2027 Election will be tough like WWE- Ndume on Tinubu, Peter Obi, Atiku contest for presidency

0

Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, has described the 2027 presidential election as a potentially fierce contest, likening it to a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) bout.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Ndume reacted to concerns about the growing opposition challenge facing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with prominent political figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Seyi Makinde expected to play key roles ahead of the election.

Asked whether the APC and President Bola Tinubu could withstand the pressure from opposition forces in 2027, Ndume said the ruling party should not underestimate its rivals.

“I am not that worried about it, but at the same time I don’t take opponents for granted. I have said this several times on television, and that is the mistake most of us are making, especially those around the President. They have difficulty telling him the facts,” he said.

“We are going to struggle it out together; it can be hard like the WWE. It’s going to be a tough fight.”

Ndume also recalled reactions to his previous comments about political strategies within the APC.

“As I said, even when I made the statement that we are going to reciprocate what the President did to us, many people I did not expect called me and complained,” he said.

The lawmaker reaffirmed his support for President Tinubu and the APC, stressing that the party would work together ahead of the election.

“The President is my President, he is in my party, and we are going to struggle it out together,” Ndume said.

He added that some of the opposition figures being mentioned as potential challengers were familiar political opponents.

“This is not the first time. Peter Obi has tried before, Atiku has tried before. They are not new in the arena,” he added.

NCC hails ministerial initiative on girls’ ICT empowerment

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commended the Hon. Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, for championing initiatives aimed at empowering the younger generation with digital knowledge and skills, especially the Nigerian girls.

The commission disclosed this in a statement on Sunday by its director of public affairs, Nnenna Ukoha.

Speaking to 185 contestants of the 2026 National Girls in ICT (NG-ICT) Competition on a tour of the National Communication Museum domiciled at the Commission in Abuja on Thursday, the executive vice chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, said the initiative also aligns with the Commission’s digital literacy advocacy.

The contestants were selected by the Ministry across the country’s geopolitical zones for competition to promote digital inclusion and inspire greater participation of girls in information and communication technology and other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines.

The visit to the commission by the students formed part of activities organized by the minister under the National Girls in ICT Programme, an initiative aimed at bridging the gender gap in the technology sector by equipping young girls with digital skills, mentorship opportunities, and exposure to innovation.

Maida, who was represented by the director of the Research and Development Department, Babagana Digima, noted that the museum tour was designed to create a link between the old and new generations in Nigeria’s telecommunications journey, helping young people appreciate the sector’s transformation from analog systems to the current digital revolution.

During the study tour, NCC officials guided the students through exhibits and historical artifacts that document key milestones in Nigeria’s telecommunications history and the evolution of the communications sector to date. He emphasized that understanding the industry’s history would inspire the participants to contribute meaningfully to the future of digital innovation in Nigeria.

The EVC noted that exposing young people to the history of technological advancement and innovation is essential to building a new generation of leaders for Nigeria’s growing digital economy.

“The whole idea behind this is that we are looking at the younger generation. We want to show them what communication is all about. This place is a museum meant to preserve the history of what has gone before and to keep the artifacts, ensuring that people see the evolution from the postal system to telegraphy, from analog systems to the digital era.

“This is essentially what we are showing them in the shortest amount of time and, of course, to excite the curiosity of the young ones. When they see what happened in the past and how it has progressed into the future, they can also take it up from here and think about what it will look like going forward. That is the whole essence of having them here,” he said.

During the tour, the participants learned about generational trends in telecommunications development, dating back to 1886 when the colonial administration established first communication facilities primarily to support administrative functions. They were also taken through the history of the country’s early telegraph services, which linked Lagos to other parts of West Africa and Europe through submarine cable connections.

The tour highlighted the state of telecommunications at Independence in 1960, when Nigeria had only 18,724 telephone lines serving an estimated population of about 40 million people. The students were also briefed on various development plans that followed independence, the operations of the former Department of Posts and Telecommunications (P&T) and Nigerian External Telecommunications (NET) Limited, and the establishment of the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) in 1985 to coordinate the provision of internal and external telecommunications services.

