fasheun.

MASSOB also commended Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, and the Anglican Bishop of Oji River Diocese, Dr. Ikechukwu Egbonu, for visiting Kanu in Sokoto prison—a gesture it described as a true show of solidarity.

Reiterating its position, MASSOB called on Igbo leaders in government to take active steps toward securing Kanu’s freedom, stressing that they occupy their positions as representatives of the Igbo people.

God’ll punish those behind insecurity, bloodbath in Nigeria – Sheikh Gumi

0

A controversial Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, on Thursday offered a prayer targeting individuals responsible for the widespread insecurity and bloodshed in Nigeria.

Gumi said he prayed that God’s power would expose all those—whether citizens or foreigners—who benefit from or contribute to the country’s insecurity, adding that divine punishment should fall on them without harming innocent people.

In a Facebook post, he wrote:

“My prayer today: Ya Allah! Whoever initiated or is behind this insecurity and bloodbath in Nigeria, whether foreign or citizen, or has any benefit, material or otherwise, or is even happy that people are being killed, or willingly did nothing to stop it, may by Your divine power be exposed and Your anger poured upon them and punished immediately without harm to the innocent. Amin.”

His remarks come amid a renewed wave of abductions across the country.

Meanwhile, there have call for Gumi’s arrest in the past weeks over his defence for bandits.

Last month, armed bandits attacked Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Isegun, in the Eruku area of Kwara State, kidnapping several worshippers. A total of 38 victims were later freed.

Similarly, 10 residents of Biresawa and Tsundu communities in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State were abducted last week but have since been rescued by troops of Operation MESA under the 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army.

Nnamdi Kanu: Tinubu not law court- Buhari’s ex-aide Ahmad mocks Gov Otti over Aso Rock visit

0

Former media aide to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has faulted Abia State Governor Alex Otti for visiting President Bola Tinubu over the imprisonment of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Ahmad argued that the president is not part of the judiciary and cannot intervene in judicial decisions, stressing that justice cannot be discussed or negotiated in private meetings.

Governor Otti had on Wednesday visited Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in connection with Kanu’s life imprisonment conviction.

Kanu is currently serving his sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre following his conviction by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Reacting in a post on X, Ahmad wrote: “President Tinubu is not a court of law and certainly not the judiciary. The best assistance Governor Otti can offer his convicted brother is to advise him to remain a law-abiding prisoner for now and seek redress through the proper legal channels. If there are grounds for appeal, let them be taken to the upper courts. Nigeria is governed by law. Justice is not negotiated in private meetings, nor reversed by presidential courtesy. The courtroom remains the only place where convictions are tested and overturned.”
