There was a fresh twist on Monday in the ongoing impeachment moves against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, as two lawmakers involved in the process announced a change of position.
The Minority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly and member representing Omuma State Constituency, Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo, alongside Hon. Peter Abbey, who represents Degema Constituency, said they had retraced their steps in the impeachment plot.
Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt, the lawmakers appealed to the Assembly to reconsider the impeachment process, citing interventions from elders and leaders within and outside the state.
According to them, the appeals prompted a rethink of their earlier stance. They urged their colleagues to explore peaceful and conciliatory options rather than proceed with impeachment.
“We appeal to our fellow lawmakers to temper justice with mercy and see how this matter can be resolved without resorting to impeachment proceedings,” they said.
The lawmakers added that after listening to numerous calls from elders and leaders, they decided to plead with their colleagues to reconsider their actions and seek an amicable resolution, even while acknowledging alleged constitutional infractions by the governor and his deputy.
Nigerian Newssphere reports that Governor Fubara and his deputy were served with notices of impeachment last Thursday over allegations of gross misconduct.
Meanwhile, political analysts have linked the impeachment moves to the ongoing political rift between the governor and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Tensions between both camps have reportedly intensified in recent weeks amid claims that Wike has opposed Fubara’s chances of securing re-election.
