The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) has announced the commencement of payment of February 2026 salaries to federal government treasury-funded employees.

In a statement issued to Nigerian Newssphere on Monday, the Director of Press at the OAGF, Bawa Mokwa, confirmed that the salary disbursement began on Monday, March 2, 2026.

The office attributed the delay in paying the February salaries to a technical glitch, noting that the issue has now been resolved. It added that measures have been put in place to ensure such delays do not occur again.

The OAGF also disclosed that it has secured approval and completed the payment process for one month’s wage award arrears out of the three months currently outstanding.

The development follows concerns and complaints from Nigerian workers over the delay in the payment of their February salaries.

Protests erupt in Lagos over killing of Iranian leader Khameini in US-Israeli strike

0

The southwest leadership of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) on Monday staged a protest in Lagos State over the reported killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in strikes  carried out by the United States and Israel.

The protesters gathered in the early hours around the Maryland area of Lagos, chanting slogans and condemning what they described as continued foreign aggression against Iran. They called for global condemnation of American involvement in the affairs of sovereign nations.

The demonstration reportedly created tension in the area, with residents expressing concern over possible unrest.

Speaking to Leadership Newspaper, the South-West Coordinator of IMN, Muftau Zakariya, said the protest was aimed at voicing opposition to what he termed persistent invasions of independent nations under the administration of Donald Trump.

Zakariya referenced alleged interventions in Venezuela, including claims of interference in the country’s leadership and energy infrastructure. He also linked rising tensions in Kwara State to what he described as US involvement in the region.

“I told you that nothing good comes from US intervention. Their interest lies mainly in economic gains without regard for the consequences,” he said.

Earlier reports indicated that similar protests had erupted in Niger Northern Nigeria following news of Khamenei’s death.

Iran confirms strike on Netanyahu amid alleged death rumor of Israel’s PM

0

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for a strike on the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to Tukiye Today.

The IRGC said the attack also targeted a separate location where the commander of the Israeli Air Force was reportedly present at the time.

Despite the claim, there has been no official confirmation regarding Netanyahu’s condition, amid circulating rumors suggesting he may have been killed in the strike. Israeli authorities have yet to issue a statement addressing the speculation.

In a statement, the IRGC said the operation formed part of the “10th wave” of attacks and involved the use of Kheybar Shekan ballistic missiles.

“The office of the criminal Israeli PM, Netanyahu, and the location of the regime’s Air Force commander were struck in targeted and surprise attacks by Kheybar Shekan ballistic missiles during the 10th wave,” the IRGC said, adding that further details would be released in the coming hours.

In a separate development, Israel’s military announced it had killed two senior Iranian intelligence officials inside Iran. However, it did not comment on the reported strike on Netanyahu’s office.

The Israeli military identified the officials as Sayed Yahya Hamidi and Jalal Pour Hussein, described as the head of the espionage division at Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence.

According to the military, the two men were “senior terrorists,” and other high-ranking figures were also neutralized during the operation.

Recall that President Donald Trump of the United States confirmed that 48 Iranian leaders, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, were killed in a US-Israel strike at the weekend.

Former Nigerian captain, Troost-Ekong stranded in Qatar amid Iran, US-Israel war

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reportedly been stranded in Qatar due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, Soccernet reports.

The 32-year-old defender recently completed a move to Al Ahli SC after departing Saudi Arabia in January. However, the current security situation in the region has prevented him from leaving Qatar.

Football activities and commercial flights have been suspended as a result of rising military tensions involving Iran and Israel in the Gulf region.

Iran reportedly launched strikes on strategic locations in response to what it described as attacks by the United States and Israel. Meanwhile, Qatar’s Ministry of Defence stated that its air defense systems successfully intercepted missiles directed at the country as part of precautionary security measures.

Following the temporary closure of airspace by Qatar and neighboring states, several foreigners, travelers, and professional athletes—including Troost-Ekong—remain unable to depart the country.

EU: GROW Project launch to boost green job creation in Nigeria, Mozambique

0

The GROW Project—Construction Waste Remediation and Recycling Vocational Training in Sub-Saharan Africa—has officially been launched, bringing together European and African partners to address construction waste challenges while promoting green job creation in Nigeria and Mozambique.

GROW PROJECT

Co-funded by the European Commission under the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Vocational Education and Training in Sub-Saharan Africa program, the GROW Project aims to strengthen vocational education systems by equipping young people, construction workers, and educators with green, digital, and entrepreneurial skills for sustainable construction waste management and recycling.

The construction sector is one of the largest generators of waste globally, accounting for up to 30 percent of total solid waste. In many Sub-Saharan African countries, most construction and demolition waste ends up in dumpsites, despite its strong potential for reuse and recycling. GROW seeks to turn this challenge into an opportunity by integrating circular economy principles into vocational training and linking skills development with labor market needs.

