South Korea jails Former President

0

A South Korean court on Friday sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to five years in prison after finding him guilty of obstruction of justice and other offences linked to his controversial martial law declaration and the turmoil that followed.

The ruling, delivered by Judge Baek Dae-hyun of the Seoul Central District Court, marks the first in a series of expected verdicts against the disgraced ex-leader, whose brief suspension of civilian rule on December 3, 2024, triggered nationwide protests and a tense political standoff in parliament.

Yoon, who has since been removed from office, was convicted of obstructing justice for blocking investigators from detaining him during probes into the crisis. The court also found him guilty of excluding cabinet members from key discussions surrounding the imposition of martial law.

In his judgment, Judge Baek said Yoon had failed in his constitutional responsibilities as president. “Despite having a duty, above all others, to uphold the Constitution and observe the rule of law, the defendant instead displayed an attitude that disregarded the Constitution,” he said, adding that Yoon’s culpability was “extremely grave.”

However, the court acquitted Yoon of forging official documents, citing insufficient evidence. Judge Baek noted that the former president has seven days to file an appeal.

Prosecutors had sought a 10-year prison sentence, while Yoon maintained throughout the trial that he had broken no laws.

Naira recovers against US Dollar as External Reserves rise

0

The naira rebounded against the United States dollar on Thursday at the official foreign exchange market, reversing the slight depreciation recorded a day earlier.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the local currency appreciated to N1,419.28 per dollar on Thursday, compared with N1,420.04 on Wednesday. This reflects a marginal gain of 76 kobo on a day-on-day basis.

At the parallel market, however, the naira remained unchanged, trading at N1,490 per dollar. Bureau De Change operators in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, confirmed that the exchange rate was stable, the same level recorded the previous day.

The currency’s modest recovery comes amid an improvement in Nigeria’s external reserves, which rose to $45.82 billion as of January 14, up from $45.78 billion the day before.

The rebound follows a slight drop in the naira’s value against the dollar at the official market on Wednesday.

AFCON 2025: It’s football—Ghanaian ref breaks silence amid backlash over officiating in Nigeria vs Morocco

0

Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Laryea has dismissed criticisms surrounding his officiating in Nigeria’s semi-final defeat to Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria were knocked out on Wednesday night after losing on penalties to the Atlas Lions, following a goalless draw after 120 minutes.

Laryea came under intense scrutiny from Nigerian fans and pundits on social media, with many accusing him of bias in favor of Morocco. One of the most debated decisions was the yellow card shown to Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey, which ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament.

Super Eagles players Akor Adams and Bright Osayi-Samuel also openly criticized the referee’s performance after the match.

Reacting to the backlash, Laryea remained unfazed, insisting that criticism is part of the game. Speaking on Sporty TV, he said, “No, it’s okay. It’s football.”

Fubara Impeachment: He believes he’s above Rivers State-LP Chairman, Dokubo chides Wike, loyalists

0

The Labour Party (LP) in Rivers State has called for calm amid the ongoing impeachment plot against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, urging political actors to prioritize peace and development over personal interests.

The Rivers State Chairman of the party, Mrs. Hilda Dokubo, made the appeal on Thursday in Port Harcourt after an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stakeholders’ meeting.

Dokubo described the impeachment notice recently issued against Governor Fubara as a needless distraction that could derail governance and stall development in the state.

According to her, Rivers State is only beginning to recover after six months of emergency rule characterized by instability, hardship, and minimal development, stressing that renewed political tension would only worsen the situation.

“The only person who serves a governor an impeachment notice is someone who believes he is above the state,” Dokubo said referring to Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike and his Rivers Assembly loyalists.

“I am disturbed and disappointed that Rivers is being dragged back into turmoil just as it is emerging from months of instability.”

She urged political leaders and stakeholders to stop actions capable of creating further distractions and instead focus on improving the welfare and security of Rivers residents.

“This is our only home. If there is no peace here, we cannot sleep, work, or keep our children safe. Nobody wants that,” she stated.

Dokubo commended four members of the State House of Assembly who reportedly reconsidered their support for the impeachment notice, calling on other lawmakers to emulate them.

She also called for a lasting and inclusive resolution to the political crisis, warning that so-called “political solutions” often deepen divisions and create long-term problems for the state.

“Let us live in peace. Let Governor Fubara do his work and complete it, now that we are beginning to see governance,” Dokubo added.

‘A child who dumped his father won’t hesitate to do you same’—Adamu Garba on Atiku’s son defection to APC

0

Former All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant Adamu Garba has criticized the decision of Abba Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to defect to the ruling party.

