APC Convention: Abuja shutdown for ruling party, all you need to know the event

President Bola Tinubu, members of his cabinet, 32 state governors, and 8,453 delegates are set to participate in the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress holding Friday and Saturday in Abuja.

The convention will also attract top party chieftains from national, zonal, state, and ward levels, where new party leaders are expected to emerge.

The co-chairman of the media sub-committee for the convention and minister of information and national orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this during a world media briefing held at the Transcorp Hilton on Thursday.

Other dignitaries present at the briefing included Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa; Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo; Vice Chairman of the Central Committee Pius Ayim; Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication Sunday Dare; and Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, among others.

Idris said the theme of the convention, “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,” reflects the party’s identity, achievements, and future direction.

According to him, the gathering will bring together delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory for policy discussions, leadership elections, and the transition to a new set of party executives.

He noted that the event would serve as both a decision-making platform and a moment for reflection, consolidation, and direction-setting ahead of the party’s next phase.

FG Orders Work-from-Home

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has directed civil servants working within the Federal Secretariat in Abuja to work from home on Friday due to the influx of party leaders, delegates, and supporters expected at the convention venue, Eagle Square.

The directive was contained in a circular signed by Abdul S. U. Garba, Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office, on behalf of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

According to the circular, all access roads leading to and around the Federal Secretariat Complex, Phases I, II, and III, will be closed from March 27 to 28, 2026, due to the use of Eagle Square for the APC convention.

Workers in affected ministries, departments, and agencies, including those at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have been instructed to stay off-site on Friday.

The APC convention is expected to shape the party’s internal structure and set the tone for its political strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
