Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, has taken the oath of allegiance and oath of office, marking the commencement of his second term in office.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Tuesday at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, drawing a large crowd of dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond.

Soludo arrived at the venue at about 11:18 a.m. alongside top government officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima. Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan were also in attendance.

Other notable figures present included elder statesman Emeka Anyaoku and the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

The governor took the oath of allegiance at about 11:50 a.m., followed by the oath of office shortly after. He signed the official documents at 11:55 a.m. in the presence of the state Chief Judge, drawing applause from attendees.

Soludo was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, who stood beside him throughout the ceremony.

The inauguration signals the start of a new four-year term, expected to run until 2030.

Maiguduri bombings: Presidency speaks on alleged Trump tweet criticizing Tinubu

0

The presidency of Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dismissed as false a viral social media post alleging that former United States President Donald Trump criticized Nigeria’s handling of its security challenges.

The post, which began trending early Tuesday, claimed Trump described the situation in Nigeria as a “total disaster” and faulted Tinubu for embarking on a state visit to the United Kingdom amid reports of attacks, including suicide bombings in Maiduguri.

It further urged immediate action to protect citizens and tighten border controls, suggesting that the Nigerian leader was neglecting his responsibilities.

Reacting, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, described the claim as entirely false and misleading.

“This post does not exist on any whitehouse.gov platform or any of President Donald Trump’s social media pages. Verify before you post,” he said.

The Presidency also cautioned the public against spreading unverified information, stressing the importance of fact-checking content before sharing on social media

Naira continues appreciation against US dollar

0

The naira sustained its upward trend against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Monday, according to data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The local currency appreciated to N1,357.77 per dollar, improving from the N1,366.23 recorded at the close of trading on Friday. This represents a gain of N8.46 for the naira at the official window.

However, a different trend was observed at the parallel market, where the naira depreciated by N5 to N1,430 per dollar on Monday, compared to N1,425 per dollar at the end of last week.

DAILY POST reports that the currency began the week on a mixed note across the foreign exchange markets.

The development comes as the National Bureau of Statistics reported a slight decline in Nigeria’s headline inflation, which eased to 15.06 percent in February.

In addition, recent data from the apex bank showed that the country’s foreign reserves increased to $50.027 billion last week, signaling improved external liquidity.

Iran: Europe rejects Trump’s call for naval deployment in Hormuz amid crude price hike

0

European leaders have rejected a request by Donald Trump for allied support to secure the Strait of Hormuz, as foreign ministers from the European Union convened in Brussels to discuss rising oil prices linked to the ongoing US-Israel tensions with Iran.

The response came after Trump urged countries, including the United Kingdom, China, France, Japan, South Korea, and other members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, to deploy naval forces to protect the critical shipping route. He warned that failure to act could have consequences for the future of the alliance.

Although US officials have been seeking to build a multinational coalition to safeguard the strait, specifics regarding its structure and timeline remain unclear. Several European nations, however, have expressed reluctance to commit military resources amid the escalating conflict.

During the Brussels meeting, EU foreign ministers called on Washington to provide clearer details about its objectives and the expected timeline for resolving the crisis before any commitments are made.

Germany’s Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, said Berlin had no intention of joining military operations, stressing the need for transparency.

“We expect the US and Israel to inform us, to include us in what they’re doing there, and to tell us if these goals are achieved.

“Once we have a clear picture of that, we believe we need to move into the next phase, namely, defining a security architecture for this entire region, together with the neighboring states,” he said.

Wadephul added that NATO had not taken any decision regarding possible involvement in securing the waterway.

Backing that stance, German government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said the conflict falls outside NATO’s mandate.

“It is not NATO’s war. NATO is an alliance to defend the alliance area,” he stated, adding that the United States did not consult allies before launching its current military actions.

Germany’s Defence Minister, Boris Pistorius, also questioned the proposal.

“What does … Trump expect a handful or two handfuls of European frigates to do in the Strait of Hormuz that the powerful US Navy cannot do? This is not our war. We have not started it,” he said.

Other European officials voiced similar concerns. Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said Athens would not participate in any deployment, while Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, noted that Rome was not engaged in naval operations that could be extended to the region.

Estonia’s Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, said European allies were still awaiting clarity on Washington’s broader strategy.

“What will be the plan?” he asked.

Similarly, Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radek Sikorski, urged the US to follow established diplomatic processes.

“If there is a request via NATO, we will, of course, out of respect and sympathy for our American allies, consider it very carefully,” he said.

Disturbing resurgence of terrorism—Kwankwaso reacts as Borno bombing claims 23 lives

0

The 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has expressed sorrow over the multiple suicide bombings that rocked Maiduguri, Borno State.

The attacks, linked to suspected Boko Haram insurgents, occurred on Monday evening, leaving at least 23 people dead and over 100 others injured.

Reacting in a statement on Tuesday, Kwankwaso said he was “deeply saddened” by the tragic development, describing it as a sign of renewed insecurity.

According to him, the incident “signals a disturbing resurgence of senseless terrorism that threatens the peace our communities have struggled so hard to rebuild after years of relative calm. This cannot be tolerated.”

He stressed the need for urgent and decisive action, noting that “this is not the time for defensiveness or complacency. Our gallant armed forces must be fully empowered to take decisive, proactive action against these enemies of Nigeria.”

Kwankwaso further urged both federal and state governments to strengthen support for security agencies, saying, “The Federal and State governments must leave no stone unturned in providing all necessary resources and support to enable our troops to decisively defeat these terrorist networks.”

