2027: Makinde, Turaki-led PDP heads to Supreme Court, moves to stop Wike-led convention

0

The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Taminu Turaki, the embattled factional chairman, has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the Court of Appeal judgment that nullified the party’s Ibadan convention.

The move comes amid stalled reconciliation efforts between the Makinde-led bloc and the camp associated with the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

In its appeal, the Makinde faction is also seeking an injunction to restrain Wike’s group from proceeding with its planned convention.

The development follows recent efforts to resolve internal disputes within the party. Wike had disclosed that he held a private meeting with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed in a bid to foster unity among aggrieved members.

However, sources indicated that the talks ended without a breakthrough, as the FCT minister reportedly maintained that the convention should proceed as scheduled.

Former US President Donald Trump has predicted that the Republican Party will win the 2028 presidential election in the United States.

Trump made the remark during a phone interview on Fox News’ The Five, expressing confidence that a Republican candidate would emerge victorious in the next election cycle.

“I would say it will be a Republican. I really believe that, and I think it will be a good one,” he said.

He added that the Republican Party has a strong pool of potential candidates, noting that a strategic combination of individuals could make the party difficult to defeat.

Trump also suggested it would be unfair for the Democratic Party to return to power after the next election.

The next US presidential election is scheduled for November 2028.

Trump, who has served two terms as president, is constitutionally ineligible to run again.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a 2-1 victory over Iran in an international friendly held in Antalya, Turkey, on Friday afternoon.

Head coach Eric Chelle fielded a strong lineup despite the absence of key players Victor Osimhen and Stanley Nwabali, a decision that proved effective early in the game.

Moses Simon gave Nigeria the lead in the sixth minute, finishing off an impressive solo run with a clinical strike. The Super Eagles extended their advantage in the second half when Akor Adams found the back of the net following a well-worked move involving Ademola Lookman.

Iran responded through Mehdi Taremi, who scored to reduce the deficit, but Nigeria held on to claim the win.

The encounter formed part of a four-nation invitational tournament featuring Nigeria, Iran, Jordan, and Costa Rica. The Super Eagles will return to action on Tuesday in another friendly against Jordan.

2027: Peter Obi’s ambition botched, Southeast may never be Nigeria’s president- Sam Amadi

0

A former chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and a loyalist to Peter Obi, labour party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Sam Amadi, has ignited fresh debate over the South-East’s prospects of producing Nigeria’s president, suggesting the region may never attain the position.

In a post shared on X on Friday, Amadi argued that the South-East faces slim chances of clinching the presidency in 2027, 2031, or even 2035.

He urged leaders and stakeholders in the region to prioritize economic development and expand their influence both within Nigeria and internationally, rather than focusing solely on political power.

According to him, “Maybe the Southeast has no chance at all, whether in 2027, 2031, or 2035, just as Jews never have in the US.” We can focus on building the South-East and prospering across Nigeria and the world.”

Amadi also questioned the value of the Nigerian presidency, describing it as an avenue often exploited for personal enrichment.

“By the way, what has been the worth of the Nigerian presidency? Just another opportunity for some people to amass vanishing wealth as they are doing now,” he added.

His remarks were in response to an earlier post by X user Demola Olarewaju, who contended that the South-East has lacked a clear pathway to the presidency since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

Olarewaju noted that the South-West has produced presidents through both nationalist and regional political strategies, while the South-South’s opportunity came by what he described as “chance or fate,” leaving the South-East without a similar opening.

He wrote, “Not my place to say, and I won’t. I’ll just add that a Yoruba has two pathways to the presidency in Nigeria since 1999: you can be a nationalist like Olusegun Obasanjo and win; you can still be an ethnocentrist like Bola Tinubu and win. The South-South got a chance by mistake or fate; the South-East has never.”

ADC association of desperate politicians, not opposition party—Femi-Fani Kayode

0

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, Femi Fani-Kayode, has dismissed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as lacking credibility as an opposition platform, describing it instead as a group driven by a quest for political power.

Speaking on the state of opposition politics in Nigeria, the former minister of aviation said the ADC is populated by individuals he believes are discredited and incapable of contributing meaningfully to national development. He added that the country’s opposition space has effectively collapsed.

In a post shared on his Facebook page, Fani-Kayode argued that opposition parties have failed in their core responsibility of holding the government accountable, blaming internal divisions and persistent conflicts for their weakness.

He faulted opposition leaders for engaging in infighting rather than presenting a united front, noting that their lack of coordination has diminished their effectiveness.

“I don’t see ADC as an opposition party. I see them as an association of people that are desperate for power — individuals that are discredited and have no hope of moving this nation forward. The opposition has collapsed in Nigeria,” he wrote.

He further criticized the opposition for what he described as an inability to function effectively, saying their constant disagreements

The convention will also attract top party chieftains from national, zonal, state, and ward levels, where new party leaders are expected to emerge.

The co-chairman of the media sub-committee for the convention and minister of information and national orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this during a world media briefing held at the Transcorp Hilton on Thursday.

Other dignitaries present at the briefing included Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa; Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo; Vice Chairman of the Central Committee Pius Ayim; Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication Sunday Dare; and Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, among others.

Idris said the theme of the convention, “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,” reflects the party’s identity, achievements, and future direction.

According to him, the gathering will bring together delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory for policy discussions, leadership elections, and the transition to a new set of party executives.

He noted that the event would serve as both a decision-making platform and a moment for reflection, consolidation, and direction-setting ahead of the party’s next phase.

FG Orders Work-from-Home

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has directed civil servants working within the Federal Secretariat in Abuja to work from home on Friday due to the influx of party leaders, delegates, and supporters expected at the convention venue, Eagle Square.

The directive was contained in a circular signed by Abdul S. U. Garba, Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office, on behalf of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

According to the circular, all access roads leading to and around the Federal Secretariat Complex, Phases I, II, and III, will be closed from March 27 to 28, 2026, due to the use of Eagle Square for the APC convention.

Workers in affected ministries, departments, and agencies, including those at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have been instructed to stay off-site on Friday.

The APC convention is expected to shape the party’s internal structure and set the tone for its political strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Strait of Hormuz: Trump explains 10-day extension for Iran

0

United States President Donald Trump has explained that his decision to extend a deadline given to Iran was influenced by the country’s recent actions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking during an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Trump said he opted for a longer timeline after Iran allowed oil vessels to pass safely through the key shipping route.

According to him, Iranian officials had initially requested a seven-day extension, but he approved a 10-day window instead, citing what he described as a positive gesture.

“They approached me politely through intermediaries, asking for more time, noting the deadline was too close,” Trump said. “They asked for seven days, and I gave them 10 because they allowed ships through.”

The US president added that the development signaled progress in ongoing engagements, suggesting Washington was dealing with the appropriate counterparts in Tehran.