Through the project, vocational training institutions in Nigeria and Mozambique will modernize curricula, train instructors and managers, and pilot innovative training programs focused on construction waste reduction, recycling, and sustainable building practices. The project also promotes work-based learning, internships, job fairs, and entrepreneurship to improve employment and self-employment opportunities for young people.

Gender equality and social inclusion are central to GROW’s approach, with a commitment to ensure that at least 30 percent of beneficiaries are women. By encouraging women’s participation in green construction careers, the project aims to foster more inclusive and resilient local economies.

Speaking on the project, the Apodissi General Manager, Margherita Trestini, added, ” The GROW Project provides a unique opportunity to modernize training systems and introduce innovative approaches to Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) recycling and sustainable building practices. At APODISSI, we are particularly focused on promoting entrepreneurship, inclusion, and employment opportunities, especially for young people and women. By building local capacity and strengthening partnerships between education and industry, this project will contribute significantly to environmental sustainability and economic resilience in Nigeria and Mozambique.”

Trestini further said that APODISSI, with its operational headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria, has extensive knowledge of the CDW ecosystem in Lagos and Windhoek.

“Through the GROW Project, we have a valuable opportunity to expand our engagement into Mozambique, better understand the local market, and establish strong networks within the CDW sector. This collaboration will enable APODISSI to contribute its expertise while building strategic partnerships that support long-term innovation, skills development, and sustainable CDW management solutions in the region,” she added.

GROW is implemented by a consortium of partners from Europe—Mínimos Quadrados (MQ); AREA; MUNDUS; and Africa—Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA); APODISSI; UniZambeze; Instituto Superior Dom Bosco (ISDB), including vocational training institutions, public authorities, universities, and private sector stakeholders. The project aligns with EU Global Gateway priorities, national development strategies in Nigeria and Mozambique, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

By strengthening skills, promoting innovation, and fostering cross-border collaboration, the GROW Project is expected to contribute to cleaner cities, reduced environmental impact, and sustainable job creation across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Iran, US–Israel war: Oil prices climb as tensions escalate in Middle East

0

Global crude oil prices continued their upward trajectory on Monday as hostilities between Iran, the United States, and Israel entered a fourth day, heightening concerns over energy supply disruptions.

The surge follows coordinated military strikes by the US and Israel on Iran on Friday night, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of 48 senior Iranian figures, including the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has since launched retaliatory attacks targeting key US allies across the Middle East, triggering a wave of explosions and instability across the region.

The escalating conflict has disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor under Iranian control that handles about 20 percent of global crude supply. Several oil firms have reportedly suspended cargo movements through the channel amid security concerns.

Market data reviewed on Monday showed that Brent crude rose to $78.50 per barrel, up from $72.87 recorded on Saturday, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbed to $71.84 per barrel from $67.02 over the same period.

Reacting to the development, the Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), Dr. Muda Yusuf, said the crisis presents mixed implications for Nigeria’s economy.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Yusuf described the situation as a “double-edged shock” for Africa’s largest economy.

“While elevated oil prices could bolster Nigeria’s fiscal revenues and external reserves in the short term, the broader impact may be adverse,” he said. “Rising inflationary pressures, declining consumer welfare, capital flow volatility, and risks to global growth could significantly offset the gains.”

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he would secure overwhelming support from Nigerians if he decides to contest the presidency.

Speaking on Monday during a media chat with selected journalists, Wike expressed strong confidence in his popularity across the country, insisting that Nigerians still hold him in high regard.

According to him, should he enter the presidential race, he is certain of receiving massive votes nationwide.

The former Rivers State governor said his ability to relate with everyday Nigerians sets him apart, adding that his track record in office continues to speak for him. He cited his tenure as governor and his current role as FCT minister as evidence of his capacity to deliver results.

Wike also maintained that his political structure remains formidable in the nation’s capital, stating that even if the recently concluded area council elections in Abuja were to be conducted again, candidates loyal to him would emerge victorious.

“Nigerians still love me, and if I run for the presidential election, they will vote for me massively”.

Iran: How Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, others made costly bargain for backing US, Israel—Adamu Garba

0

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adamu Garba, has alleged that several Gulf nations are facing severe repercussions after supporting the United States and Israel in their military offensive against Iran.

In a post shared on X on Monday, Garba claimed that Iranian drone strikes had ignited fires at Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura oil refinery and port facilities, while also destroying desalination plants in the United Arab Emirates.

According to him, the region has descended into turmoil, with critical infrastructure reportedly targeted.

“The entire gulf is on fire; however, the US is focusing on protecting Israel against Hezbollah,” he wrote.

Garba further asserted that Gulf States, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, had entered into what he described as a “costly bargain” by aligning themselves with Washington and Tel Aviv.

His comments come amid escalating tensions following reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed on Saturday after coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets.

Iranian media also reported that members of Khamenei’s family, including his daughter, grandchild, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law, were among those killed in the attack.
