Lionel Messi scores 900th career goal

0

Inter Miami captain and Argentine Lionel Messi has reached the 900-goal milestone in his professional career.

The Argentine World Cup winner achieved the feat after scoring in Inter Miami’s 1-1 draw with Nashville SC in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup clash on Wednesday.

Messi becomes only the second male footballer in history to reach 900 career goals, joining longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 36-year-old opened the scoring within the first 10 minutes, cutting onto his left foot before firing a precise shot across the goal to hand Miami the lead. However, Cristian Espinoza equalized for Nashville, a result that saw Inter Miami eliminated from the competition.

Messi reached the milestone in 1,142 matches, fewer than Ronaldo, who required 1,236 games. Brazilian legend Pelé remains third on the all-time scoring chart with 765 goals.

A breakdown of Messi’s 900 goals shows 672 scored for FC Barcelona, 32 for Paris Saint-Germain, 81 for Inter Miami, and 115 for the Argentina national team.

Tinubu’s UK visit: ‘Naija no dey carry ‘last’—King Charles uses three Nigerian languages in speech.

0

King Charles III on Wednesday celebrated Nigeria’s rapid transformation, weaving Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba proverbs into his remarks while also referencing the country’s famous Jollof rice.

The British monarch, alongside his wife, Queen Camilla, hosted Bola Tinubu and Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, during a state visit reception at Windsor Castle on Thursday.

Speaking at the event, King Charles said Nigeria is evolving at an impressive pace, declaring, “Nigeria hasn’t merely changed. It has arrived.”

He highlighted the impact of Nigerians living in the United Kingdom, noting that many of them are excelling across sectors, including business, technology, academia, law, science, sports, literature, the arts, and public service.

“Only last week, I was delighted to host a rather lively group of them for a ‘Jollof and Tea’ party at St. James’s Palace. I was firmly assured that the Jollof was only the best: Nigerian, of course… or perhaps Ghanaian or Senegalese. Diplomatically, I cannot remember!” he said.

The monarch added that Nigerian culture has significantly enriched British society, pointing to the global popularity of Afrobeats, Nollywood films, and Nigerian talents in the Premier League and judiciary.

“Whether they are Nigerians who have chosen Britain as their adopted place to invest, trade, or study, or Britons who cherish their personal connection to Nigeria, they all represent a living bridge of over half a million people who connect our nations,” he said.

King Charles described the UK-Nigeria relationship as a mutually beneficial partnership of equals and praised Nigeria as “an economic powerhouse, a cultural force, and an influential diplomatic voice” on the global stage.

Quoting Yoruba wisdom, he said, “rain does not fall on one roof alone,” while also referencing a Hausa proverb: “when the music changes, so does the dance.”

Encouraging continued collaboration, he added, “My wife and I will gain strength from seeing Nigeria take her rightful place at the heart of the Commonwealth…” As the Igbo say, “Knowledge is never complete; two heads are better than one.”

He concluded his speech with a toast: “To the President and people of Nigeria—Naija No Dey Carry Last!”

2027: ‘I’m not certain of the ADC presidential ticket’—Peter Obi reveals

0

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed uncertainty over securing the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking in a video address to his supporters, Obi acknowledged that clinching the party’s ticket is not guaranteed but stressed his commitment to the broader political cause.

“Someone asked me how I am sure the ADC will give me the presidential ticket. I cannot be certain. What matters is that we are committed to a cause. I keep asking myself how we got here and what would happen if we walked away from this project,” he said.

Despite the uncertainty, Obi reaffirmed his resolve to pursue his presidential ambition, noting that he remains undeterred by alleged threats.

“I am not certain of the ADC presidential ticket, but I am fighting for it, and I am not afraid to campaign anywhere in Nigeria,” he added.

The former candidate of the Labour Party also commended his supporters for their resilience, highlighting the difficulties of operating within Nigeria’s opposition space.

He expressed gratitude to loyal followers who have continued to stand by him despite the lack of immediate rewards.

“I thank you for your sacrifice. It is not easy to be in the opposition in Nigeria, and for those who continue to support even when there is no return, I am grateful,” Obi said.

However, he admitted lingering concerns about the future, particularly regarding political alliances and loyalty among stakeholders.

“How can we be sure that those we are working with today will not abandon us tomorrow? I wish we could be certain, but we cannot,” he stated.

Tiktoker Peller finally reacts to Oba of Benin’s ban

0

Popular Nigerian TikTok creator and streamer Hamzat Habeeb Adelaja, widely known as Peller, has responded to the controversies trailing his alleged unauthorized visit to the palace of Oba Ewuare II and a N395 million lawsuit filed against him.

Speaking during a recent livestream, the content creator maintained his innocence, insisting he was not directly responsible for the incidents.

The first controversy relates to his visit to the Benin Palace on March 6, 2026, which the Benin Traditional Council described as a breach of palace protocol and a desecration of sacred grounds.

According to the council, Peller and his team allegedly gained entry into the palace without proper authorization.

The development reportedly led to disciplinary measures, including the suspension of a chief, the arrest and prosecution of a palace staff member, and possible sanctions against a queen who featured in related content.

The council has since summoned Peller to appear before its committee and submit a written apology, warning that legal action may follow if he fails to comply.

Reacting to the allegations, Peller said he acted on instructions from his manager and was unaware that his visit violated any rules.

“My manager asked me to go to the Oba of Benin’s palace. I didn’t know about any protocols. I greeted everyone respectfully. My hands are clean,” he said.