A major highlight of the visit was the display of rare historical artifacts preserved at the NCC Museum. Among the exhibits were a post office counter dating back to 1852, sorting racks introduced to Lagos in 1852, the Grand “T” key used at the Lagos Post Office in the nineteenth century, leather mailbags dating back to 1863, drop bag fittings from the late 20th century, a 511A letter scale from the mid-20th century, telegram machines, a Teleprinter T100, cordless PBX, digital card phones, and others.

Police begin enforcement of tinted vehicle ban

0

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has commenced enforcement of the ban on improperly used tinted-glass vehicles as part of efforts to tackle the activities of “one-chance” criminal syndicates operating across Abuja.

FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday.

Sanusi said security intelligence revealed that vehicles with tinted windows, concealed or covered number plates, and unregistered vehicles are frequently used in criminal operations within the capital city.

According to him, many criminal elements deliberately rely on such vehicles to hide their identities, evade security surveillance, and frustrate law enforcement efforts, posing a significant threat to public safety.

The police commissioner explained that following the intelligence reports, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan, directed the command to launch a comprehensive enforcement exercise targeting vehicles operating in violation of existing regulations.

He stressed that the operation is not aimed at harassing law-abiding residents who have obtained legitimate permits for tinted windows.

“The exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens who have legitimately acquired approval to use tints on their vehicles, but it is to deny criminals the cover they exploit to perpetrate crimes against innocent citizens and FCT residents,” he said.

Sanusi disclosed that more than 30 vehicles found with tinted glass, obscured number plates, or lacking proper registration documents have already been impounded.

He added that the owners and operators of the affected vehicles would be prosecuted in line with the Laws of the Federation and the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023.

“The owners and operators of these vehicles will be charged to court in accordance with the Laws of the Federation and the FCT Road Transport Regulations (2023),” he stated.

Real reason I didn’t celebrate goal against Nigeria – Poland star, Wiśniewski

0

Poland defender Przemysław Wiśniewski has explained why he opted for a muted celebration after scoring a dramatic late equaliser in his side’s 2-2 draw with Nigeria in an international friendly played in Warsaw on Wednesday night.

Wiśniewski struck from long range in the closing stages of the game, beating Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to level the score after Paul Onuachu had restored Nigeria’s lead from the penalty spot.

The goal marked the centre-back’s first for the Polish national team since making his debut against the Netherlands in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match in September 2025.

Speaking after the game, Wiśniewski said he had not planned any celebration because the goal came unexpectedly and he was already exhausted from the intensity of the match.

“I didn’t have a planned celebration because I don’t score often,” he told reporters through Przegladsportowy. “I just struck it, and it went in – pure instinct.”

The defender added that fatigue also played a major role in his subdued reaction after finding the net in the dying moments.

“I was fatigued in the 90th minute, so I wasn’t inclined to run around; I merely raised my hands. I’m pleased to have scored such a first goal,” he said.

The late strike ensured Poland avoided defeat and earned a share of the spoils in a closely contested encounter against the Super Eagles.

Leadership tussle: Ugochinyere releases Video showing Agbese signing Minority Leader endorsement form

0

A fresh twist has emerged in the controversy surrounding the leadership of the Minority Caucus in the Nigeria’s House of Representatives, as the lawmaker representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, released a video purportedly showing the House Deputy Spokesperson, Philip Agbese, signing his endorsement form for the position of Minority Leader.

The video, reportedly recorded on May 21, 2026, shows Agbese signing two separate documents said to be endorsement forms backing Ugochinyere’s bid for the minority leadership position in the Green Chamber.

The development comes barely a day after Agbese raised a point of personal privilege during plenary, alleging that his signature had been forged on a document nominating Ugochinyere as minority leader.

Earlier reports indicated that 61 members of the Minority Caucus appended their signatures to support Ugochinyere, a member of the Action People’s Party (APP), for the position.

Addressing lawmakers during Thursday’s plenary session, Agbese denied endorsing Ugochinyere and maintained that the publication of the nomination document bearing his signature violated his rights as a member of the caucus.

“Yesterday I saw a document on the internet with my name reportedly nominating a member of this House for the post of minority leader,” Agbese told the House.

However, Ugochinyere has now countered the forgery allegation by releasing the video, which he says captures the moment Agbese personally signed the endorsement forms.

The video has since sparked reactions as the dispute over the minority leadership position continues to generate debate within the House of Representatives.
