Terrorists, bandits use ‘repentance’ to evade justice—ex-presidential aide, Ahmed

0

Bashir Ahmed, a former media aide to Muhammadu Buhari, has raised fresh concerns over the policy of granting pardons to repentant bandits in Nigeria following a deadly attack in Katsina State.

Ahmed’s reaction comes after the reported killing of 15 members of a vigilante group by suspected repentant bandits in the state.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, when vigilantes on patrol intercepted and killed three suspected repentant bandits in Falale village, located in Jibia Local Government Area.

In what authorities described as a retaliatory attack, armed bandits later stormed the community, killing 15 people.

Reacting via a post on X, Ahmed argued that some bandits exploit amnesty programs to escape justice rather than genuinely renounce violence.

“I just read a disturbing report that repentant bandits killed 18 members of a vigilante group during an encounter in the Jibia Local Government of Katsina. This reinforces the genuine concern that many who claim repentance do so only as an opportunity to evade justice,” he wrote.

Several states in Nigeria’s Northwest, including Katsina, have previously adopted peace deals and pardons for repentant bandits as part of efforts to curb persistent insecurity in the region.

How we eliminated Iran Intelligence Minister Khatib—Israel

0

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has explained how it killed Iran’s Intelligence Minister, Esmail Khatib.

The IDF said the Iranian leader was killed in a targeted overnight strike in Tehran, as the escalating conflict in the Middle East entered its 19th day on Wednesday.

In a statement posted on X, the IDF said Khatib was eliminated during a precision operation, describing him as a key figure in Iran’s intelligence and security apparatus.

“Esmail Khatib, the Iranian terrorist regime’s minister of intelligence, was eliminated in a targeted strike in Tehran,” the IDF said.

The Israeli military accused Khatib of playing a major role in suppressing recent protests in Iran, including actions during the Mahsa Amini protests, and of overseeing operations against Israeli and American interests globally.

It added that Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence maintains extensive capabilities in surveillance, espionage, and covert operations both domestically and internationally.

The reported killing comes a day after Israel said it had also eliminated senior Iranian official Ali Larijani. However, the Iranian government has yet to officially confirm or comment on Khatib’s alleged death.

Meanwhile, Israel has intensified its offensive against Hezbollah, launching fresh airstrikes on Lebanon’s capital, Beirut. One explosion reportedly destroyed a building in the city center, an area known for commercial activity rather than Hezbollah strongholds in southern Beirut.

In response, Iran and allied militia groups have carried out retaliatory strikes across the region. In Israel, at least two people were reported killed in Tel Aviv, while explosions and drone interceptions were recorded in multiple countries, including Dubai, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia.

Earlier, the United States military said it deployed bunker-busting “deep penetrator” bombs targeting Iranian missile facilities along the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial global oil transit route that has reportedly been disrupted since the conflict began on February 28.

The ongoing hostilities have significantly heightened regional tensions, with reports indicating that more than 49 senior Iranian figures have been killed since the start of the war.

Nigerian military gun down 61 ISWAP, Boko Haram terrorists in Borno

0

In a gallant move, Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force, have neutralized no fewer than 61 terrorists suspected to be members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The development was disclosed by security analyst Zagazola Makama in a report shared on X on Monday.

According to him, the operation took place in Malam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, when insurgents attempted to infiltrate the area in the early hours of Wednesday.

Makama stated that the attackers advanced on foot and deployed armed drones in an effort to breach the defenses of troops stationed at the 68 Battalion. However, they were met with stiff resistance from Nigerian forces.

Quoting military sources, he noted that coordinated air and ground operations played a critical role in repelling the assault, as troops were able to effectively track, engage, and eliminate a large number of the insurgents.

The latest development comes amid renewed concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the state, where several lives have recently been lost in attacks by armed groups.

Fuel price hike in Nigeria not linked to Tinubu—Nollywood actress Surutu

0

Veteran Nollywood actress Remi Surutu has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu amid growing concerns over the rising cost of fuel in Nigeria.

Surutu made the remarks during the launch of EKO57, a political support group established to mobilize backing for Tinubu’s second-term ambition.

Addressing criticism surrounding the surge in petrol prices, the actress dismissed claims that the president is responsible, arguing that fuel pricing is largely influenced by global forces.

She said, “I had an argument with someone who insisted that Asiwaju caused the fuel hike. I told them he is not responsible.

“Fuel prices are influenced by global decisions, and the increase has nothing to do with Tinubu.”

Surutu reiterated her confidence in the president’s leadership and urged Nigerians to actively participate in the democratic process without fear or intimidation.

She also commended Tinubu’s family, describing them as “extremely good people,” while expressing concern over what she described as a lack of unity among the Yoruba.

“The wife, the husband, and the children are all very good people. But as Yorubas, we often fail to support one another. If we take a broader look at global developments, we will realize that we are still doing relatively well,” she added.

Naira appreciates massively against US dollar ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr break

0

The Naira continued its upward momentum against the US Dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Tuesday, posting another strong gain ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

According to data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria, the local currency appreciated to N1,344.42 per dollar on Tuesday, improving from N1,357.77 recorded on Monday.