The second controversy involves a N395 million lawsuit filed by Lagos resident Osarobo Odigie over an alleged incident at a lounge in Lekki.

In a pre-action notice issued through her lawyers, Odigie accused Peller of defamation, cyber harassment, invasion of privacy, and emotional distress after he allegedly recorded and shared a video of a confrontation without her consent.

She is seeking N200 million in damages for defamation, N100 million for emotional trauma, N75 million for cyberbullying, and N20 million to cover legal costs.

Responding to the suit, Peller admitted he lacks the financial means to meet the demands and appealed for leniency, noting that he had previously apologized.

“I don’t have that kind of money. It feels like people want me to go broke. I’m begging; I’m just a young person who needs guidance,” he said.

Vacant immediately—Iran vows to bomb major oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar

0

Iran has warned it could launch strikes on key energy infrastructure across the Gulf region following attacks on its largest gas field, marking the first direct hit on its fossil fuel sector since the conflict began.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued the threat after Iranian state media reported missile strikes on facilities at the South Pars gas field—the world’s largest natural gas reserve, jointly shared with Qatar.

Israel media reports suggested the operation was carried out by Israel with backing from the United States, signaling a sharp escalation in the conflict. Until now, both countries had largely avoided targeting Iran’s oil and gas infrastructure, a restraint that helped limit volatility in global energy markets.

The latest development has heightened fears of wider disruption. By Wednesday afternoon, global oil prices had climbed toward $110 per barrel amid concerns over supply risks and the continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian authorities identified several potential targets for retaliation, including major energy installations in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. These reportedly include the Samref refinery and Jubail petrochemical complex in Saudi Arabia, the Al-Hosn gasfield in the UAE, and Qatar’s Mesaieed and Ras Laffan energy facilities.

A statement carried by state media warned that the sites had become “legitimate targets” and urged civilians and workers to evacuate immediately for safety.

Eskandar Pasalar, governor of Asaluyeh in southern Iran, described the reported US-Israeli action as “political suicide,” saying the conflict had shifted toward what he called a “full-scale economic war.”

Reacting to the developments, Qatari government spokesperson Majid Al-Ansari cautioned that any attack on energy infrastructure would pose serious risks to global energy security, regional populations, and the environment.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the Nigerian government had earlier declared Thursday and Friday as public holidays to mark the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration.

Gov Soludo dismisses all appointees

0

Less than 24 hours after being sworn in for a second term, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has ordered all political appointees to immediately hand over their responsibilities.

The directive was contained in an official circular dated March 18, 2026, issued by the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG). The notice instructed affected appointees to transfer their duties to permanent secretaries or, where unavailable, the most senior civil servant in their respective ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).

According to the memo, the handover process must be completed before the close of work on the same day, pending the formation of a new cabinet.

“I am directed to inform all political appointees to hand over to the Permanent Secretaries or the most senior civil servant in the various MDAs on or before the close of work today… until a new cabinet is constituted,” the statement read.

The government also directed all members of the outgoing cabinet to meet with the governor on Monday, March 23, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the ANSEC Chambers.

The circular was signed by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Nwabufor Nwankwo.

The move effectively dissolves the current cabinet and signals the start of a new administrative phase as Governor Soludo prepares to appoint a fresh executive team for his second term.

Blackout: Adelabu to exit Tinubu’s Govt without achieving 6000MW electricity supply target

0

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is expected to resign from the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of a March 31 deadline for political appointees seeking elective office in 2027.

The directive, issued by Tinubu, requires all ministers, aides, and appointees with political ambitions to step down in line with provisions of the Electoral Act. Adelabu, who has declared his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship election, is among those affected.

A source within the Ministry of Power confirmed that the minister is preparing to leave office before the deadline. “He is ready to bow out; I can authoritatively tell you this. His immediate goal is the Oyo Governorship 2027,” the source said.

Efforts to get an official response from Adelabu’s spokesperson, Bolaji Tunji, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages were not returned as of the time of filing this report.

Adelabu’s impending exit means he will leave office without meeting his self-imposed target of increasing Nigeria’s electricity supply to 6,000 megawatts. Current generation figures remain significantly below that goal, with about 3,331 MW distributed to electricity distribution companies as of Tuesday.

Nigeria’s power sector has continued to struggle with persistent challenges, including gas shortages and mounting debts. In recent weeks, generation companies shut down several gas-fired plants over unresolved legacy debts estimated at over N6.8 trillion, worsening blackouts nationwide.

Despite earlier projections to achieve the 6,000 MW target by 2025, the goal has remained unmet, underscoring the deep-rooted issues in the country’s electricity sector.

Saudi Arabia declares Eid-ul-Fitr

Saudi Arabian authorities have declared that Eid al-Fitr will be observed on Friday, March 20, 2026, following the non-sighting of the crescent moon that signals the start of Shawwal.

The update was shared by Haramain Sharifain Info in a post that read:

“BREAKING NEWS: The crescent moon has NOT been sighted in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, Eid Al-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, 20th March 2026.

“May Allāh allow us to utilize the remaining moments of this blessed month to engage in that which pleases Him, may He accept our siyām, qiyām & a’māl, and may He allow us to witness many more Ramadāns in good health. Āmīn.”

In Nigeria, Muslims are still awaiting an official declaration from the Sultanate Council, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, who traditionally confirms the end of Ramadan in the country.

Earlier, Nigerian Government declared Thursday and Friday as public holidays to mark Eid-ul-Fitr celebration.
