Poor network service: NCC directs MTN, Glo, Airtel, others to compensate subscribers

EVC NCC, Aminu Maida

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed mobile network operators (MNOs), including MTN, Glo, Airtel, and other service providers, to provide compensation to subscribers whose network quality of service experience is below specified targets within specific locations.

In a statement on Sunday by NCC spokesperson Nnenna Ukoha, the commission’s position is that subscribers should not be made to bear the full burden of service disruptions where operators fail to meet prescribed standards of service delivery.

Under this directive, erring operators will compensate affected users directly for breaches of Quality of Service (QoS) key performance indicators (KPIs).

Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) shall be required to pay these compensations for instances of poor quality of service recorded within specified time frames.

The compensation will be provided in the form of airtime credits, calculated based on subscribers’ average spending patterns and their presence within local government areas where service failures occur.

The directive is rooted in the Commission’s broader regulatory philosophy that places the consumer at the center of Nigeria’s telecommunications ecosystem. Telecommunications services today underpin economic activity, social interaction, and access to digital opportunities. When service quality is poor, the consequences affect productivity, commercial activities, and even public confidence in our communications system.

While regulatory fines have traditionally served as a deterrent against poor service delivery, the Commission is adopting a more consumer-focused approach that strengthens accountability within the industry.

The Commission has designed this measure to complement existing and ongoing efforts to strengthen service quality monitoring and enforce performance standards.

Further to this directive by the Commission to MNOs on compensation to consumers, the Commission is also mandating Tower Companies that own the critical infrastructure for Quality of Service delivery, such as masts, to invest in infrastructure with measurable outcomes using sums that it has fined these companies, in addition to other financial fines the Commission will deem appropriate.

The Commission will continue to reinforce the obligation of operators to invest consistently in network resilience, capacity expansion, and infrastructure upgrades to meet the growing demand for telecommunications services. At the same time, it will deploy regulatory tools that promote fairness, transparency, and accountability across the sector, ensuring that every subscriber receives the quality of service they deserve while sustaining a telecommunications industry capable of powering Nigeria’s digital future.

2027: Not all APC govs are with you, expect betrayal in Kaduna, Kano, others—Primate Ayodele to Tinubu

0

The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Elijah Ayodele, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to be wary of internal betrayal ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Ayodele said not all governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are fully aligned with the president, noting that some remain divided in their loyalty.

According to him, several northern states could pose challenges for Tinubu if strategic efforts are not intensified.

“Not all APC governors are with you for your presidency; some are one leg in and one leg out.

“There are governors you need to hold strongly in the north. He must work on Kano so he won’t see betrayal. Kaduna will not be easy for you to win; you need serious homework there.

“In Katsina, he also needs to work very well for him to win; in Kebbi and Gombe too, there will be betrayal in those states. Adamawa won’t be easy; there will be betrayal in the state. In Benue, too, it won’t be easy. The opposition is working in several northern states,” he said.

Ayodele, however, identified some states where the president is likely to enjoy stronger support in his re-election bid.

“Some states that will work well for him are Taraba, Niger, Sokoto, and Borno states; he shouldn’t joke with them at all.

“Atiku is doing serious underground work in the north, and they are almost striking a deal with him. However, these states are standing strong for the president,” he added.

2027: Saraki dumps Makinde,Turaki for Wike’s PDP camp ahead of convention

0

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has officially aligned with the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, ahead of the party’s National Convention scheduled for Sunday in Abuja.

Saraki’s move signals a break from the camp associated with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Taminu Turaki, the embattled factional chairman of PDP.

Addressing reporters on Saturday, Saraki expressed optimism about the convention, saying, “Thank you for all your efforts, for being here. God willing tomorrow will be a success, and Nigerians will begin to see they are on the right side of history. May God bless all of us.”

The development is considered a significant boost for Wike’s faction as the party grapples with internal divisions.

Also backing the convention is former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, further strengthening support for the Wike-led camp.

The PDP remains locked in a leadership crisis, with rival factions contesting control of the party. Despite legal threats and resistance from opposing groups, Wike’s faction has insisted that the convention will proceed as planned.

2027: Panic in Tinubu’s camp as Kwankwaso, supporters announce date to join ADC

0

There are indications of tension within President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) following confirmation that the Kwankwasiyya Movement has fixed a date for the defection of former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The development was disclosed in a notice issued on Saturday night.

According to the notice, the defection ceremony is slated for Monday, March 30, at Gidan Kwakwasiyya, Miller Road, Bompai, Kano State, and is expected to commence at 12 pm.

Kwankwaso’s planned move signals a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former governor contested the 2023 presidential election under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), where he secured 1,496,687 votes to finish fourth behind President Tinubu of the APC, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).

His anticipated defection is coming shortly after a meeting with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Abuja on Saturday.

2027: Nigerian Govt working to block my presidential ambition—Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has alleged that the federal government is making deliberate efforts to prevent him from emerging as a candidate in the 2027 general elections.

Obi made the claim during a 60-minute interview on Magic FM in Aba, monitored by Nigerian Newssphere.

