UCL: Bodø/Glimt shock Man City 3–1 in Champions League clash

0

FK Bodø/Glimt stunned Manchester City with a commanding 3–1 victory in their UEFA Champions League encounter on Tuesday.

The Norwegian hosts took control early, with Kasper Høgh netting a first-half brace to put City under pressure before the break. Jens Petter Hauge sealed the win in the second half with a third goal that left the visitors chasing the game.

Despite dominating possession, Pep Guardiola’s side struggled to break down Bodø/Glimt’s defence and only managed a response in the 60th minute through Rayan Cherki.

The defeat compounds Manchester City’s recent struggles, marking their second loss in a row following a heavy defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League derby.

NCC to expand Nigeria’s spectrum capacity, boost revenue, service quality

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reiterated its commitment to expanding spectrum capacity to attract more investment, drive innovation, and improve the quality of telecommunications services across the country.

The Commission’s Head of Spectrum Administration, Atiku Lawal, stated this while speaking with journalists shortly after the conclusion of a two-day Consultative Forum with Stakeholders at the Digital Economy Complex, Mbora, Abuja, on the opening of the Spectrum Roadmap 2025–2030.

Lawal explained that the Commission’s focus is on increasing spectrum resources to support growing demand and enable better user experience. According to him, higher spectrum capacity would translate into improved quality of service for subscribers and open up new opportunities for innovation.

“What we are trying to do is to increase the spectrum resource capacities so that more investments and activities will come on board. If we attain high capacity, you have a better experience and better quality of service,” he said.

He noted that the opening of additional spectrum bands goes beyond improving connectivity, stressing that modern telecommunications now support critical services such as digital banking, e-commerce and other business activities.

“We are opening the bands not only to improve the quality of service but also to allow for innovations. It is not only about connection. People are making bank transactions, doing business, and engaging in many activities beyond just calling their relatives,” Lawal said.

He added that improved spectrum availability would enhance productivity across sectors, including healthcare, by enabling remote consultations and digital health services.

“We have doctors in remote places, and they should be able to connect from their villages to the National Hospital in Abuja to speak with consultants without those consultants having to travel. However, this cannot happen without spectrum,” he explained.

Lawal emphasized that the consultative forum was aimed at ensuring that more spectrum is made available to the telecommunications industry to support national development goals under the Digital Economy agenda.

Nigerian Newssphere recalls that the NCC generated about $500 million from the 5G spectrum auction conducted in 2022. The Commission disclosed that MTN Nigeria and Mafab Communications paid a combined sum of $273 million for licenses in the 3.5 GHz spectrum band.

He followed up with a more extended response on X, where he wrote:

IPOB stages Trump solidarity rallies in South-East, calls for Nnamdi Kanu’s release

0

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Tuesday held rallies across parts of the South-East to express solidarity with former United States President, Donald Trump, while renewing calls for the release of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The rallies, tagged “Trump Solidarity Rally,” took place simultaneously in Abia, Anambra and Ebonyi states.

DAILY POST recalls that IPOB had organised similar rallies in support of Trump during his first term as US President. In 2017, some IPOB members were reportedly killed during a confrontation with soldiers at a Trump solidarity rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The latest demonstrations come amid claims by the Nigerian government that IPOB supporters are responsible for promoting the narrative of alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, a development said to have influenced the designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern by the United States during Trump’s administration.

The narrative had also been linked to US airstrikes on Christmas Day against terrorist enclaves in North-West Nigeria, following threats of military action by Trump over alleged killings of Christians.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, said the rallies were peaceful and partly held in remembrance of those killed during the 2017 Port Harcourt incident.

According to the statement, youths, women and elders participated in large numbers, carrying placards, banners and photographs of Nnamdi Kanu, while demanding his immediate and unconditional release.

Powerful said participants insisted that Kanu’s continued detention remains a major source of tension and instability in the South-East. They also called for an independent investigation into the 2017 Port Harcourt killings and the worsening insecurity in the region.

IPOB reiterated that all its activities are peaceful and lawful, urging security agencies to respect citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly. The group also appealed to the international community to pay attention to what it described as the deteriorating human rights situation in the South-East.

Nnamdi Kanu is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted on terrorism-related charges by the Nigerian government, a verdict IPOB and his legal team have described as unlawful.

UK targets Social Media ban

The United Kingdom is considering banning children under the age of 16 from using social media and raising the digital age of consent to curb the use of children’s data without proper authorisation.

Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, Liz Kendall, disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing lawmakers at the House of Commons in London.

Kendall said the government is closely studying Australia’s approach, which introduced a landmark ban on social media use for under-16s in December 2025.

The Australian policy restricts children from creating or maintaining accounts on platforms such as Meta-owned Facebook, Instagram and Threads, as well as TikTok, YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, Snapchat and Twitch.

The move was aimed at safeguarding young people’s mental health and protecting them from harmful online environments. Under the policy, technology companies that fail to comply with strict age verification and access control measures face fines of up to $32 million.

As part of plans to adopt a similar framework, the UK government intends to consult widely with parents, experts, organisations representing children and bereaved families, technology firms, as well as children and young adults.

According to Kendall, the consultation will examine issues such as overnight social media curfews, excessive screen time and doomscrolling, stricter enforcement of existing age-verification laws, and the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass online protections.

“We will also be developing evidence-based screen time guidance for parents of children aged five to 16,” Kendall told the lower chamber of parliament.

She added that the government is ready to address growing concerns from parents, teachers, doctors and other stakeholders about children’s screen use both at home and in schools.

Last week, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson announced that screen time guidance for children under the age of five is being developed and will be released in April 2026.

