NBA, UNICEF unveil N120m legal aid plan for vulnerable children in Nigeria

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA and the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF have unveiled a N120 million strategic partnership to provide pro bono legal representation for vulnerable children across Nigeria, particularly those awaiting trial in correctional centres.

The initiative, unveiled in Abuja on Monday, is designed to mobilise lawyers nationwide to represent children who are victims of abuse, exploitation, trafficking and other violations, as well as those who come into conflict with the law.

Speaking at the event, NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, said the partnership marked a shift from broad commitments to child protection to a structured legal response capable of ensuring that vulnerable children have access to lawyers when they need them.

Osigwe said the absence of legal representation for children facing abuse, exploitation, neglect, trafficking, child marriage, harmful traditional practices or criminal proceedings amounted to a collective failure of society.

He challenged every NBA branch, law firm and legal practitioner to dedicate professional time and resources to child-related cases, insisting that pro bono representation should become an integral part of legal practice.

According to him, the partnership will mobilise lawyers to provide quality pro bono representation, strengthen referral pathways between justice and child-protection institutions, build lawyers’ capacity to handle child-sensitive cases and promote a justice system centred on the best interests of the child.

“This is not simply an act of charity. It is an act of justice,” Osigwe said, stressing that the true measure of the legal profession should include its ability to protect vulnerable people and strengthen public confidence in the rule of law.

Representing the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, the Director of the Criminal Justice and Reforms Department at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Leticia Ayoola-Daniels, said the Federal Government was strengthening the legal and institutional framework for child justice.

She said Nigeria had already established important foundations through the Child Rights Act 2003, the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, state Child Rights Laws, diversion initiatives and restorative justice mechanisms.

UNICEF Representative, Wafaa Saeed, said the partnership was founded on the principle that no child should be denied justice because of a lack of legal representation.

Saeed said children across Nigeria still encounter detention without legal representation, delays in case management, limited diversion opportunities, weak referral systems and inadequate support services.

The UNICEF representative called for increased investment in ensuring access to justice for vulnerable children across Nigeria.

BREAKING: WAFCON 2026: Cameroon eliminate Super Falcons

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals.

The two African giants faced off on Sunday evening in a keenly contested quarter-final encounter.

 

Cameroon took the lead in the 19th minute through a stunning free-kick from Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen.

 

The Super Falcons pushed forward in search of an equaliser but were unable to break down the Cameroonian defence.

 

Despite their efforts to level the score and force the game into extra time, Justine Madugu’s side failed to find the back of the net.

 

The defeat means Nigeria will not defend the WAFCON title they won against Morocco in the previous edition.

 

The Super Falcons will, however, face South Africa on Thursday in Casablanca, with a place in the Inter-Confederation Playoff Tournament at stake.

I’ll prioritise doctors’ welfare — NMA FCT chairman, Ebong speaks after inauguration

The newly elected chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, George Ebong, has vowed to prioritise the welfare of doctors in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

He disclosed this during his inaugural remarks as chairman of the NMA FCT on Saturday.

Ebong urged the Nigerian government to prioritise doctors’ welfare as a key solution to the japa syndrome.

He noted that the major motivation for doctors’ migration from Nigeria is the search for greener pastures.

According to him, prioritising doctors’ welfare in Nigeria would greatly help address the japa syndrome in the country’s health sector.

Ebong said the Nigerian government should see private hospitals as viable partners in tackling health challenges in the country.

“We must build a united front. We must speak with one voice on the dignity and welfare of Nigerian doctors.

“We are spotlighting doctors’ welfare. One of the reasons doctors migrate abroad is due to the search for greener pastures. We will ensure the government makes welfare better, so that doctors will have greener pastures here. We are going to engage the government. We won’t tolerate assaults on our members.

“The medical profession is affected, so definitely, what we are going to do is to make sure that we fight for the welfare of doctors.

“From day one, we are going to start doing that. And we are going to take it from hospital to hospital. And the government also needs to know that we have private hospitals that have done so much to bridge the gap where federal and state government hospitals cannot actually do that much.

“And so, the government needs to do so much to help these private hospitals meet their needs fully. I mean, they give back to the community, they run residency programmes, and they have equipment that even federal government hospitals don’t have.

“But then, they pay lots of taxes. It’s not even helping right now.

“So, the government should look into them and see how they can help them grow so that ordinary citizens can have affordable access to these hospitals as well. God bless Nigerian doctors,” he said.

Also speaking, the President of the National Body of the NMA, Prof. Afekhide Omoti, urged the new executives to ensure unity among members.

“FCT is the centre of NMA in Nigeria. I am happy with the crop of elected officials to run the affairs of FCT NMA for the next two years. Try your best to be a unifier. End all divisions in the Association,” he said.

On his part, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Labour, Dr Kamil Shoretire, in his remarks, said the Nigerian government’s doors are open to collaboration with doctors to improve the country’s healthcare sector.

Hunter Biden, son of former United States President Joe Biden, has revealed that his father’s prostate cancer has spread to his bones, describing the condition as “very painful” and “debilitating.”

Hunter made the disclosure in an emotional interview with the BBC published on Saturday, offering a fresh update on the former president’s health.

“I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good — the cancer has spread,” Hunter said.

He disclosed that the cancer had metastasised to Biden’s bones “and further,” saying the progression of the disease had become increasingly difficult for the family to watch.

“It’s very painful… very debilitating,” he said.

“Cancer is really hard. It’s really sad to watch.”

Despite his father’s worsening condition, Hunter described Biden as the centre of the family and praised him for his role as a father, husband and grandfather.