This represents a day-on-day gain of N13.35, surpassing the N8.46 appreciation achieved in the previous trading session and extending the Naira’s recent rally.

However, activity in the parallel market showed no movement, with the Naira holding steady at N1,430 per dollar, the same rate recorded last Friday.

The appreciation comes despite a slight decline in Nigeria’s foreign reserves, which dropped to $49.87 billion as of March 16, 2026, from $50.01 billion reported on March 12, based on figures from the apex bank.

Trading at the currency market is expected to wrap up on Wednesday for the week, as markets prepare to close for the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays on Thursday and Friday.

Wale Adenuga explains why actor was barred from using Papa Ajasco trademark

0

Veteran Nigerian filmmaker and producer Wale Adenuga has clarified the controversy surrounding the iconic comedy Papa Ajasco and Company, stating that restrictions placed on actor Abiodun Ayoyinka are strictly for brand protection.

In a statement issued by the chairman of Wale Adenuga Productions, Adenuga dismissed allegations of exploitation and financial neglect as “entirely false and misleading.”

The response follows claims by Ayoyinka—popularly known for portraying Papa Ajasco—that ownership of the character’s trademark has limited his opportunities beyond the long-running comedy series.

Reacting to a viral video featuring the actor, Adenuga expressed surprise, saying, “My first impression when I watched the Papa Ajasco video now trending on the internet and local TV channels was, ‘Okay, so this guy has taken Papa Ajasco comedy into the public space!’”

He added, “It is all well and good. I am happy for him, as his money-making strategy using social media has apparently worked for him.”

While acknowledging the actor’s talent and contributions, Adenuga stressed that the “Papa Ajasco” brand remains legally protected.

“He cannot use the copyrighted brand name Papa Ajasco for personal ventures because it is our duty to protect the brand from inappropriate usage that could damage its reputation,” he said.

Adenuga also clarified that the actor is free to pursue other engagements, noting, “He has not been barred from accepting advert jobs… all that is required is to seek official approval from WAP. This is part of brand protection.”

Providing further context, Adenuga revealed that Ayoyinka is a retired civil servant who served over three decades with the Lagos State Government, adding that he has benefited from several incentives over the years.

“On the car issue, we once gave him a car—and Pa James as well. He has also used not less than five cars, including a Mercedes-Benz, at different times,” Adenuga stated.

Questioning the actor’s claims of financial hardship, he asked, “Why is Abiodun Ayoyinka claiming to be broke? Where are the investments from his over 30 years of meritorious service… What happened to his gratuities?”

He further noted that other cast members, including Pa James, continue to take on independent roles outside the show.

Explaining the production schedule, Adenuga said, “Abiodun Ayoyinka and other artists in the TV show are on our set for six weeks in a whole year, thereby availing them enough time to pursue other endeavors.”

He added, “Within that period, we record enough episodes to last for a year.”

Reaffirming the company’s standing, Adenuga stated, “Wale Adenuga Productions has remained reputable over the years. The organization pays according to industry standards and ensures all financial obligations are fulfilled as and when due.”

He concluded by reiterating that “any narrative suggesting financial abandonment or exploitation by our organization is entirely false and misleading.”

2026 World Cup: NFF takes next step after FIFA’s ruling on DR Congo

0

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has announced the next line of action after FIFA has rejected their petition against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

NFF said it would immediately appeal FIFA’s decision.

This was confirmed by the NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, on Tuesday.

Sanusi, however, insisted they were not satisfied with the verdict and will begin the process of appealing it.

He said, “We have received the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on our petition, but we are not satisfied with the decision, which rejected our petition.

“I want to assure Nigerians that the NFF has immediately commenced the process of appealing the decision.”

The Super Eagles lost the African play-off final to DR Congo 4-3 on penalties.

However, after the match, the NFF protested the eligibility of some players in the Congolese squad, citing perceived fraud in the issuance of passports to those involved.

DR Congo have been drawn to face the winner of the clash between Jamaica and New Caledonia in the 2026 World Cup intercontinental play-off later this month.

Maiduguri bombings: Tinubu’s govt killing Nigerians, he’s failure—Amaechi

0

Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of failing to protect Nigerians and their property, following a deadly bombing in Maiduguri.

In a statement released on Tuesday through his media office, Amaechi condemned the Monday night attack, describing the Tinubu-led government as “abysmally incompetent” and lacking the leadership required to ensure citizens’ safety.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain extended condolences to the victims’ families, lamenting that Nigerians continue to suffer losses while those in power “live lavishly and ostentatiously” without taking decisive action to curb insecurity.

“This government is killing Nigerians. I reiterate, President Tinubu’s government is killing Nigerians, literally destroying lives. He has failed in the most fundamental responsibility of safeguarding the lives of the citizens of this country,” Amaechi said.

He described the Maiduguri bombing as more than a tragic incident, calling it “a severe indictment of a leadership that has become complacent, incompetent, and indifferent to the suffering and deaths of Nigerians.”

Amaechi further accused the government of ignoring the worsening security situation across the country, noting that citizens are left to grieve while authorities offer “insincere statements and empty promises.”

