The awards were presented on Wednesday in Abuja at an event organized by the US Consulate, aimed at celebrating creativity while reinforcing cultural and economic ties between Nigeria and the United States.

Rasheedat Fagbenle emerged as the grand prize winner, while other recipients included Tito Abumere, Janefrancis Odinkemma Ugwu from Abuja, Cyril Usheshe from Cross River State, and Timileyin Durotoye from Osun State.

Speaking at the ceremony, the US Embassy’s Country Public Diplomacy Counsellor, Lee McManis, said the contest was created to deepen economic and cultural engagement between both countries. He reiterated the United States’ commitment to strengthening economic partnerships with Nigeria, noting that more than 100 major American companies currently operate in the country.

According to him, the expanding economic relationship continues to deliver mutual benefits to both nations.

“This contest goes beyond showcasing American products and brands. It celebrates the enduring partnership between the United States and Nigeria—one rooted in commerce, mutual respect, and a shared vision for progress,” McManis said.

In her reaction, grand prize winner Rasheedat Fagbenle, a 21-year-old final-year political science student at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, expressed delight at the recognition, describing it as a significant boost to her creative aspirations.

This comes after the US recently temporarily restricted Nigerian nationals and other countries from entering the US.

Ahmed, Komolafe resignation: Dangote controls Tinubu-Adeyanju

0

Activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has accused Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, of exercising undue influence over President Bola Ahmed and the federal government in an alleged attempt to entrench monopoly control in the country’s oil and gas sector.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Adeyanju claimed that Dangote was instrumental in the removal of former presidential aide Babagana Kyari after he allegedly refused to comply with certain demands linked to the commencement of operations at the Ibeju-Lekki refinery.

He further alleged that several key regulators within the petroleum industry have been eased out under similar pressure, describing the trend as a dangerous assault on institutional independence.

Adeyanju also insisted that allegations surrounding a reported $5 million payment by the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, for his children’s education in Switzerland must be thoroughly investigated and not swept under the carpet.

“The $5 million allegation must not be allowed to die, even if investigations eventually establish that no such payment was made,” Adeyanju said. “This is not about morality; it is about power, market dominance, and monopoly.”

He warned that the Fefederal governmentust resist what he described as “economic blackmail” and assert its authority in regulating the sector.

Reaffirming the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), Adeyanju noted that the law promotes competition and explicitly discourages monopolistic practices within Nigeria’s petroleum market.

He also criticized the pricing structure of Dangote’s refinery, arguing that locally refined petroleum products from Ibeju-Lekki are reportedly more expensive than imported fuel from countries such as Argentina and Brazil. Adeyanju further questioned claims about the quality of some of the refinery’s products.

“No one forced Dangote to build a refinery of this magnitude,” he said. “Every investment comes with risks, and Nigerians should not be compelled to pay higher prices or endure limited options under the banner of patriotism.”

Adeyanju called on anti-corruption agencies to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the alleged $5 million expenditure and determine whether any inducements were offered or rejected, stressing that only a transparent probe can safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s petroleum sector.

This comes as Ahmed and Gbenga Komolafe of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission on Wednesday announced their resignation.

Dangote and Ahmed began a renewed feud over the latter’s allegation.

Dangote: Nigerian filling stations slash fuel price by N171

0

Petrol prices have begun to tumble across Nigeria, with several filling stations slashing pump rates just days after Dangote Refinery announced a reduction in its gantry price for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

A survey by Nigerian Newssphere in Abuja on Wednesday showed that major marketers, including MRS, AA Rano, and Bovas, have adjusted their prices downward. MRS now sells petrol at N739 per liter, down from N910, while AA Rano reduced its price to N840 per liter from N910. Bovas also cut its pump price to N865 per liter from the previous N910.

Overall, the reductions represent a price drop of between N45 and N171 per liter across the affected outlets.

However, not all marketers have followed suit. Filling stations operated by Ranoil, Empire Energy, and several others were still selling petrol at between N910 and N912 per liter as of Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) retail outlets, including those along the Kubwa Expressway in Abuja, were out of stock at the time of filing this report.