The former Anambra State governor described himself as the most qualified among current presidential hopefuls, insisting that the priority of the present administration is to ensure he does not participate in the next election.

“The present government is bent on making sure I am not a candidate for any political party,” he said.

Obi also criticized the Electoral Act signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as “shameful” for allegedly omitting forgery as an offense.

“It is very shameful that the new Electoral Law, assented to by the President, excluded forgery as a crime,” he added.

Speaking further, Obi maintained that Nigeria’s economic challenges and leadership crisis require a leader with strong experience in business and governance.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Newssphere gathered that Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and several members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) were in Aba to receive him.

30 terrorists’ bodies found as Nigerian troops descend on ISWAP and Boko Haram in Borno[Video]

Troops of the Joint Task Force, North East, under Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have neutralized at least 38 ISWAP terrorists following a failed attack on a military base in Borno State.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by the task force’s Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba.

According to the statement, the insurgents launched an assault on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mandaragirau, located in Sector 2 of the state, but were swiftly overpowered by troops.

The military said its personnel responded with a well-coordinated ambush and a deliberate offensive-defensive strategy, forcing the attackers into a chaotic retreat.

It added that the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI provided close air support during the engagement, enabling precise strikes on the fleeing terrorists.

Further operations along the withdrawal routes reportedly inflicted additional casualties on the insurgents.

“About 38 terrorists were neutralized. Eight bodies were recovered at the scene, while human intelligence indicates that over 30 more bodies and weapons were left scattered along the Garin Mallum–Garin Gajere axis extending into the Timbuktu Triangle,” the statement said.

The military noted that the aftermath of the battle was evident from blood trails and abandoned equipment. Troops also recovered seven AK-47 rifles, eight magazines, four RPG bombs, and various ammunition.

No fatalities were recorded among the troops, although one Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle was hit by RPG fire. Injured personnel were promptly treated and stabilized.

The statement added that the heavy losses suffered by the terrorists have sparked celebrations among local communities, underscoring the continued operational success of OPHK forces in restricting insurgent activities in the region.

Bashir El-Rufai announces Father’s Release after ICPC, DSS arrest

0

Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, on Friday announced that his father has been released from detention, describing the development as a victory for his family.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Bashir expressed gratitude while strongly criticizing the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), which had detained the former governor over allegations of fraud and illegal wiretapping.

“Alhamdulillah. My beloved great legend of a father is being released from his unlawful and illegal detention at the hands of one of the most corrupt agencies in the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he wrote.

He further described the anti-corruption agency as “a lame excuse of a pathetic institution,” intensifying criticism of the circumstances surrounding his father’s detention.

Bashir also thanked supporters who stood by the family during the period, noting that the experience would not be forgotten. “Thank you all for all the support. Our family shall never forget these times. We have overcome, as the El-Rufais always do,” he added.

The ICPC had earlier taken El-Rufai into custody as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct and claims of unlawful surveillance activities during his time in office. However, details surrounding the terms of his release were not immediately made public as of the time of filing this report.

The development is expected to generate fresh debate over the role and operations of anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria, as well as concerns about due process and political accountability.

Neither the ICPC nor officials close to the former governor have issued a formal statement clarifying the conditions of his release.

This comes as Nigerian Newssphere reports that El-Rufai’s mother died on Friday.

The former governor of Kaduna State has been under detention after he alleged in a television interview that he got a wiretap of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, on his purported arrest.

Tiger Woods involved in terrible car crash in the US

Legendary golfer Tiger Woods was on Friday involved in a car crash in Jupiter Island, Florida.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the incident but did not disclose whether Woods sustained any injuries, leaving his condition unclear as of press time.

The crash reportedly occurred shortly after 2 p.m. local time, with images from the scene showing the vehicle tipped onto the driver’s side.

Woods has been working toward a return to competitive golf following a ruptured Achilles tendon in March 2025 and back surgery last October.

This marks another driving-related incident for the golf icon, who was previously involved in a serious crash in February 2021 that left him trapped in his vehicle after it rolled multiple times.

US: Iran-linked group hacked FBI Director Kash Patel’s email, other sensitive details

A hacking group believed to be linked to Iran has reportedly compromised the email account of FBI Director Kash Patel, exposing personal photos and sensitive documents online.

According to reports by US media outlets on Friday, including CNN, the breach has been attributed to the Handala Hack Team, a hacktivist group known for supporting Iran.

Sources familiar with the incident told CNN that the leaked emails contain a mix of personal, professional, and travel-related communications dating from 2011 to 2022—prior to Patel’s appointment as FBI director by President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, the United States Central Command disclosed that more than 300 American soldiers have been wounded since the outbreak of the Iran conflict on February 28.

Providing an update on Friday, US Navy Captain Tim Hawkins said about 303 personnel have been injured since the launch of Operation Epic Fury.

“The majority of these injuries are minor, and 273 troops have resumed their duties,” Hawkins stated.

He added that the latest figures show 13 soldiers have been killed in the conflict, with seven fatalities recorded in the Gulf region and six in Iraq.
