Why I will never stop having children — former Nigerian president, Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has said he will “never stop having children,” explaining that the continuity of life extends beyond direct parenthood to future generations.

Obasanjo made the remark on Monday while hosting the leadership of the Paediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN), led by its President, Dr. Ekanem Ekure, at his residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

He noted that although he no longer gives birth and his children are now adults, the cycle of life continues through his grandchildren and succeeding generations.

“I am no more giving birth to children and my children are now adults. But my children are still having children and my grandchildren are having children, so I will never stop having children,” Obasanjo said.

He added that the process is unending, stressing that generational continuity places a lifelong responsibility on society to protect and care for children.

“Because when I stopped, my children will not stop, and when my children stopped, my grandchildren will not stop. The cycle continues,” he stated.

The former president emphasised that the future of any nation depends on how well children are protected, describing them as the foundation of every civilisation. He called for improved child care, survival, and development across the country.

Obasanjo also commended paediatricians for their crucial role in saving children’s lives, describing paediatrics as a unique and demanding medical specialty.

He pledged to support initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing of children in Nigeria and globally, and accepted PAN’s request for him to serve as an advocate for child health and wellness.

“Children are not like adults. They cannot always explain what they are feeling, so your area of specialisation is very unique,” he said, assuring PAN of his commitment to the cause.

Earlier, Dr. Ekure described Obasanjo as a respected global statesman, noting that PAN sought his support due to the growing challenges facing child health in Nigeria.

Sultan of Sokoto announces first day of Sha’aban 1447 AH

0

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced Tuesday, January 20, 2026, as the first day of Sha’aban 1447 AH.

The declaration was contained in a statement issued on Monday, January 19, 2026, by the Wazirin Sokoto, who also serves as Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council.

According to the statement, Monday, January 19, marked the 29th day of Rajab 1447 AH, the traditional day set aside in Islam for the sighting of the new moon to determine the beginning of Sha’aban.

It recalled that the Sultan had earlier proclaimed Monday, December 22, 2025, as the first day of Rajab 1447 AH, in line with the Islamic lunar calendar, thereby fixing the moon sighting for Sha’aban accordingly.

The Sultan called on Muslims across Nigeria to use the period for increased prayers, peaceful coexistence, and sustained devotion to Allah.

Nigerians land in fresh trouble as Dangote, others increase cement price

0

Nigerians are facing renewed pressure as the prices of cement produced by major manufacturers, including Dangote Cement and Mangal, surged sharply in January 2026.

Findings by DAILY POST show that the price of a 50-kilogram bag of cement has risen to about N10,500, up from roughly N9,800 in December 2025. The increase of about N700–N1,000 per bag represents a jump of approximately 7.1 percent.

The new prices have taken effect across Abuja, Nasarawa, Niger, and several other states, with variations depending on location.

The latest hike has occurred despite Nigeria’s abundant raw materials for cement production in areas such as Obajana in Kogi State, Okpella in Edo State, and other parts of the country. It also contradicts earlier assurances by key industry stakeholders that cement prices would not exceed N7,000 per bag.

The rising cost of cement is already worsening Nigeria’s housing crisis, pushing rents further out of reach for many citizens. DAILY POST reports that the minimum annual rent for a self-contained apartment has climbed by more than 100 percent to about N800,000 from roughly N400,000, particularly in major urban centers such as Abuja and Lagos.

The development comes amid persistent inflationary pressures. Nigeria’s inflation rate rose to 15.15 percent in December 2025 from 14.45 percent the previous month, further eroding household purchasing power. Critics say the government has remained largely silent on the twin challenges of rising rents and the escalating cost of living.

Reacting to the development, the former president of the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), Alhaji Aliyu Oroji Wamakko, expressed deep concern over the continued increase in cement prices.

Speaking to DAILY POST, Wamakko warned that higher cement costs pose a serious threat to property development, housing affordability, and job creation in the country. He said rising construction costs would inevitably translate into higher rents, while many businesses in the construction value chain could be forced to shut down, leading to job losses.

He recalled that last year, cement producers such as Dangote and BUA were summoned by the Presidency after prices climbed to about N10,000 per bag, during which they reportedly pledged to reduce prices to around N7,000. According to him, the reasons for the current hike remain unclear, as the government has yet to offer any explanation.

Wamakko also criticized the apparent inactivity of the Price Control Board, noting that the agency should be monitoring and addressing such increases. He said the situation has become unpredictable, making it difficult to determine how high cement prices could rise.

He attributed the surge to increased demand driven by major road construction projects, currency fluctuations, and Nigeria’s dependence on imported chemicals and equipment used in cement production.

The former REDAN president called for a comprehensive review of the cement production and pricing system to identify the root causes of the problem and implement sustainable solutions.

