Poor performance: Zamfara lawmaker narrowly escaped death after constituents attacked him

0

Residents of Dansadau town in the Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Tuesday attacked a member of the State House of Assembly, Kabiru Mikailu, accusing him of poor performance and neglect of his constituency.

A viral video circulating online shows the lawmaker struggling to escape as an angry crowd descended on him during the incident.

According to reports, Mikailu was assaulted when he accompanied Governor Dauda Lawal on a visit to the troubled community, where the governor had gone to flag off key development projects.

The residents accused the lawmaker of abandoning the area since his election, alleging that he neither visited the community nor engaged with constituents during important occasions.

In the video, aggrieved youths could be heard chanting “bamayi,” a Hausa expression commonly used to convey rejection or anger, as the situation escalated.

2026 World Cup: FIFA voids three matches over ineligible players as Super Eagles await verdict

0

Hope has been rekindled for Nigeria after FIFA sanctioned Malaysia for fielding ineligible players, overturning three matches with 3–0 defeats.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) confirmed on Wednesday that FIFA imposed the sanctions following an investigation into player eligibility. The affected results include friendly wins over Palestine and Singapore, as well as a draw against Cape Verde.

FIFA also suspended seven players who were found to have submitted forged documents falsely claiming Malaysian ancestry. The players are Hector Hevel, Jon Irazabal, Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca and Joao Brandao Figueiredo.

In addition to an earlier $440,000 fine, FAM will pay an extra $12,500 as part of the latest punishment.

The investigation was triggered by a complaint after Malaysia’s 4–0 victory over Vietnam in June during an Asian Cup qualifier, a match in which two of the suspended players scored. FIFA concluded that none of the players had a parent or grandparent born in Malaysia, a key requirement for national team eligibility.

The development comes as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has petitioned FIFA, alleging that the Democratic Republic of Congo fielded ineligible players in their 2026 World Cup qualifying clash against the Super Eagles.

DR Congo defeated Nigeria on penalties in the African play-offs and are now preparing for the intercontinental play-off final, as Nigeria await FIFA’s decision on the complaint.

BREAKING: N2.2bn fraud: Court grants Ex-Minister, Ngige bail

0

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has finally granted the embattled former Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige, liberal bail over alleged N2.2 billion fraud charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Justice Maryam Aliyu Hassan on Thursday adopted the administrative bail earlier granted Ngige by the EFCC on self-recognizance but ordered him to produce “a director in the federal government” as surety. The surety must own landed property in the FCT, deposit the original Certificate of Occupancy, and submit an international passport to the court.

Pending the fulfillment of the bail conditions, Ngige is to remain in Kuje Correctional Centre.

Ruling on the application, Justice Hassan held that the charges were bailable and stressed that “the Constitution presumes the defendant innocent until the contrary is proved.” She warned courts against “outlandish, excessive, harsh, and stringent bail conditions,” noting that such could amount to a refusal of bail.

Ngige, a former Anambra State governor, was arraigned on December 12 on an eight-count charge bordering on corrupt practices, to which he pleaded not guilty. His counsel, Patrick Ikwueto, SAN, argued for bail, while EFCC counsel, Sylvanus Tahir, SAN, opposed it, alleging that Ngige violated an earlier administrative bail.

The EFCC accused Ngige of abusing his position as supervising minister of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) between 2015 and 2023 to award contracts worth hundreds of millions of naira to companies linked to his associates and of corruptly receiving cash gifts through campaign and scholarship organizations.

Justice Hassan has fixed January 28 and 29 for the commencement of trial.

During the conversation, the DMW boss also spoke about his dream collaborations, revealing that he hopes to work with global pop icon Rihanna, as well as American singer Kehlani.

Ahmed resignation: Reveal your source of wealth in 1980s —Mohammed dares Dangote

0

A Nigerian petroleum expert, Engr. Kailani Mohammed, has challenged business mogul Aliko Dangote to publicly disclose how he amassed his wealth during his time in Port Harcourt in the 1980s.

Mohammed made the remark while responding to Dangote’s allegations against the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed.

According to the oil expert, Dangote should refrain from making personal attacks while pursuing what he described as an attempt to monopolise the petroleum industry.

He had accused Farouk Ahmed of allegedly spending about $5 million on the secondary education of his children in Switzerland. In a widely circulated video, the billionaire challenged the NMDPRA boss to publicly deny the allegation, insisting that he had incontrovertible evidence.

Reacting during an interview on Trust TV, Mohammed criticised Dangote’s approach, saying personal issues should not be dragged into industry disputes.

“When you are fighting, you don’t touch people personally,” Mohammed said. “Can Dangote tell us about the source of his wealth in the 1980s when he was in Port Harcourt? Who is clean?

“Every time there is an attempt to monopolise the industry, allegations are raised against individuals. In the 1980s, we are aware of what happened in Port Harcourt and how he made his money, yet nobody brought up these issues then.”

Mohammed also referenced earlier comments by Farouk Ahmed on the operations of the Dangote Refinery, noting that claims about its production capacity had been previously addressed.

“He said it before that while the Dangote Refinery was producing about 40 per cent, the Fluid Catalytic Cracker (FCC), which would raise capacity to about 80 or 90 per cent, is not working. Farouk said it earlier, and we reiterated it,” Mohammed added.

Visa ban: Why US imposes restrictions on Nigeria—Ex-Minister, Mohammed

0

Former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Nurudeen Mohammed has attributed the United States’ partial travel ban on Nigeria to prolonged diplomatic gaps and damaging domestic narratives that went unchallenged internationally.

Speaking on Prime Time, a program on Arise Television on Wednesday, Mohammed said Nigeria’s failure to appoint ambassadors for more than two years meant the country lacked credible voices to defend its interests abroad.

