Why UK should allow Ekweremadu to return to Nigeria – Shehu Sani

0

Shehu Sani, a former senator from Kaduna Central, has urged the United Kingdom to grant the Federal Government’s request for the repatriation of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu to Nigeria.

Senator Shehu Sani, in a statement on X Monday, said the UK should “accede to the request of the FG and allow Senator Ekweremadu to return home and complete his term,” stressing that the long-standing historical and diplomatic relationship between both nations should guide the decision.

He argued that cooperation on the matter would strengthen bilateral trust, noting that “one day, the UK may also request such favours from Nigeria.”

The appeal comes amid renewed calls by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to the UK government to transfer Ekweremadu’s case to Nigerian authorities, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence or undergo legal processes at home.

However, the UK rejected Nigeria’s after the federal government sent a high-powered delegation on the matter.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Ekweremadu is serving a nine-year jail term in a UK facility after he was convicted in 2023 of plotting to harvest the kidney of a young man for his daughter.

Court Halts Ex-Gov Obiano’s N4bn Corruption Trial Indefinitely after Death Rumour

0

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned indefinitely the N4 billion corruption trial of former Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Maduabuchi Obiano.

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar issued the order on Tuesday following a request by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is prosecuting the former governor on behalf of the Federal Government.

Obiano was absent from court, and no explanation was provided regarding his whereabouts.

When the case was called, EFCC counsel Simon Obila—holding brief for Sylvanus Tahir, SAN—told the court that the matter was appearing before Justice Umar for the first time. He explained that the trial began nearly two years ago before Justice Inyang Ekwo, where the commission had already called nine witnesses.

Obila argued that restarting the case before a new judge would pose significant setbacks for the prosecution. He added that the EFCC had written to the Chief Judge, Justice John Tsoho, requesting an indefinite adjournment pending Justice Ekwo’s return to continue with the matter.

He therefore urged the court to grant the request.

Counsel to Obiano, Dr Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, did not oppose the application, agreeing that the EFCC would face setbacks if compelled to begin the trial afresh.

Justice Umar subsequently adjourned the case sine die.

This comes days after his death rumours surfaced but were debunked

BREAKING: Again Bandits raid Kwara Community, abducted pregnant woman, children, others

0

Again, armed bandits on Monday stormed the Isapa community in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, abducting a pregnant woman, 10 children, two nursing mothers and several other residents.

According to a local Neewspaper between 20 and 30 gunmen invaded the community, moving with a large herd of cattle while shooting sporadically. A stray bullet was said to have hit an elderly woman during the attack.

A community leader confirmed that 11 people were kidnapped, including seven members of one family. Those abducted were identified as Talatu Kabiru, Magaji, Kande, Hadiza, Mariam, Saima, Habibat (a housewife), Fatima Yusufu (a housewife), Sarah Sunday (pregnant woman), Lami Fidelis (a nursing mother), and Haja Na Allah.

The attackers reportedly fled through bush paths linking Eruku to neighbouring settlements, leaving residents terrified.

The incident comes barely two weeks after bandits attacked the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), abducting 38 worshippers while some others were killed. All 38 abducted victims from that attack have since been rescued.

Life imprisonment: Sending Nnamdi Kanu to Sokoto will affect his right to appeal – Ejimakor

Nnamdi Kanu

Consultant and former counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Aloy Ejimakor, has said that sending the Biafra agitator to Sokoto State to serve his jail term is an impediment to prosecuting his appeal.

Recall that barely a week ago Justice James Omotosho of the Abuja Federal High Court had sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment and ordered him to serve his jail term in the Sokoto Custodial Service centre.

However, Ejimakor said moving Kanu to Sokoto would affect his move to appeal the judgement.

In a recent interview with Channels Television, Ejimakor said Kanu has the right to a fair hearing, which would be expressed before the Court of Appeal.

He said, “Right now what everybody should be concerned with is the post-judgement regime. Nnamdi Kanu still retains his constitutional right to a fair hearing under section 36 of the Constitution, which is going to be expressed before the Court of Appeal.

“Or perhaps there could be some post-judgement manoeuvres that could be made before the High Court.

“But for now, it is known, well known to the whole world, and to the court, the High Court, and to everybody else who is a stakeholder in this case that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has no legal counsel. So as I speak, he still represents himself.

“But see, after the sentencing, I was surprised like everybody else who was monitoring this case was surprised that he was plucked from Abuja and taken all the way to Sokoto, which is in the northernmost part of north-west Nigeria.

“So you begin to ask, how can he effectively take and prosecute his appeal or even take the initial steps towards initiating his appeal? Initiating an appeal is not an easy thing to do.

“He has to file a notice of appeal, request for the transcripts of the record of proceedings before the High Court, pay for them, review them, and do all sorts of things, all sorts of activities that will now play out before the Court of Appeal.

“And these things require his personal physical presence to get these things accomplished, unless he hires a lawyer.

“And up to this point, he hasn’t indicated that he’s going to hire any lawyer, or he has not made known to anybody that he has hired any lawyer. So you begin to wonder whether he will be able to prosecute this appeal from his prison location in Sokoto.”

