Keir Starmer has resigned as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, bringing an end to his tenure less than two years after leading the Labour Party to a landslide election victory.
Starmer announced his resignation on Monday outside 10 Downing Street, saying he had listened to the verdict of his party on his leadership.
In an emotional address, he said he had “heard the answer” from the Labour Party on whether he was the right person to lead it into the next general election and that he accepted the decision “with good grace.”
The resignation follows months of mounting pressure from within the ruling Labour Party amid declining public support and poor electoral performances.
Attention has now shifted to Andy Burnham, who is widely viewed as the frontrunner to succeed Starmer. Burnham recently won the Makerfield by-election and is expected to return to Westminster as Labour prepares for a leadership contest.
Starmer is expected to remain in office in a caretaker capacity until a new Labour leader is elected.
