VAT on banking services not new, unconnected to fresh tax laws — Nigeria Revenue Service

0

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has dismissed claims that Value Added Tax (VAT) on banking services is a recent policy, clarifying that the charge predates any new tax laws.

In a statement shared on its official X handle on Thursday, the agency responded to reports that some Nigerian banks, including Moniepoint, planned to begin charging a 7.5 per cent VAT on services such as bank transfers and Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) transactions from January 19, 2026.

The NRS explained that VAT has always been imposed on fees, commissions and other charges linked to banking services offered by financial institutions nationwide.

According to the service, suggestions that a new VAT has been introduced on banking transactions are inaccurate and misleading.

“The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) wishes to correct misleading reports in parts of the media claiming that VAT has been newly imposed on banking services, fees, commissions or electronic money transfers. This assertion is completely false,” the statement said.

The agency added that existing tax laws already cover VAT on banking service charges, noting that the Nigeria Tax Act did not create any additional VAT burden for bank customers.

Alaafin absent as Makinde Inaugurates Oyo Council of Obas, Olubadan Named Chairman

0

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, was absent on Thursday as Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, inaugurated the State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

The inauguration saw the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, installed as Chairman of the council.

Speaking at the event, Governor Makinde clarified that the chairmanship of the council is guided strictly by state law, which provides for a rotational leadership every two years.

According to him, the rotation was not influenced by any individual but is a statutory requirement. “It is not the one who proposed the law that determines the rotation of the chairmanship every two years,” Makinde said.

The development comes amid reports of a strained relationship between the Alaafin of Oyo and the Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Recently, a video circulating online sparked claims that the Alaafin was snubbed by the Olubadan at a public event. However, the Olubadan has since dismissed the allegation, insisting that no disrespect was intended.

Nigeria’s Inflation climbs to 15.15% in December- NBS

0

Nigeria’s headline inflation rate rose to 15.15 percent in December 2025, up from 14.45 percent recorded in November, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released on Thursday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The NBS data showed that inflation increased by 0.7 percentage points on a month-on-month basis, reflecting renewed price pressures during the period under review.

Despite the rise in headline inflation, food inflation moderated in December. The food inflation rate declined by 1.49 percentage points to 10.84 percent, down from 11.08 percent in November. On a year-on-year basis, food inflation also eased from the 39.84 percent recorded in December 2024.

According to the report, the Consumer Price Index rose to 131.2 points in December 2025, compared with 130.5 points in the previous month.

“The December 2025 year-on-year headline inflation rate stood at 15.15 percent,” the NBS stated, adding that this represented a significant decline compared to the 34.80 percent recorded in December 2024. The bureau noted that the year-on-year inflation figure was 19.65 percentage points lower than the rate recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The NBS explained that the decline on a year-on-year basis reflects a base-year effect, with November 2009 used as the reference period.

The latest figures come amid earlier projections that Nigeria’s inflation rate could rise in December due to seasonal and structural factors affecting prices.

The Federal Ministry of Works under Dave Umahi has earmarked more than N500 million in its 2026 budget for a range of empowerment programs, including training for hairdressers and make-up artists and the distribution of grinding machines, motorcycles, and mini-vans, as well as anti-drug abuse awareness campaigns across selected states.

Details of the proposed expenditures are contained in the 2026 Appropriation Bill published on the Budget Office website and accessed on Thursday.

A review of the budget indicates that the projects are spread across different geopolitical zones of the country.

According to the document, under budget item code ERGP 12234747, the ministry intends to spend N35 million on providing an unspecified number of grinding machines to women in Ndokwa/Ukwani Federal Constituency, located in the South-South zone.
Similarly, another N35 million has been set aside to train and empower women in hairdressing, make-up, and soap production in Mikang/Shandam/Qua’an Pan Federal Constituency of Plateau State in the North-Central zone.
The budget also includes a proposal to allocate N70 million for skill acquisition and trade equipment provision to youths, women, and seven retirees in Inyamaltu/Deba area of Gombe State in the North-East.
Additionally, the ministry plans to spend N70 million on supplying mini pick-up vans, mini shuttle buses, and motorcycles to constituents in Abakaliki Federal Constituency, Ebonyi State, in the South-East.
Another component involves training, sensitisation, advocacy, and youth empowerment programmes against drug abuse in Zamfara State, which falls in the North-West, among several other constituency-level projects outlined in the budget.
The inclusion of these empowerment initiatives in the Federal Ministry of Works’ 2026 budget has sparked debate and raised questions about the appropriateness of such allocations within the ministry’s mandate.

Nigeria accounts for 72% of Christians killed worldwide- US lawmaker

0

Rep. John James, a member of the United States Congress representing Southeast Michigan, has alleged that Nigeria accounts for 72 per cent of Christians killed worldwide.

James made the claim in a post on X while reacting to a report that described Nigeria as the epicentre of global killings of Christians.

According to the lawmaker, the situation in Nigeria amounts to a targeted and systematic persecution of Christians.

“I’ve been raising the alarm on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria for years,” James wrote. “The facts are undeniable: 72 per cent of Christians killed globally were murdered in Nigeria. This is targeted, systematic persecution. The United States and the world must not look away.”

However, Nigerian Newssphere reports that assertions of a Christian genocide by some US lawmakers have been strongly rejected by the Nigerian government.

The government maintains that the country’s security challenges affect people of all religions and insists that no particular group is being singled out for attacks.

The naira weakened slightly against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Wednesday, marking its first depreciation of the week.

The latest movement occurred despite a continued increase in Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves, which rose to $45.74 billion as of January 12, 2026, according to data from the apex bank.

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has credited his team’s “huge effort” and unity with the fans for their dramatic victory over Nigeria in Wednesday night’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final.
