AFCON 2025: Cameroon becomes fourth team to reach quarter-finals

0

Cameroon has booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, becoming the fourth team to reach the last eight.

The Indomitable Lions secured a 2-1 victory over South Africa in a tense Round of 16 clash played in Rabat on Sunday night.

Junior Tchamadeu gave Cameroon the lead in the 34th minute, before Christian Kofane doubled their advantage just two minutes into the second half, putting the Central Africans firmly in control.

However, South Africa mounted a late fightback, with Evidence Makgopa pulling one back in the 88th minute to set up a nervy finish. Cameroon held on to seal the win.

With the result, Cameroon joins hosts Morocco, Mali, and Senegal in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

EPL: Guardiola explains why Man City were held by Chelsea in 1-1 Etihad draw

0

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has played down suggestions that his side should have cruised to victory against Chelsea on Sunday.

City were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw by the managerless Blues at the Etihad Stadium.

Tijjani Reijnders gave the hosts the lead in the first half, but Enzo Fernández struck late on to earn Chelsea a valuable point.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, Guardiola rejected claims that City lost control of the contest after the break.

“I don’t agree [that City lost control]. They scored a goal and that is why you analyse the result,” Guardiola said. “Of course they made a step up and were more intense in the pressing and they had chances because we lost two balls at the beginning of the second half. But if you believe they shifted the momentum, ok. You maybe know better.”

The City boss also stressed the quality of Chelsea’s squad, insisting sustained dominance against such opponents is unrealistic.

“Chelsea is a world champions team. It is not academy players there. Top-class players. So to have control for 90 minutes against a team like that is so, so difficult,” he added.

Guardiola pointed to missed opportunities as the decisive factor, noting that City failed to capitalise on several promising situations.

“We missed chances in the second half, four or five actions of two versus one or three versus two. Our talented players tried to finish the game but we could not do that.

“It is what it is. When you look at the stats across all departments, one key area is how effective you are in the final third. In general, how we defended, how we ran, how we played, was extraordinary.”

Nigeria currently without president—Sowore speaks after 30 people killed in Niger

0

The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that Nigeria is currently without a president, following the deadly attack on a village market in Niger State.

Sowore made the remark while reacting to the assault in Kabe District, Borgu Local Government Area, where suspected bandits killed at least 30 residents.

Nigerian Newssphere had reported that the attackers stormed the community market, opened fire on unsuspecting villagers, set parts of the area ablaze, and abducted several people before fleeing.

Responding in a post on X, Sowore criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as a lack of response and leadership after the incident.

He said it was troubling that the president had yet to publicly address the killings or offer condolences to the victims’ families.

“More than 30 people have been murdered in cold blood in Niger State, and there has been no word, no empathy, and no leadership from Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Sowore wrote.

Tinubu, Uzodimma have sidelined you politically, handed power to Fubara — Onochie taunts Wike

0

Lauretta Onochie, former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has taken a swipe at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, claiming his political influence has effectively ended.

In a post on X on Sunday, Onochie alleged that President Bola Tinubu and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma have abandoned Wike and instead placed Rivers State Governor, Siminilayi Fubara, firmly in control.

According to her, the political tide has turned in Fubara’s favour, predicting that the governor would not only secure a second term but also play a decisive role in choosing Wike’s successor before the end of 2026.

Mocking the former Rivers governor, Onochie wrote: “You have been buried politically already.

“Not only have @officialABAT and @Hope_Uzodimma1 thrown you under the bus, the keys of the bus were handed over to @SimFubaraKSC.

“How he drives the bus depends on how much of your pride you can swallow.”

She further claimed that Fubara could regain “the six months” she alleged were taken from him, win re-election, and ultimately become Wike’s political godfather.

“Fubara will nominate your replacement before the end of 2026. Fubara is your new Godfather,” she added.

Venezuela: UK PM Starmer reacts to US military invasion, Maduro capture

0

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said the United Kingdom is working to establish the facts and consult with allies following the United States military operation in Venezuela.

Starmer made the remarks on Saturday during a brief interview, reacting to reports of a US invasion of the South American nation.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that US President Donald Trump earlier announced the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife during the operation.

Speaking on the development, Starmer said the situation remained fluid.

“The situation in Venezuela is fast-moving. We will establish all the facts and speak to allies. Our embassy in Caracas is working to ensure all British nationals in Venezuela are supported,” he said.

When asked whether he had spoken with President Trump since the operation, Starmer said he had not.

“No, I haven’t. What I can say is that the UK is not involved in any way in this operation,” he stated.

The Prime Minister added that the UK’s immediate focus was the safety of its citizens in Venezuela.

“As we would expect, we are focusing on British nationals in Venezuela and working very closely with our embassy. I will want to talk to the president and to allies, but at the moment we need to establish the facts,” Starmer said.

He also noted that further clarity was expected from President Trump’s planned press conference later in the day.

‘Supreme bandit’—Sheikh Gumi slams Trump over US military capture of Venezuela’s President Maduro

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has reacted to the reported capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife by the United States under President Donald Trump.

In a veiled comment shared on his Facebook page on Saturday, Gumi described the action as “supreme banditry,” stating that such forces “do not attack villages; they attack nations and kidnap leaders.” The remark was widely interpreted as a criticism of President Trump’s actions.

Gumi, who has consistently been outspoken against Trump, has in the past criticized the former US president’s military posture, including what he described as interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.

Nigerian Newsphere recalls that Trump earlier on Saturday announced the capture of Maduro and his wife in a post on his Truth Social account.

The development comes months after the United States government increased the reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest to $50 million, accusing him of involvement in international drug trafficking.

Why Trump-led US captured president of Venezuela—Senator Mike Lee

0

United States Senator Mike Lee has explained that President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro was captured by the US military to face criminal charges.

Senator Lee disclosed in a statement on his X account, quoting a telephone conversation he had with US Secretary Marco Rubio.

He described Maduro’s arrest as a kinetic action deployed to protect and defend the US.

According to him, the action falls within President Donald Trump’s authority under Article II of the Constitution.

He said, “Just got off the phone with Secretary Rubio. He informed me that Nicolás Maduro has been arrested by U.S. personnel to stand trial on criminal charges in the United States and that the kinetic action we saw tonight was deployed to protect and defend those executing the arrest warrant.

“This action likely falls within the president’s inherent authority under Article II of the Constitution to protect U.S. personnel from an actual or imminent attack.”

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Trump announced on X, Truth Social, that the US military has captured Maduro.

However, Iran had condemned US action, citing a breach of sovereignty.

Trump announces Maduro captured after US military invasion of Venezuela

0

Former United States President Donald Trump has claimed that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been captured following a US military operation inside Venezuela.

In a post on his Truth Social platform early Saturday, Trump said the United States “successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela,” adding that Maduro and his wife were apprehended and flown out of the country.

According to Trump, the operation marked the first direct US military action in Latin America since the 1989 invasion of Panama that led to the removal of military ruler Manuel Noriega.

The United States has long accused Maduro of presiding over what it describes as a “narco-state,” alleging that members of his family and close associates are involved in drug trafficking. Washington has also designated some affiliated groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

Reports indicate that the strikes included targets at the Mountain Barracks in Caracas, also known as the 4F Barracks. The site is a historic and symbolic complex that houses the remains of former Venezuelan leader Hugo Chávez, whom Maduro succeeded as president in April 2013.

The Mountain Barracks serves as a memorial and ceremonial site and is regarded as a key ideological landmark of the Chavismo movement.

This comes weeks after US military launched airstrikes against terrorists in Northwest Sokoto State Nigeria.