He also extended sympathy to those affected by the attacks, stating, “My heart goes out to the bereaved families, the injured, and all the people of Borno State. I extend my deepest condolences to the government and the citizens of Borno during this difficult time.”

BREAKING: ICPC forcing me to quit politics as condition for release—El-Rufai

0

The embattled former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has alleged that officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) attempted to force him to abandon political activities as a condition for his release from detention.

The allegation is contained in a 30-page criminal complaint filed by El-Rufai before a court against the ICPC chairman, Musa Adamu Aliyu, and four other officials of the anti-corruption agency.

According to the filing, the former governor claimed that during his detention, officers of the commission told him he would only be freed if he stopped taking part in politics.

The claim is outlined in Paragraph 12 of the complaint, where El-Rufai alleged that ICPC operatives, reportedly acting on the authority of the commission’s chairman, informed him that his release depended on his agreement to cease all political involvement.

He argued that the demand amounted to an attempt to force him to relinquish his constitutional rights.

Further details were provided in the affidavit supporting the complaint, particularly in Paragraphs 22 to 24, where his counsel stated that El-Rufai was repeatedly warned that continued political activity could extend his detention and that pledging to withdraw from politics was the only way to regain his freedom.

The allegation forms the basis of Count Six in the complaint, which accuses the officials of wrongful confinement with intent to compel, an offense cited under Sections 264 and 267 of the Penal Code.

El-Rufai is urging the court to scrutinize the conduct of the ICPC officials, arguing that the alleged actions constitute an abuse of office and an unlawful attempt to limit his participation in the political process.

The ICPC has yet to publicly respond to the allegations contained in the court filing.

An explosion occurred in Maiduguri on Monday evening, targeting the Monday Market and the entrance gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) shortly after the breaking of fast (iftar) at about 7:20 p.m.

The incident was confirmed by the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Kenneth Daso, in a post on his X handle.

According to him, security operatives and emergency responders were immediately deployed to the affected locations.

“Following reports of a suspected explosion at Maiduguri Monday Market and UMTH gate at about 7:20 PM, joint security operatives and emergency responders have been deployed. The Police EOD Unit, Base 13 Maiduguri, is on the ground,” he said.

Daso urged residents to remain calm and stay away from the affected areas while authorities carry out further assessments.

EPL slams Chelsea with heavy fine, transfer ban

0

Chelsea F.C. has been fined £10.75 million by the Premier League and handed a one-window transfer ban, which has been suspended for two years, following historical regulatory breaches during the ownership of Roman Abramovich.

The sanction was confirmed in a detailed statement published on the league’s official website on Monday.

The development follows Chelsea’s decision to voluntarily disclose potential violations of league regulations.

The west London club was subsequently charged by the Football Association in September last year.

An independent commission later determined that the club had breached rules related to financial reporting, third-party investments, and youth development.

Chelsea was acquired in 2022 by the BlueCo consortium led by Todd Boehly, ending Abramovich’s long-standing ownership of the club.

BREAKING: Tinubu swears in Taiwo Oyedele as Nigeria’s Minister of State for Finance

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday formally inaugurated Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of State for Finance.

The swearing-in ceremony was held briefly at the State House.

Oyedele succeeds Doris Anite-Uzoka, who has been reassigned as Minister of State in the Ministry of Budget and National Planning. The latest redeployment marks her third ministerial portfolio under the current administration.

Nigerian Newssphere earlier reported that the Senate confirmed Oyedele’s nomination on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, barely 24 hours after President Tinubu transmitted a request for his screening to the lawmakers.

Before his appointment, Oyedele served as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he spearheaded efforts aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s tax framework.

2027: Leave the ranks of forces of darkness— Fani-Kayode tells Dele Momodu

0

Nigeria’s ambassador designate to Germany and former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has publicly responded to remarks made by media personality and politician Dele Momodu after Momodu compared President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with former military ruler Sani Abacha during a television interview.

In a lengthy Facebook post, Fani-Kayode said Momodu’s comments reflected what he described as “a degenerating and worrisome level of cognitive dissonance,” expressing concern about the tone of the publisher’s recent political remarks.

He also criticized Momodu’s appearance during the interview with Channels Television presenter Seun Okinbaloye, saying he “sounded drained, tired, and broken and spoke little sense.”

Fani-Kayode advised Momodu to take a break from political commentary, urging him to “get his breath back and attempt to overhaul his intellectual engine.” He argued that Momodu’s criticisms of the president and other government officials were not constructive.

The former minister also targeted the opposition African Democratic Congress, stating that the party was not adequately prepared for serious political contests.

According to him, the ADC was like “a badly patched-up inflatable plastic lifeboat that has not even managed to find its bearing or leave the harbor,” adding that it lacked “engine, sails, oars… navigational equipment… firepower… [and] a war chest.”

He further stated that the party “needs to be built up, better schooled, better trained, better equipped, better educated, and better prepared before it can enter the field and… be regarded as an opposition party.”

Fani-Kayode also defended the ruling All Progressives Congress and President Tinubu’s administration, writing, “To be sure Tinubu started well, he is doing well & he will, by the grace of God, end well with no regrets in 2031.”

In a personal appeal to Momodu, he urged him to reconsider his political stance and “leave the ranks of the forces of darkness and join us.” He also criticized Momodu’s association with the ADC, saying it was like “a gentle, beautiful… flamingo trapped in a sea of ugly… cackling & relentless crows & vultures.”
