Poland defender Przemysław Wiśniewski has explained why he opted for a muted celebration after scoring a dramatic late equaliser in his side’s 2-2 draw with Nigeria in an international friendly played in Warsaw on Wednesday night.
Wiśniewski struck from long range in the closing stages of the game, beating Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to level the score after Paul Onuachu had restored Nigeria’s lead from the penalty spot.
The goal marked the centre-back’s first for the Polish national team since making his debut against the Netherlands in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match in September 2025.
Speaking after the game, Wiśniewski said he had not planned any celebration because the goal came unexpectedly and he was already exhausted from the intensity of the match.
“I didn’t have a planned celebration because I don’t score often,” he told reporters through Przegladsportowy. “I just struck it, and it went in – pure instinct.”
The defender added that fatigue also played a major role in his subdued reaction after finding the net in the dying moments.
“I was fatigued in the 90th minute, so I wasn’t inclined to run around; I merely raised my hands. I’m pleased to have scored such a first goal,” he said.
The late strike ensured Poland avoided defeat and earned a share of the spoils in a closely contested encounter against the Super Eagles.