His comments followed a recent proclamation by US President Donald Trump, which expanded travel restrictions to include Nigeria and 15 other countries.

According to Mohammed, negative conversations within Nigeria, especially around insecurity and governance, were allowed to spread globally without official clarification or pushback.

“The conversation within Nigeria became very toxic, and nobody was speaking on our behalf,” he said. “All of these issues, left unchecked, eventually collided with the Trump presidency, which is not one to take things lightly.”

He described the period as a difficult one for Nigeria, noting that many observers had long anticipated the consequences of poor global engagement.

“For months, almost up to a year, Nigeria has had what I would call infamous visibility around the world,” Mohammed stated. “The country has been dragged from many directions, both domestically and internationally, and sometimes it is our own internal conversations that are weaponized against us.”

The former minister stressed that the absence of diplomatic representation at key global levels allowed what he described as “unsavory voices” to dominate the narrative about Nigeria.

“At the global level, the fact that Nigeria has been without proper representation for more than two years cannot be ignored. Our side of the story was never heard,” he added.

Mohammed also pointed to how sensitive security issues were handled and discussed publicly, arguing that such moments further harmed Nigeria’s international image.

It’s impeachable offence—Nigerians react as lawmaker Abdulsamman Dasuki alleges alteration of new tax laws

0

The allegation by a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki, that newly passed tax laws were altered ahead of their implementation has sparked widespread public outrage.

Dasuki, in a video that has gone viral on X, claimed that the versions of the tax laws gazetted and made available to the public differ from those passed by the National Assembly. He alleged that the changes were substantial and not mere clerical errors, warning that such discrepancies amount to a breach of the Nigerian Constitution.

Addressing the House, the lawmaker said what lawmakers approved on the floor was not what was eventually published.

“What was passed on this floor is not what is gazetted. I gave my vote, and it was counted, yet I am seeing something completely different,” he said.

“This is a breach of the Constitution and our laws, and it should not be taken lightly by this Honorable House.”

In response, Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, assured members that the matter would be investigated.

The allegation has since triggered strong reactions from Nigerians, many of whom described the situation as grave and potentially impeachable if proven. An X user, OurFaveOnlineDoc, accused the presidency of undermining the legislature, calling the development “a new low for the country.”

Human rights lawyer and activist Inibehe Effiong also weighed in, stating that any confirmed alteration of laws passed by parliament would amount to an impeachable offense.

“This is an impeachable offense,” he wrote on X.

Another user, Obiasogu David, described the allegation as “constitutional fraud” if found to be true.

As of the time of filing this report, the presidency has not issued an official response to the claims.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the new tax law, signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June, is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2025.

AFCON 2025: Uncertainty grows as Chelle delays Super Eagles captaincy decision

0

With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations set to kick off in a matter of days, uncertainty continues to surround the Super Eagles following the delay in announcing a new team captain.

The development comes after the retirement of long-serving leaders William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa ahead of the tournament.

Troost-Ekong was the first to step aside, making his decision public even before the Super Eagles’ provisional 54-man squad was reduced to the final 28 players. The Al-Kholood defender chose to end his international career on a high note, exiting to widespread acclaim.

On Wednesday, Musa followed suit, ending speculation about his availability by officially announcing his retirement from international football. The former captain leaves as Nigeria’s most-capped player with 111 appearances and remains the only Nigerian to score goals at two separate FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Amid the leadership vacuum, reports suggest Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has approved Wilfred Ndidi as the next captain of the national team. Midfielders Moses Simon and Alex Iwobi are reportedly in line to serve as his deputies.

However, questions remain over whether Napoli striker and team talisman Victor Osimhen will be included in the Super Eagles’ leadership group as the team prepares for the continental showpiece.

Ahmed, Komolafe resignations: Tinubu’s boys have eyes on NMDPRA, NUPRC before Dangote’s allegation—Arise News Director

0

Director of News at Arise Television, Sumner Sambo, has said that long before the recent resignations at Nigeria’s petroleum regulatory agencies, some individuals linked to President Bola Tinubu’s administration had been positioning themselves for top roles within the sector.

Sambo noted that aside from the corruption allegations raised by President of Dangote Refinery, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, there had been sustained pressure from interests within the Tinubu administration seeking control of strategic positions such as the Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

His comments followed the resignation of Engineer Farouk Ahmed as CEO of NMDPRA and Gbenga Komolafe as CEO of NUPRC. Both officials were appointed in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari to head the agencies created under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

According to Sambo, it is common in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry for incoming governments to attract loyalists who aspire to occupy key regulatory positions.

“Anyone who understands how the petroleum and gas industry works in Nigeria knows that once a new government comes in, there are always people who would be eyeing these positions,” he said.

He explained that the leadership of the agencies often comes under pressure to meet certain expectations set by political actors, adding that failure to align with such expectations can lead to tensions.

Sambo stated that Gbenga Komolafe, in particular, had faced sustained pressure despite what he described as strong performance in office. He cited Komolafe’s efforts to improve Nigeria’s oil metering system, which has long been criticized as porous, and his engagement of private firms to upgrade production measurement as notable achievements.

He also clarified that the two officials were not formally sacked but resigned, stressing that the circumstances surrounding their exits remain politically sensitive.

“Farouk Ahmed is said to have resigned due to allegations against him. But even with a resignation, questions remain about accountability and whether anti-graft agencies will pursue the allegations,” Sambo said, adding that Komolafe may have become a casualty of the broader political situation.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has forwarded names of new nominees to the Senate for confirmation. In a letter transmitted on Wednesday, the president sought approval for Oritsemeyiwa Amanorisewo Eyesan as Chief Executive Officer of NUPRC and Engineer Saidu Aliyu Mohammed as Chief Executive Officer of NMDPRA.
