Protesting Nigerians on Thursday took to the streets of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), demanding the immediate rescue of schoolchildren and teachers abducted by gunmen in Oyo State.

The demonstrators, who marched in large numbers, expressed frustration over the worsening security situation, chanting slogans such as “Tinubu must go,” “Rescue them or resign,” and “Bring Nigerian children now.”

During the protest, participants also addressed police officers deployed to the area, insisting that peaceful demonstration is a constitutional right and urging security personnel to cooperate with them.

In a video circulating on social media, one of the protesters was heard confronting a motorist, saying: “Oga, Tinubu must go. You see what is happening today. You people are also part of it.

“Take this video. I’m going to post you. I don’t need any permission. You are a big man. Oga, go and tell people that you witnessed this thing.”

The protest followed the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State by armed assailants.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the country, with education stakeholders and civil society groups calling for urgent action to secure the release of the victims.

Earlier this week, members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) staged protests across several states, demanding the immediate rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers.

Meanwhile, Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, claimed he knows some of the politicians allegedly linked to the abduction and warned that he could reveal their identities if the situation persists.

‘Seyi Makinde knows, I’ll expose those politicians behind Oyo schoolchildren abduction’—Sunday Igboho

The leader of the Yoruba Nation movement and security advocate, Sunday Igboho, has alleged that some politicians are supporting the armed groups responsible for the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, warning that he could publicly identify those involved if the attacks persist.

Igboho made the claim on Wednesday during a meeting with the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), as concerns continue to mount over the fate of students and teachers abducted from schools in the area.

Gunmen had stormed schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026, kidnapping 39 pupils and seven teachers. One teacher was reportedly killed during the attack, which drew widespread condemnation and renewed fears over the safety of schools.

The incident also sparked protests by teachers’ unions and youth groups, who have called for urgent government intervention to secure the release of the victims and strengthen security around educational institutions.

During the meeting, Igboho said he has the capacity to help rescue the abducted victims but claimed that he has not received the required backing from the Oyo State Government.

“Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde knows I have the capacity to rescue the Oriire kidnapping victims, so why hasn’t he granted me permission?” he said.

He further stated that while the federal government approved his proposed Iru Ekun Security Network, the initiative was not endorsed by the state government.

Igboho also accused some political actors of financing and arming the kidnappers operating in the region.

“These terrorists are not aliens; they have the backup of some politicians. They are the ones giving them money and ammunition. And if the politicians behind them don’t stop, I am going to name all of them because I know them,” he said.

According to him, the alleged sponsors are pursuing political objectives.

“They are trying to do what they did to Jonathan to Tinubu,” he added.

The activist maintained that he is prepared to confront the kidnappers if given the opportunity.

“If I’m given the opportunity to face these bandits, I’ll flush them out,” he stated.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has condemned the abductions, describing them as barbaric, and assured that the Federal Government is committed to securing the release of the victims.

The president directed the deployment of a specialized rescue team to the affected area and approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to reinforce security operations in Oyo State.

A federal delegation comprising senior security officials was also sent to the area to support and coordinate rescue efforts.

Governor Seyi Makinde acknowledged the deployment of federal security personnel, noting that they are working with state authorities to secure the release of the abducted pupils and teachers.

Security sources disclosed that tactical and intelligence teams are continuing operations across forests and remote communities as efforts intensify to locate the victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

Security operatives have successfully rescued a woman and her four-month-old baby who were abducted during a bandit attack in Egbe, Yaba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The victims were kidnapped on Wednesday evening when suspected bandits invaded the Iqaluit Compound area of Elbe, specifically along the Solid Rock School axis, throwing residents into panic.

Their rescue was achieved through a coordinated operation involving local vigilantes and troops of the Nigerian Army, who launched a swift search mission following the incident.

The joint security operation eventually led to the safe recovery of both victims.

The development comes amid growing concerns over recurring attacks by criminal elements in parts of Koi State, with residents calling for stronger security measures to curb the menace.

2027: Tinubu will defeat Atiku, Peter Obi, Makinde- Jibrin

0

A four-term member of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will secure a second term in office in 2027, declaring that the opposition has already lost its opportunity to unseat the ruling party.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Wednesday, Jibrin said prevailing political realities and developments across the country favour Tinubu ahead of the next presidential election.

According to the lawmaker, the ruling party remains firmly positioned regardless of the opposition’s strategy or the candidates it presents for the contest.

Jibrin argued that even if prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, were to form a united front, Tinubu would still emerge victorious.

He further noted that the current divisions within the opposition camp have strengthened the President’s chances of re-election.

“I will say on a general note, on a general scale, and with the reality on ground and all of the political dynamics that we can see, no matter how you analyse it, whether with one presidential candidate you did not imagine, whether with another candidate from Ibadan emerging, however you look at it, the opposition lost it already,” Jibrin said.

“I used to say something, even if they come together, the President will defeat them. Not to talk about when they’ve split. The President will win this election, I tell you that.”

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Poland in an international friendly played on Wednesday night after conceding a late equaliser.

Head coach Eric Chelle used the encounter to assess new players, while Poland continued preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles opened the scoring in the first half through a well-crafted attacking move. Moses Simon burst into the penalty area before providing an assist for Terem Moffi, who finished neatly to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead.

Poland responded just before the break when a corner kick fell kindly to Kacper Potulski, who struck home to level the scores.

Nigeria regained the advantage in the second half after being awarded a penalty, with Paul Onuachu calmly converting from the spot to make it 2-1.

However, the hosts fought back once more, as Przemyslaw Wisniewski netted a stunning effort from outside the box late in the game, beating goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and ensuring the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

BREAKING: NNPCL, Other fuel Marketers reduces Petrol prices after Dangote Refinery’s rate cut

0

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and several other fuel marketers have reduced the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, following a recent price adjustment by the Dangote Refinery.

A market survey conducted in Abuja on Wednesday showed that NNPCL retail outlets lowered their petrol price to N1,335 per litre from N1,364 per litre, representing a reduction of N29.

Other major marketers also implemented price cuts. NIPCO reduced its pump price to N1,330 per litre from N1,350, while AA Rano adjusted its price to N1,350 per litre from N1,370, translating to a N20 reduction per litre for both marketers.

The latest adjustments come days after Dangote Refinery announced a N25 per litre reduction in its gantry price for petrol, a move that has begun to reflect across retail outlets nationwide.

Following the refinery’s price review, several filling stations had already started lowering their pump prices, with industry stakeholders predicting a wider market response as fresh supplies reach distributors.

Speaking on the development earlier, the President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) said more filling stations are expected to cut petrol prices once they begin lifting new stock from the 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote Refinery.

The latest reductions are expected to provide some relief to motorists and consumers amid ongoing efforts to stabilize fuel prices across the country.
