Tinubu ends controversy, constitutes board of NERC with Oseni as chairman

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has put an end to the controversy surrounding the leadership of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.

This comes as President Tinubu approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) following the confirmation of its members by the Senate on December 16.

In a statement on Thursday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, under the new arrangement, Dr. Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni has been appointed Chairman of the Commission. Dr. Oseni, who joined NERC as a Commissioner in January 2017 and later served as Vice Chairman.

Oseni assumed office as chairman on December 1, 2025. His tenure will run until the completion of his statutory 10-year term, in line with the Electricity Act, 2023.

Dr. Yusuf Ali was named Vice Chairman. He was first appointed as a commissioner in February 2022, and his designation as vice chairman took effect on December 1, 2025, lasting until the end of his first term.

Other members of the reconstituted board include Mr. Nathan Rogers Shatti and Mr. Dafe Akpeneye, both serving second terms after their initial appointments in January 2017; Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello, also in her second term after her first appointment in December 2020; and Dr. Chidi Ike, who is serving his first term following his appointment in February 2022.

Dr. Fouad Animashaun joins the board as a commissioner for his first term, effective December 2025. An energy economist, Dr. Animashaun brings extensive experience from the Nigerian power sector and most recently served as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

President Tinubu has charged the new NERC board to deepen and consolidate ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector, in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2023.