“While families grieve and communities live in fear, those in power issue insincere statements and make empty promises. They simply move on as if nothing has occurred. Tinubu would prefer to dine and celebrate in London while Nigeria suffers. They simply do not care,” he added.

Questioning the government’s response to insecurity, Amaechi asked how many more lives must be lost before meaningful action is taken, stressing that insecurity has become a daily reality for ordinary Nigerians.

He maintained that citizens deserve safety, peace, and dignity, not “negligence and ongoing excuses,” warning that leaders who cannot guarantee security have no business remaining in power.

Amaechi also sympathized with residents of Borno State and families of the victims, describing their losses as devastating and blaming the government’s failure to protect them.

Declaring that “enough is enough,” he urged President Tinubu to step down over what he described as the administration’s inability to secure the nation.

Probe NBA President Osigwe—Lawyers Tell CJN

0

A group of lawyers under the Nigerian Law Society (NLS) has called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to refer the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, SAN, to the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) for allegedly reprimanding a judge in public.

The LPPC, responsible for conferring the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and maintaining professional standards among senior lawyers, was urged to investigate the NBA President’s conduct and determine appropriate sanctions if necessary.

The NLS’ demand follows an incident at the Federal High Court on Monday, where Mohammed Umar ordered defense counsel Marshall Abubakar, representing politician and publisher Omoyele Sowore, to kneel in open court for raising his voice during proceedings.

Justice Umar also threatened to commit the lawyer to prison for contempt before other counsel intervened and pleaded for leniency, prompting him to withdraw the directive.

Reacting to the development, Osigwe, in a statement on behalf of the NBA, condemned the judge’s action.

“A judge directing a legal practitioner or indeed any person whatsoever to kneel in court is not a recognized judicial sanction under our laws and does not align with the standards of judicial conduct expected on the bench,” he said.

However, the NLS described the NBA president’s response as inappropriate and capable of undermining the authority of the judiciary.

In a letter dated March 17, 2026, signed by its Executive Secretary, Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja, the group said, “Assuming, though not conceding, Mr. Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, in his capacity as President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), is entitled to freedom of speech under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, there are legally prescribed channels to express his dissatisfaction, such as submission of a petition against the said judge to the National Judicial Council (NJC).”

The NLS stressed that constitutional rights are not absolute, adding, “As a general rule of law, the right to freedom of speech, as well as other rights guaranteed under the Constitution of Nigeria, do not confer absolute rights.”

Citing what it described as a contradiction in Osigwe’s conduct, the group said, “Only one week ago, the same President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) wrote a public press statement admonishing the Code of Conduct Bureau to desist from inviting or investigating the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court… Therefore, it is a contradiction for the same President… to be quick to write a press statement in condemnation of Hon. Justice Mohammed Garba Umar instead of seeking his referral to the NJC.”

The association also referenced a previous warning by the CJN, stating, “Your Lordship stated that the NBA President and others should be specific by naming the specific judges that are corrupt as well as submitting concrete evidence of corruption against the said judges to the NJC.”

It further urged immediate action, saying, “It is for the foregoing reasons that we write to request your urgent intervention to refer the President of the NBA to the NJC for him to substantiate his claims.”

Raising concerns over possible implications, the NLS added, “It must be noted that the urgent intervention of Your Lordship is needed… so let it not be that this is an attempt to blackmail and intimidate judges.”

The group also decried what it described as declining professional standards among lawyers, noting, “The adherence to professional conduct is at an all-time low amongst Nigerian lawyers, as evident by the increasing number of cases at the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC).”

It concluded by emphasizing the powers of judges in maintaining order in court: “We conclude by stating that all Nigerian judges enjoy the power and authority to apply discretion in imposing any penalties for acts of contempt in the face of the court… Judges and other judicial officials must be granted more discretion to tackle this menace.”

BREAKING: CAF declares Morocco winners of 2025 AFCON Title, strips Senegal

0

In a rare decision, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has overturned the result of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, stripping Senegal of the title and declaring Morocco as champions.

The decision was announced by CAF’s Appeal Board, which awarded Morocco a 3–0 victory after ruling that Senegal forfeited the match following a dramatic walk-off during extra time.

The controversy erupted late in the final when Morocco’s Brahim Diaz fell inside the penalty area. Although the referee initially waved play on, a VAR review led to a penalty decision in favor of Morocco. The call sparked intense اعتراض from the Senegal bench, with head coach Pape Thiaw instructing his players to leave the pitch in protest.

In its ruling, CAF stated, “The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) Appeal Board decided today that in application of Article 84 of the Regulations of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the Final Match… with the result recorded as 3–0 in favor of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF).

“On the appeal by the FRMF regarding the application of Articles 82 and 84… the appeal is upheld, and the CAF Disciplinary Board decision is set aside.

“The CAF Appeal Board further finds that the conduct of the Senegal team falls within the scope of Articles 82 and 84 of the Regulations.

“It is declared that the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), through the conduct of its team, infringed Article 82… and in application of Article 84, the Senegal team is declared to have forfeited the match.”

CAF added that all other motions or requests for relief were dismissed, bringing an end to the contentious dispute.