Nollywood Actress Sarah Martins hospitalized after sudden collapse

Nollywood actress Sarah Martins has been rushed to hospital after suffering a sudden health emergency that caused her to collapse.

The actress disclosed the incident on her Instagram page, revealing that she woke up feeling numb and unable to sense parts of her body, a condition that left her deeply frightened.

Despite the alarming symptoms, Martins said she went ahead with her routine activities, including visiting her shop to carry out inventory and interview prospective staff. She reportedly slumped during the exercise and was immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention.

According to her account, doctors conducted more than 30 medical tests, including screenings for cancer, fibroids, kidney and liver conditions, malaria, and typhoid. All the tests reportedly returned negative results.

Sharing her experience, Martins attributed the episode to prolonged exhaustion, noting that she worked continuously throughout December without taking time off, even when her staff travelled for the festive season.

“I woke up and couldn’t feel any part of my body. For a moment, I felt lifeless. I still pushed myself to work, and that was when I slumped,” she wrote, adding that medical personnel confirmed she was extremely exhausted and in need of complete rest.

The actress said she is currently recuperating on a hospital bed and expressed gratitude to God for preserving her health. She also assured fans that she would recover fully.

Following her post, fans and colleagues across the entertainment industry have flooded her social media page with prayers, messages of support, and well-wishes for her speedy recovery.

Nigerian university student commits suicide after spending tuition on gambling, betting

0

A 300-level computer science student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, Niger State, Kelvin Danlami, has died in a tragic incident reportedly linked to gambling and sport betting.

Reports indicate that the student passed away on Monday, January 19, 2026, after allegedly mismanaging N150,000 given to him for house rent through gambling activities.

Reacting to the development, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the university expressed deep sorrow over the loss. In a statement signed by the SUG General Secretary, Comrade Aliyu Abubakar, the union extended condolences to Danlami’s family, friends, and the entire university community.

The SUG described his death as a painful and irreparable loss, not only to his immediate family but also to the Department of Computer Science and the institution at large.

“On behalf of the entire student community of IBB University, Lapai, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, friends, the Department of Computer Science, and all students of the university over this great and painful loss,” the statement read.

Rivers: Tinubu didn’t save Fubara, Wike winning 100% over impeachment—Rufai Oseni

0

Arise Television presenter Rufai Oseni has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against allowing the impeachment process initiated against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to proceed.

Oseni argued that the removal of Fubara would reflect poorly on President Tinubu’s ability to protect governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a post shared on his Facebook page, Oseni said the impeachment plot undermines claims by government officials that the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State was meant to protect the governor and restore stability.

According to him, the continuation of impeachment proceedings despite the state of emergency shows that no lasting peace or settlement has been achieved. He added that the situation suggests the intervention has failed to safeguard Fubara’s position.

Oseni further observed that the political struggle appears to be tilting in favor of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, noting that Wike currently holds the upper hand in the ongoing dispute.

He raised several questions about the unfolding events, including whether President Tinubu would intervene to stop the impeachment, whether he would side with Governor Fubara, and whether the Chief Judge would allow the process to continue. Oseni also queried whether existing court orders would be respected and if the crisis could push Wike towards aligning with the opposition.

He concluded by saying that the outcome of the political standoff would become clearer with time.

“Also, for those government officials that say the state of emergency was to save Fubara, that argument has been nullified by this impeachment notice.

“Despite the state of emergency, no peace and settlement, President Tinubu’s state of emergency didn’t save Fubara because an impeachment is still going ahead.

“One thing is certain currently: Wike is leading in this fight. Wike 100, President Tinubu 50.

“Will President Tinubu be able to save Fubara from Wike? Will President Tinubu side with Fubara?

“Will the Chief Judge go ahead with the process? Will the court order hold?

“Will Wike work against Tinubu and probably join the opposition? Time will tell.”

AFCON Final: FIFA president Infantino  speaks on Senegal players’ walkout against Morocco

0

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has weighed in on the chaos that marred the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and hosts Morocco in Rabat on Sunday.

The tense encounter, which Senegal eventually won 1–0, was overshadowed by controversial officiating decisions that sparked outrage among Senegalese players. Match referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded a late penalty to Morocco following a foul on Brahim Diaz, a decision that infuriated the Senegal camp.

Senegal’s frustration was compounded by an earlier call that saw one of their goals disallowed for a foul on Achraf Hakimi. In protest, several Senegal players briefly walked off the pitch before being persuaded to return by teammate Sadio Mané.

Reacting to the incident, Infantino described the players’ decision to leave the field as unacceptable, stressing the need for respect and discipline in football.

“It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and equally, violence can’t be tolerated in our sport. It is simply not right,” Infantino said.

He added that while emotions can run high, teams must respect match officials and adhere to the Laws of the Game, warning that any action to the contrary threatens the integrity of football.