Meanwhile, the UK government has issued updated guidance on the use of mobile phones in schools, with the education watchdog, Ofsted, mandated to monitor compliance during inspections.

In addition, the government has made intimate image abuse and cyberflashing priority offences, while also criminalising the use of artificial intelligence tools to generate child sexual abuse material.

AFCON: What I told Mané after Senegal Walked Off Against Morocco – Claude Le Roy

0

Former Ghana head coach, Claude Le Roy, has revealed details of his conversation with Sadio Mané after Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch during their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final clash against Morocco on Sunday.

Le Roy, who previously coached Senegal, was seen speaking with Mané shortly after the Teranga Lions left the field in protest over a controversial penalty awarded to Morocco by referee Jacques Ndala. The incident occurred moments after Ndala disallowed a goal scored by Senegal at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

Speaking on Canal Plus, Le Roy explained that Mané approached him alone on the pitch and asked what he would have done in such a situation.

“When the Senegalese team left the pitch, Sadio Mané was alone and came to ask me what I would do if I were in his place. I told him I would continue playing,” Le Roy said.

He added that he reminded Mané the match was still undecided, advice that prompted the Senegal captain to return and convince his teammates to resume the game.

Senegal eventually went on to secure the AFCON title with a hard-fought 1–0 victory, thanks to Pape Gueye’s decisive goal in first-half extra time.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, has disclosed that the Federal Government’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program has trained more than 135,000 Nigerians during its pilot phase.

In a statement shared on his X account on Tuesday, Tijani said the programme recorded significant progress across three cohorts, while community learning resources extended digital skills training to over 300,000 additional learners nationwide.

According to the minister, the initiative has also contributed to the creation of about 15,000 jobs and opportunity pathways, strengthening Nigeria’s growing digital talent ecosystem.

He further revealed that more than 1.8 million Nigerians are currently in the 3MTT pipeline as the program works toward its broader goal of equipping three million citizens with in-demand digital skills.

As the program transitions into its scale-up phase, Tijani said the focus will be on deepening impact by strengthening the alumni community, expanding access to opportunities, and ensuring that acquired skills translate into tangible outcomes.

He added that the ministry is inviting feedback from fellows and partners through the #3MTTImpactChallenge and the 3MTT National Impact Reflection to better understand how the initiative has influenced participants’ professional journeys so far.

Massive Protests will erupt in 5  Nigerian states— Primate Ayodele warns Tinubu

0

The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over an impending wave of protests he says could destabilize the current administration.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Primate Ayodele warned that the protests would begin quietly in five states before escalating into a nationwide movement if not promptly addressed.

According to the cleric, the demonstrations are part of a broader strategy aimed at unseating the president and could have severe consequences for the nation’s economy. He urged the federal government to treat the warning seriously and act proactively.

“It’s going to be a massive protest, and it will start with five states,” Ayodele said. “This is part of the strategies to remove the president if he is not careful. The protest could shut down the economy, so it must not be taken for granted.”

The prophet further advised President Tinubu to pay close attention to security intelligence, particularly reports from the Department of State Services (DSS), noting that early warning signs would precede the protests.

He also alleged that some former leaders are working behind the scenes to destabilize the current government.

“The protest will begin gradually, and the government may not take it seriously at first,” he added. “That is why the president must listen to security agencies, especially the DSS. Some former heads of government are plotting against this administration to weaken it.”

GCON for Chagoury: Replace VP with him, rename Abuja- Mahdi Shehu mocks Tinubu

0

Public affairs analyst, Mahdi Shehu, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the conferment of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on businessman Gilbert Chagoury, describing the decision as controversial and inappropriate.

Reacting in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Shehu lampooned the Tinubu administration, sarcastically suggesting that Chagoury should be appointed as vice president in place of Kashim Shettima.

He further mocked the development by proposing that the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, be renamed after Chagoury, while Nigeria itself should be renamed Lebanon.

“Beyond the so-called ‘French gift’ of GCON, Tinubu should appoint Chagoury his vice president and drop Kashim Shettima. He should also rename Abuja as Chagoury enclave and change the name of Nigeria to Lebanon so that the capture circle will be complete and slavery reintroduced,” Shehu wrote.

DAILY POST reports that news of Chagoury’s national honour became public on Monday after billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola, congratulated him.

The award has since sparked widespread reactions and criticism across the country. A former spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, also condemned the honour, alleging that it reflects a system where corruption is being celebrated in Nigeria.

AFCON: They’ve two best players in Africa—Yaya Touré reveals most impressive Team

0

Former Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Touré has described Nigeria’s Super Eagles as the most impressive team at the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), praising their attacking quality and overall performance at the tournament.

Nigeria enjoyed an outstanding campaign, scoring 14 goals and conceding just four throughout the competition. The Super Eagles were particularly solid in the knockout stages, where they did not concede a single goal.

Touré also commended Morocco’s head coach, Walid Regragui, for his tactical approach, noting that the North African side was disciplined and effective on the counterattack.

“I’ve been really impressed with the team Walid Regragui is coaching. He is very practical and straightforward, with a strong focus on counterattacks,” Touré said.

However, the former Barcelona star maintained that Nigeria stood out above the rest, stressing that the Super Eagles boast the two best players in African football.

“I was really impressed with Nigeria. They play good football, and when you look at the statistics, they scored more goals than usual,” he added.

“It felt like a full attacking team, playing really attractive football. What impressed me most was the way Nigeria played and the number of goals they scored. They won games because they had the two top African players in their squad.”

Touré noted that despite their strong performances, the Super Eagles were eliminated by Morocco in the semi-finals.

Nigeria went on to claim the bronze medal, defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties after the third-place playoff ended in a draw at regulation time.
