AFCON 2025 Final: Regragui explains Diaz’s missed penalty against Senegal

0

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has explained why Brahim Diaz failed to convert a late penalty in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Senegal, saying the Real Madrid forward was unsettled by events leading up to the kick.

Diaz had the opportunity to secure victory for the hosts with the final action of the match. However, after a prolonged 17-minute stoppage caused by protests, the attacker attempted a weak panenka that was comfortably saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The missed penalty sparked speculation that the controversy surrounding the decision may have affected Diaz’s composure.

Addressing the issue after the match, Regragui said the long delay before the kick disrupted the player’s focus.

“He had a lot of time before taking the penalty, which must have disturbed him,” the coach told reporters. “But we can’t change what happened. That is how he chose to take the penalty. We need to look forward now.”

AFCON 2025 Final: CAF begins probe into Morocco vs Senegal controversial clash

0

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into the conduct of players and officials during Sunday’s dramatic 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat.

The highly charged encounter descended into chaos late in the game following two controversial refereeing decisions that went against Senegal. An apparent goal by Ismaila Sarr was disallowed, moments before the hosts, Morocco, were awarded a penalty. However, Brahim Diaz failed to convert the spot kick.

The decisions sparked angry reactions from Senegal supporters in the stands, while tensions spilled onto the pitch as players and coaching staff from both sides became involved in heated exchanges.

In the midst of the unrest, Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw instructed his players to leave the field in protest, before team captain Sadio Mané intervened and persuaded them to return to play.

Reacting to the incident, CAF issued a strongly worded statement condemning the behaviour witnessed during the final.

“The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) condemns the unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat,” the statement read.

CAF added that it strongly opposes any form of inappropriate conduct during matches, particularly actions directed at match officials or organisers.

The football body confirmed it is currently reviewing all available footage from the game and will forward its findings to the appropriate disciplinary bodies for necessary action against those found culpable.

Outcry in Enugu as Nsukka LG Chair allegedly forces workers to join APC

0

A wave of controversy has hit Enugu State following allegations that the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Hon. Engr. Jude Asogwa, directed council workers to compulsorily register with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The allegation was raised on Monday by a social media influencer, Sen. Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, who made the claim in a Facebook post. Ugwuanyi described the alleged directive as a violation of workers’ rights and freedom of conscience.

According to him, both teaching and non-teaching staff in Nsukka LGA were instructed to report to Adada Hall for APC electronic registration. The workers were reportedly asked to present their National Identification Number (NIN), voters’ cards, and bank account details.

Ugwuanyi alleged that the exercise was declared mandatory, with implied threats of intimidation, victimization, and possible job loss for workers who failed to comply.

He also shared a message said to have been circulated to head teachers, stating that all teaching and non-teaching staff across Nsukka Local Government and its development centers must attend the registration by 9 a.m. The message further directed schools to arrange staff attendance in batches to ensure pupils were not left unsupervised.

Condemning the alleged order, Ugwuanyi argued that no government has the legal or moral right to compel civil servants to join a political party as a condition for retaining their employment. He warned that political affiliation should be based on personal conviction, not fear or coercion, adding that the move could be linked to efforts to boost party membership ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Newssphere spoke with some primary school teachers under the local government who confirmed that the directive was circulated.

One of the teachers, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimization, said preparations were already underway to attend the exercise.

“Yes, it’s true. My head teacher has already informed us to ensure we go. The information is also on our WhatsApp platform,” she said.

As of the time of filing this report, the Chairman of the Nsukka Local Government Area had not publicly reacted to the allegations.

Negotiating with bandits terrorism financing- Adeyanju slams Nigerian govt

0

Human rights activist and convener of Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, has condemned the Federal Government’s continued negotiation, pardon, and alleged appeasement of bandits and terrorists, warning that such actions endanger Nigeria’s national security.

In a statement issued on Monday, Adeyanju said the government’s approach amounts to indirect financing of terrorism, insisting that armed groups involved in terrorism and banditry are criminals who should be dealt with through the justice system, not dialogue or forgiveness.

He argued that terrorists do not repent and that banditry is not a misunderstanding that can be resolved at negotiation tables. According to him, those involved in violent crimes should be arrested, prosecuted, and imprisoned, rather than being hosted by government officials or rewarded with concessions.

Adeyanju described the practice of forgiving terrorists as strange to any serious state, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent. He said it sends the wrong signal that taking up arms, killing citizens, and destabilizing the country can lead to rewards.

He cautioned that such policies could encourage more criminality, as others may be emboldened to resort to violence in the belief that the government would eventually negotiate with, compensate, or pardon them.

Drawing a comparison, Adeyanju noted that some of the terrorists being engaged by the government have committed crimes far more severe than those attributed to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He pointed out that while Kanu faces allegations of incitement, he has not been accused of personally killing anyone, unlike terrorists who have allegedly killed thousands of Nigerians.

