Rep. John James, a member of the United States Congress representing Southeast Michigan, has alleged that Nigeria accounts for 72 per cent of Christians killed worldwide.
James made the claim in a post on X while reacting to a report that described Nigeria as the epicentre of global killings of Christians.
According to the lawmaker, the situation in Nigeria amounts to a targeted and systematic persecution of Christians.
“I’ve been raising the alarm on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria for years,” James wrote. “The facts are undeniable: 72 per cent of Christians killed globally were murdered in Nigeria. This is targeted, systematic persecution. The United States and the world must not look away.”
However, Nigerian Newssphere reports that assertions of a Christian genocide by some US lawmakers have been strongly rejected by the Nigerian government.
The government maintains that the country’s security challenges affect people of all religions and insists that no particular group is being singled out for attacks.
