Wike: Fubara’s impeachment plot takes new twist as Minority Leader, Abbey make u-turn

0

There was a fresh twist on Monday in the ongoing impeachment moves against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, as two lawmakers involved in the process announced a change of position.

The Minority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly and member representing Omuma State Constituency, Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo, alongside Hon. Peter Abbey, who represents Degema Constituency, said they had retraced their steps in the impeachment plot.

Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt, the lawmakers appealed to the Assembly to reconsider the impeachment process, citing interventions from elders and leaders within and outside the state.

According to them, the appeals prompted a rethink of their earlier stance. They urged their colleagues to explore peaceful and conciliatory options rather than proceed with impeachment.

“We appeal to our fellow lawmakers to temper justice with mercy and see how this matter can be resolved without resorting to impeachment proceedings,” they said.

The lawmakers added that after listening to numerous calls from elders and leaders, they decided to plead with their colleagues to reconsider their actions and seek an amicable resolution, even while acknowledging alleged constitutional infractions by the governor and his deputy.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Governor Fubara and his deputy were served with notices of impeachment last Thursday over allegations of gross misconduct.

Meanwhile, political analysts have linked the impeachment moves to the ongoing political rift between the governor and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Tensions between both camps have reportedly intensified in recent weeks amid claims that Wike has opposed Fubara’s chances of securing re-election.

“Where is Nigerian president?” Peter Obi questions Tinubu absence amid widespread hardship

0

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized President Bola Tinubu over what he described as the president’s prolonged silence and continued absence from the country amid Nigeria’s growing economic and security challenges.

In a statement shared on his official X handle on Monday, Obi questioned the whereabouts of the President, noting that Nigerians have not heard directly from him since December 2025, despite deepening poverty, rising insecurity, and worsening economic hardship.

Obi warned that Nigeria is projected to have about 140 million people living in extreme poverty by the end of the year, placing the country at the top of the global list of nations with the highest number of extremely poor people.

He also drew attention to increasing hunger, deteriorating security, high youth unemployment, and alarming infant mortality rates across the country.

According to Obi, President Tinubu reportedly spent about 196 days outside Nigeria in 2023, a period he said exceeded the time the President spent within the country, even as the nation faced what he described as a national emergency.

The former Anambra State governor further criticized the president for failing to address Nigerians during the New Year, describing the silence as a neglect of leadership responsibility at a critical time.

“Where is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?” Obi asked, adding that the question was a demand for accountability in the face of widespread hardship.

He said Nigerians were left without reassurance or guidance during the New Year, alleging that the President chose to spend the period on holiday in Europe while the country grappled with hunger, anxiety, and uncertainty.

BREAKING: Rivers: Police invite Ex-SSG Danagogo over alleged plot to assassinate FCT Minister Wike

0

The Rivaers State Police Command has invited a former secretary to the state government, Tammy Danagogo, for questioning over an alleged plot to assassinate the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The invitation follows a leaked phone conversation reportedly involving Danagogo and an arrested suspect linked to the alleged plot. An anonymous source told Nigerian Newsphere that the discussion centered on plans to bring in Israeli nationals to carry out the assassination.

“Danagogo and Pastor Tombari were allegedly discussing a plan to invite Israelis to kill the minister,” the source said. “The leaked conversation is already with the police, and Danagogo has been invited for questioning.”

Efforts to confirm the development with the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringo Koko, were ongoing as of the time of filing this report. When contacted, she said she would verify the information and respond later.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested Tombari Joseph Gbeneol, a Port Harcourt–based pastor, in connection with the alleged plot. His arrest reportedly followed the interception of a phone call between him and Danagogo.

According to security sources, the monitored conversation allegedly involved discussions about recruiting foreign nationals to execute the plan, with the call ending on a note about seeking financial backing from Rivers State.

Sheikh Gumi calls for phase out of Almajiri System in Northern Nigeria

0

Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has proposed the adoption of a “Marshall Plan” to gradually eliminate the Almajiri system in Northern Nigeria.

Gumi said the region has the potential to lead Nigeria’s education sector within the next 15 years if deliberate policies are implemented to reform the system.

He attributed this optimism to the presence of about 150 public and private universities across Northern Nigeria, noting that the institutions provide a strong foundation for educational transformation.

In a post on X, the cleric argued that with the right framework, the North has enough capacity to drive significant progress in education.

According to him, a Marshall Plan-style intervention should focus on phasing out the Almajiri system by introducing a curriculum that integrates moral instruction with modern education.

Gumi also stressed that peace and stability are critical for the success of such reforms.

“Northern Nigeria, with approximately 150 public (federal and state) and private universities, is expected to lead the educational sector of Nigerian society in the next fifteen years,” he said.

“What should be done is to implement a ‘Marshall Plan’ to phase out the Almajiri system, combining a curriculum that blends moral education with modernity. Therefore, we need peace.”

2027: What will determine Peter Obi’s chances against Atiku—Bashir Ahmad

0

Former media aide to late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has said that the outcome of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primaries will determine whether Peter Obi can defeat former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Ahmad noted that while Obi enjoys strong support among young voters, Atiku retains the advantage of long-established political structures and party machinery.

In a post on X, Ahmad wrote: “The likelihood of Peter Obi prevailing over Atiku Abubakar in the ADC primaries largely hinges on the mode of the primaries. Obi commands significant support among young voters, while Atiku enjoys the backing of established structures and the party machinery.”

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, recently defected to the ADC.

Reports indicate that Obi is expected to contest the ADC presidential ticket alongside Atiku Abubakar.

Manchester United’s hopes of salvaging silverware this season suffered a major blow on Sunday night as they crashed out of the FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat to Brighton.

The Red Devils, already out of Europe and previously eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town, now face the real prospect of ending the campaign without a trophy.

United made an encouraging start at Old Trafford but fell behind early when Brajan Gruda found the net in the 12th minute. Brighton tightened their grip on the tie soon after, with former United forward Danny Welbeck punishing his old club with a composed finish to make it 2-0.

Benjamin Sesko reduced the deficit for the hosts in the second half, but his goal ultimately served only as a consolation, as Brighton held firm to secure progression.

United will now turn their attention to the Premier League, where they face a daunting derby clash against Manchester City in their next fixture at Old Trafford.