Garba said Abba’s move was not a favorable development for APC members, particularly those who are parents, questioning the moral implications of the decision.

In a post on X, Garba expressed concern over a son abandoning his father at a critical moment. He wrote, “I am a member of APC, but I don’t think joining our party by Abba, the son of former Vice President H.E. Atiku Abubakar, is a good deal, especially for APC members who are parents.

“I pray for those celebrating to never see a day that their children jettison them at the time when they are needed most.

“Any child who dumps his father when he is needed the most will not hesitate to dump you, no matter who else you are.”

Abba Atiku on Thursday formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the National Assembly and pledged to mobilize support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

His father, Atiku Abubakar, was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election and reportedly joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) a few months ago following a series of coalition moves.

The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) has elected Ogechukwu Nkere as its new prime minister, replacing Simon Ekpa.

Nkere’s emergence was announced in a statement released on Thursday, which disclosed that the decision was taken by the BRGIE cabinet on January 14, 2026.

According to the statement, Nkere was unanimously elected to succeed Ekpa, who has been relieved of his position following his imprisonment in Finland.

“Ogechukwu Nkere was unanimously elected by the cabinet of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) to serve as Prime Minister, succeeding Simon Ekpa Njoku, who was relieved of his position by the cabinet,” the statement read.

Before his formal appointment, Nkere had served as acting prime minister since December 2024, after Ekpa was detained in Finland. He previously held the position of BRGIE’s Minister of Finance and also served as the group’s long-standing representative in Washington, DC.

While in the United States, Nkere reportedly engaged with several U.S. government officials, including Senator Ted Cruz and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, in his role representing BRGIE.

The statement further noted that Nkere recently signed a lobbying agreement with Washington & Madison, LLC, an international services firm founded by longtime BRGIE lobbyist Elias Gerasoulis, a move that has attracted international attention.

Recall that Simon Ekpa, a Biafran separatist figure, was sentenced in Finland on September 1, 2025.

2027: Atiku’s son dumps him, backs Tinubu’s reelection bid

Abba Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a move aimed at mobilizing support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

Abba Atiku formally joined the ruling party on Thursday evening in Abuja, where he was received by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, and the APC National Vice Chairman (North East), Mustapha Salihu.

Following his defection, Abba announced a rebranding of the political organization he founded. The group, originally established in 2022 as the Atiku Haske Organisation, has been renamed the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation to align with his new political direction.

However, the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described his son’s decision as personal to him.

“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect.”

AFCON: ‘Even Pele dey miss’- Seun Kuti defends Chukwueze after Penalty miss backlash

0

Popular Nigerian musician, Seun Kuti, has come to the defence of Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze following criticism over his missed penalty in Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final defeat.

Recall that Nigeria crashed out of the tournament on Wednesday after losing to host nation Morocco on penalties. The semi-final encounter ended goalless in regulation time before Morocco edged the Super Eagles in the shootout.

During the penalty shootout, Chukwueze and Bruno Fernandes failed to convert their kicks, while the Atlas Lions successfully scored all their penalties to seal qualification for the final.

Following the loss, many Nigerians took to social media to criticise Chukwueze, blaming him for the team’s exit from the competition.

Reacting to the backlash, Seun Kuti urged critics to ease the pressure on the winger, noting that even football legends have missed penalties. The singer referenced the late Brazilian icon Pelé, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history.

Writing on his Instagram story in Pidgin English, Seun Kuti said: “Even Pele dey miss penalty. Leave Chukwueze alone.”

Nigeria will face Egypt in the third-place playoff on Saturday, while Morocco will take on Senegal in the AFCON final on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

This is the last time I’ll speak—Davido blows hot on fresh paternity claim by alleged daughter

0

Nigerian Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has dismissed claims that he is the biological father of a teenage girl who recently requested a DNA test to establish her paternity.

The singer stated that he has never had any personal relationship with the girl’s mother, noting that his first and only contact with both of them was during the DNA testing process.

Davido disclosed that five separate DNA tests were conducted at different medical facilities. He explained that he personally selected three of the hospitals, while the remaining two were chosen by the girl and her mother.

According to him, all five test results consistently confirmed that he is not the child’s biological father.

Describing the situation as emotionally draining, Davido accused the girl’s mother of acting inappropriately but stressed that he holds no resentment toward the teenager involved.

He added that he would not comment further on the issue, insisting that the matter should be regarded as resolved based on the medical evidence.

“This is the last time I will speak on this matter”, he said.