Adeyanju warned that embracing such criminals undermines justice and poses a long-term threat to the foundation of Nigeria’s national security.

Gold refinery in Lagos owned by private company—Nigerian govt

President Tinbu

The Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has dismissed claims by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) that the Federal Government sited a gold refinery in Lagos in violation of the federal character principle.

It said the allegations contained in a statement signed by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) spokesperson, Prof. Abubakar Jiddere, were not true and misleading.

In a statement on Sunday in Abuja, Mr. Segun Tomori, Special Assistant to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, said the minister had not made any such announcement.

“There was nowhere in the Minister of Solid Minerals’ announcement that the Federal Government owned or established a gold refinery in Lagos or anywhere for that matter.

“Dr. Dele Alake was very clear, concise, and emphatic in the announcement of the proposed inauguration of the refinery, that other gold refineries are in the works across the country and all privately owned by different companies,” he said.

Tomori said the newly established gold refinery was an initiative of Kian Smith, a fully privately owned mining company, aimed at developing the local gold industry through innovative practices.

He explained that the Federal Government does not compel private companies to locate their operations in any particular part of the federation, as each firm has its own operational and marketing strategy to ensure profitability.

He said the Federal Government acknowledged the doggedness of the company’s founder and Managing Director, Ms. Nere Emiko, for delivering a flagship project after years of perseverance, enterprise, and leadership.

According to him, the refinery reflects the solid minerals sector’s response to the value-addition policy introduced to discourage the export of raw minerals and to promote local processing and manufacturing.

Tomori said the policy had stimulated the conversion of raw mineral exports into processing factories across the country, generating massive inflows of foreign capital and providing thousands of jobs for Nigerians.

He said this included the 600 million dollar lithium plant in Nasarawa State, the 400 million dollar rare earth plant also in Nasarawa State, and the 200 million dollar ASBA lithium plant in Abuja.

Tomori said the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, through its policy reforms, had been creating an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive and flourish in the mining sector over the past two years.

He said the Lagos gold refinery and similar projects were clear evidence of the effectiveness of reforms in the solid minerals sector.

“The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development shall continue to encourage more mining companies to set up processing and manufacturing plants across the country.

“We urge NEF to turn a new leaf and join the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to build a stronger, self-reliant economy that meets the needs of the Nigerian people,” he said.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the crash occurred around 3:15 p.m. and involved a fully loaded articulated truck that overturned and collided with several vehicles.

2027: My re-election unstoppable- Otti tells Orji Kalu, Others

0

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has declared that his re-election in 2027 is inevitable, insisting that no individual or group can stop it.

Otti made the assertion on Saturday while speaking at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Umuikaa District Headquarters, in the Isialangwa South Local Government Area of the state.

Despite his confidence about 2027, the governor warned that his administration would not be distracted by early election politics, stressing that his focus remains on delivering development to the people of Abia State.

“I am not bothered about 2027. The same God who settled 2023 will also settle 2027,” Otti said.

He further pledged that his government would continue to do the right thing, regardless of attacks from the opposition.

“No one, or group of people, whoever they are, is entitled to distract us. When they make noise, we should not be bothered. We should just remain focused and do what we have to do,” the governor added.

Otti’s comments come amid ongoing verbal exchanges between him and former Abia State governors—Orji Uzor Kalu, Theodore Orji, and Okezie Ikpeazu. In recent weeks, Senator Kalu had vowed to stop Otti’s re-election bid in 2027.

AFCON Final: Why I called my teammates nack to pitch—Sadio Mané explains

0

Senegal star forward Sadio Mané has explained why he urged his teammates to return to the pitch during the tense closing moments of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco on Sunday night.

Senegal edged the host nation 1-0 after 120 minutes to clinch their second AFCON title, with Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal in the first half of extra time.

The dramatic final was briefly halted late in the second half when the referee awarded Morocco a penalty for a foul on Brahim Díaz. The decision angered the Senegalese players, who momentarily walked off the pitch in protest.

However, cameras later showed Mané appealing to his teammates to resume the match.

Speaking after the game, the former Liverpool forward said he believed walking off would have sent the wrong message to football fans around the world.

“When my teammates decided to leave the pitch, I stayed and asked some people if it was a good idea or not,” Mané said in his post-match interview.

“I then decided to go and bring everyone back. I felt it was the best thing to do. This is football—referees can make mistakes, and that’s part of the game.

“People around the world can judge whether it was a penalty or not, but that wasn’t the most important thing. What matters is that millions were watching, and it wouldn’t have been fair to stop a match like this.”

Mané’s intervention ensured the final was completed, allowing Senegal to secure a historic AFCON triumph.
