Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has responded to criticism over her advice encouraging unemployed Nigerian women to consider selling bean cakes, popularly known as akara, as a means of earning a living.
The remarks, contained in a viral video, sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerian youths criticizing the First Lady and accusing her of being insensitive to the country’s economic challenges.
Addressing the controversy during a visit to Jigawa State on Monday, Remi Tinubu said she and her office remain unfazed by the criticism, insisting that those who benefit from the initiative value the support being provided.
She explained that the programme is not limited to akara vendors but also extends assistance to other small-scale traders, including tomato, maize and vegetable sellers.
She said, “I heard people talking about akara sellers. It is not only akara sellers. We are also supporting tomato sellers, maize sellers, vegetable sellers, and many other petty traders.
“I know the beneficiaries appreciate it, and we’re not intimidated by the wrong reports, we will continue to make sure that we care for our people”.