Checks further revealed that the current ex-depot prices stood at N703 per liter for Dangote Refinery and Pinnacle, while Bovas was selling at N708 per liter.

The latest price adjustments come days after Aliko Dangote, president of Dangote Refinery, stated that petrol should not sell for more than N740 per liter in Nigeria—a remark that has since sparked intense competition in the downstream oil sector.

Recall that Dangote Refinery last week slashed its gantry price for petrol from N828 to N699 per liter, triggering the ongoing price war among fuel marketers nationwide.

Dangote wins as NMDPRA Boss Farouk Ahmed resigns amid allegations

The president of Dangote Refinery, Aliko Dangote, has recorded a major victory following the resignation of the chief executive officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed.

Ahmed’s resignation came less than 24 hours after Dangote publicly leveled allegations against him, including claims that $5 million was paid for the education of his children.

In a related development, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Gbenga Komolafe, has also stepped down from office.

The resignations were confirmed on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. He disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has already nominated replacements for both regulatory agencies.

According to Onanuga, President Tinubu has forwarded the names of the nominees to the Senate, requesting their swift confirmation.

“To fill these positions, President Tinubu has written to the Senate, seeking expedited approval of Oritsemeyiwa Amanorisewo Eyesan as Chief Executive Officer of the NUPRC and Engineer Saidu Aliyu Mohammed as Chief Executive Officer of the NMDPRA,” the statement read.

Onanuga added that the nominees are seasoned professionals with extensive experience in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Ajaero, Sowore lead nationwide protest against Tinubu

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have begun converging on the union’s national secretariat in Abuja as a nationwide protest against worsening insecurity across the country kicks off on Tuesday.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, is already on the ground alongside key labor leaders and civil society allies. Also present are activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore and members of the Revolution Now Movement.

The gathering has attracted a heavy security presence, with operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Department of State Services (DSS) deployed around the venue.

Recall that the NLC had earlier announced December 17 for the commencement of a nationwide protest to draw attention to the growing insecurity and demand urgent action from the authorities.

On Tuesday Ajaero and the NLC had met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at Aso Rock over the protest.

Tinted Glass Permit: It’s fraud—NBA slams police over plan resumption

0

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly criticized the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) over its decision to resume enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy from January 2, 2026, describing the move as a blatant disregard for the rule of law and the authority of the courts.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, said the police action amounted to “a grave affront to the majesty of the court” and reflected a troubling pattern of disrespect for due process by an institution constitutionally mandated to uphold the law.

The tinted glass permit policy, introduced in April 2025, requires vehicle owners to obtain annual permits through an online platform. However, the policy has been widely criticized amid allegations of harassment, extortion, and abuse by law enforcement officers.

Osigwe recalled that the NBA instituted a suit on September 2, challenging the legality of the policy. The association argued that the regulation is rooted in an obsolete military-era law and questioned the legality of fees allegedly being paid to a private company. According to the NBA, the policy is more of a revenue-generating scheme than a genuine security measure.

He further stated that the National Assembly lacks the constitutional power to enact the law underpinning the policy and maintained that, even if such a law were valid, its current implementation by the police amounts to an unlawful money-making venture.

“The policy is unconstitutional, obnoxious, and poses a serious threat to citizens’ rights and economic well-being,” the NBA said, adding that its enforcement would further compound Nigeria’s multiple layers of taxation and impose additional financial hardship on citizens.

Osigwe noted that following engagements between the police and stakeholders, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had agreed to suspend enforcement pending the outcome of court proceedings. Based on that undertaking, the Federal High Court struck out a motion for injunction on December 12.

He expressed shock that the police would, only days later, announce a resumption of enforcement, describing the decision as “reckless” and “contemptuous.”

“The Nigeria Police Force must respect the authority of the courts. Failure to do so will compel the NBA to initiate contempt proceedings against the Inspector General of Police and his spokesperson,” Osigwe warned.

The NBA also pledged to provide legal assistance to any individual harassed or prosecuted under the policy and called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene to prevent what it described as an unjustified burden on Nigerians and an erosion of judicial authority.

Osigwe said the association’s position highlights the persistent tension between law enforcement practices and the protection of constitutional rights in Nigeria.
