A 300-level computer science student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, Niger State, Kelvin Danlami, has died in a tragic incident reportedly linked to gambling and sport betting.
Reports indicate that the student passed away on Monday, January 19, 2026, after allegedly mismanaging N150,000 given to him for house rent through gambling activities.
Reacting to the development, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the university expressed deep sorrow over the loss. In a statement signed by the SUG General Secretary, Comrade Aliyu Abubakar, the union extended condolences to Danlami’s family, friends, and the entire university community.
The SUG described his death as a painful and irreparable loss, not only to his immediate family but also to the Department of Computer Science and the institution at large.
“On behalf of the entire student community of IBB University, Lapai, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, friends, the Department of Computer Science, and all students of the university over this great and painful loss,” the statement read.
The union also prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family and colleagues during the period of mourning.
The incident has renewed concerns within the university community about the growing impact of gambling on students, with calls for increased awareness, counselling, and support services to help address addiction-related challenges on campus.