UCL: Frank predicts Chelsea vs Barcelona scoreline

0

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has tipped the Blues to claim a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in their UEFA Champions League showdown at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

Chelsea head into the clash on the back of a weekend Premier League win over Burnley, while Barcelona arrive buoyed by a commanding 4-0 LaLiga triumph against Athletic Club at Camp Nou.

Despite Barcelona’s strong form, Leboeuf believes Enzo Maresca’s men have the edge at home. Speaking to OLBG, the Frenchman predicted a 2-1 win for Chelsea and criticised the defensive approach of Barça manager Hansi Flick.

“Being positive, 2-1 to Chelsea,” Leboeuf said. “I see Barcelona playing a high line and that is insane. I don’t understand Hansi Flick and the way he plays. As a defender, I would refuse to play like that—put me on the bench; I don’t want to look like a fool.”

‘I’ll vote for Trump 100 million times to invade Nigeria’ – Buba Galadima mocks Tinubu

0

A chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, says he would support former U.S. President Donald Trump if his intervention could help tackle Nigeria’s deepening insecurity.

Galadima made the remark on Monday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time, while reacting to threats from the Trump administration to deploy American troops to Nigeria over allegations of “Christian genocide.”

When asked if he would endorse Trump’s deployment of troops to troubled Nigerian communities, Galadima said he would back the move strictly to restore security, not for any religious agenda.

He described Trump as a shrewd businessman who often applies pressure on foreign governments to secure strategic and economic advantages, rather than out of concern for Christians or Muslims.

According to him, Trump has a history of leveraging influence over nations like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to gain financial benefits, adding that Nigeria could navigate a similar dynamic if President Bola Tinubu engages Washington skillfully.

“Not for the purposes he (Trump) is talking about. But to come and secure Nigeria, I will vote for Trump 100 million times,” Galadima said.

“Trump himself—I don’t believe he’s here to protect Christians or Muslims. He wants to put pressure on the Nigerian government so he can extract as much as possible, because he believes France and China are milking Nigeria dry.

“He’s not talking for you or me. Look at what he did—put pressure on Saudi Arabia, put pressure on Kuwait, and got trillions of dollars.

“The man is a businessman. He can change if they ‘see’ him well. If they talk to him well, he can ‘press’ Tinubu.”

EPL Manchester United lost 0-1 to Everton

Manchester United have been defeated 0-1 at Old Trafford by Everton in their Monday’s English Premier League fixture.

Despite Idrissa Gana Gueye red card disadvantage at the early start of the game, the Toffees outpassed the Red Devils to emerge victorious.

Dewsbury-Hall came through for Everton at the 29th minute to secure three points for his team.

Ruben Amorim, Manchester United Manager, speaking to BBC Sport after the match, said: “They were the better team with 11 players and 10. I felt we were not there with the same intensity. They deserved the win.

“The other team helped us with the sending off. We need to do [more] in every moment. If they have 10 let’s push them to the final third.

“We need to do more”.

United’s next game will be a trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Why UK rejects FG’s request for Ekweremadu’s transfer to Nigeria

0

The Tinubu administration’s recent efforts to appeal for the transfer of the former Deputy Senate President to Nigeria, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, to Nigeria, has reportedly been rejected by The United Kingdom government.

Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and a co-conspirator, Dr Obinna Obeta, were jailed in the UK for trafficking a young man to London with a view to harvesting his kidney. They planned to transplant the organ to Ekweremadu’s daughter, Sonia, in a private unit of an NHS hospital.

A source at the UK Ministry of Justice confirmed to The Guardian that the request was rejected. According to the report, the UK government is concerned about how the federal government might handle the case if the former lawmaker is transferred to Nigeria.

A government spokesperson told the newspaper that “any prisoner transfer is at our discretion following a careful assessment of whether it would be in the interests of justice.”

“The UK will not tolerate modern slavery and any offender will face the full force of UK law”, The Guardian (UK) quoted another source.

UK Cleric Donnelly tells ICC to Issue Arrest Warrant for Sheikh Gumi

0

A United Kingdom–based Catholic cleric, Rev. Nick Donnelly, has called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Nigerian Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, over what he described as extremist and dangerous public comments.

Donnelly made the demand in a statement posted on his X account on Monday, reacting to Gumi’s recent remarks dismissing claims of Christian genocide in Nigeria.

In a viral video, Gumi had argued that herdsmen involved in kidnappings should not be compared to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), insisting they abduct children “to make money.” He urged the public to “be fair with them.”

The cleric condemned the comments, alleging that Gumi openly supports groups he described as “Islamist terrorists.”

“Gumi supports ‘herdsmen’ kidnapping children to make money. The ICC needs to issue an arrest warrant on charges of crimes against humanity. Gumi needs to stand trial in The Hague,” Donnelly wrote.

His call comes as pressure mounts in Nigeria for Gumi’s prosecution, especially after IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was recently sentenced to life imprisonment by a Federal High Court over terrorism-related offences.

Reacting to Kanu’s conviction, human rights lawyer Malcolm Omirhobo said the development highlights what he called Nigeria’s “two-tiered justice system,” arguing that some individuals face swift punishment while others “who commit equal or worse offences” continue to walk free.