“My dad is, to this day, the centre of our family,” he said.

“He’s the best father, the best husband, the best grandfather.”

Biden announced in May 2025, four months after leaving the White House, that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

At the time, the former president said he was optimistic about his treatment and thanked supporters for their prayers and goodwill.

“I’m dealing with a cancer diagnosis, been getting treatment, and it’s going really well,” Biden said.

He also expressed confidence in his medical team and treatment plan, saying doctors believed the disease could be managed.

“The prognosis is good, we’re working on it,” he said.

Biden has largely stayed out of public life since disclosing his diagnosis, spending more time with his family while undergoing treatment.

His health had already been a major issue during the final months of his presidency and the 2024 presidential campaign, with concerns about his age and physical condition becoming a major subject of political debate.

In July 2024, Biden ended his re-election campaign and withdrew from the presidential race, after which then-Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic Party’s nominee. Harris subsequently lost the November 2024 election to Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Naira to Dollar exchange rate today, August 7, 2026: Naira extends three-day depreciation against dollar

The Nigerian Naira extended its depreciation against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Friday, ending the week on a negative note.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, showed that the Naira weakened to N1,365.69 per dollar on Friday, compared with N1,364.88 recorded on Thursday.

 

The latest figure represents a decline of N0.81 per dollar on a day-to-day basis.

 

At the parallel market, commonly known as the black market, the Naira remained stable at N1,430 per dollar on Friday, the same rate recorded on Thursday.

 

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s external reserves rose to $52.03 billion as of Thursday, August 6, 2026.

 

The development comes as the Naira recorded more losses than gains against the dollar during the week under review.

 

DAILY POST reports that the Naira depreciated by N2.53 and N5 against the dollar on a week-on-week basis at the official and parallel foreign exchange markets, respectively.

Afrobeats star Davido has responded to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo after the governor mocked his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, over his dancing at public events.

 

Hours after Okpebholo’s remarks went viral, Davido shared what appeared to be the governor’s WAEC result on his Instagram Story without a caption.

 

The document, which could not be independently verified, showed several low grades, including D7 and E8 in some subjects.

Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Bashir Ahmad, may come face-to-face in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The development follows a war of words between the duo on Thursday after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu held a telephone conversation with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is Davido’s uncle after ordering Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to unfreeze the state’s account.

Following the conversation, Davido took to his X handle to celebrate the development, saying he “was there live! I witnessed history.”

Reacting to the singer’s post, Ahmad, a former presidential media aide, said he had bookmarked it, apparently suggesting that Davido would return to X to lament the outcome of the governorship election.

Davido subsequently fired back, mocking Ahmad over his performance in the recent APC primary election, where he allegedly secured 16 votes.

The singer also accused the former presidential aide of failing to positively impact his community despite spending eight years in government.

In a follow-up post, Ahmad disclosed that he would arrive in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Tuesday, August 11, as part of the APC campaign activities.

“I will be in Osogbo from 11th, David,” Ahmad wrote.

The development has raised expectations of a possible face-off between the two, particularly as the governorship campaign enters its final days.

The Osun governorship election has gained momentum, with APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji and incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party intensifying their campaigns ahead of the August 15 poll.

With Ahmad set to join the APC campaign in Osogbo from Tuesday and Davido openly backing his uncle, the exchange between the two political actors and the singer could take a new turn in the final days before the election.

Biafra: ‘Nigerian govt responsible, wrong person has been imprisoned’ – Simon Ekpa appeals jail term in Finland

Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), Simon Ekpa, has expressed confidence that his six-year prison sentence by a Finnish court will be overturned.

Nigerian Newssphere recalls that Ekpa was sentenced to six years in prison by a Finnish district court on September 1, 2025, after he was convicted of terrorism-related offences linked to killings in the Southeast region of Nigeria.

However, speaking with some Biafra agitators during proceedings for his appeal hearing on Thursday, Ekpa maintained that he was the wrong person being imprisoned.

He said the Nigerian government was responsible for the violence in the Southeast and expressed confidence that the truth would eventually emerge.

He said, “I’m very confident that the truth is going to come out. They will know that the wrong person has been imprisoned.

“The Nigerian government is responsible for the killing of our people and they should be held responsible for that. I am here because of the life of my people.”

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Biafrans were jubilant upon seeing Ekpa appear in court for his appeal hearing after a long period in a Finnish prison.

Recall that Ekpa, a Biafra advocate and activist, has been at the forefront of calls for Biafra’s independence from Nigeria, citing the continued marginalisation of the Igbo people. His calls have been criticised by the Nigerian government.

Prior to Ekpa’s arrest and subsequent conviction by the Finnish authorities, Finland had engaged in several diplomatic discussions with the Nigerian government.

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that he was present when President Bola Tinubu spoke with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke over the freezing of the state’s bank accounts.

 

DAILY POST had earlier reported that Tinubu placed a telephone call to Governor Adeleke, who is also the Accord Party’s candidate in the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.

 

During the conversation, the President informed the governor that he had directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to immediately reverse its decision to freeze the Osun State Government’s accounts.

 

Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed details of the phone call in a post on his official X handle on Thursday.

 

Reacting by reposting Onanuga’s update, Davido wrote: “I was there live! I witnessed history.”

 

Davido, who is Governor Adeleke’s nephew, did not provide further details about the meeting but confirmed that he personally witnessed the conversation.

 

The singer’s reaction comes days after he declared that no one could defeat him in a free and fair election in Nigeria if he decided to contest for political office.
