The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned indefinitely the N4 billion corruption trial of former Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Maduabuchi Obiano.
Justice Mohammed Garba Umar issued the order on Tuesday following a request by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is prosecuting the former governor on behalf of the Federal Government.
Obiano was absent from court, and no explanation was provided regarding his whereabouts.
When the case was called, EFCC counsel Simon Obila—holding brief for Sylvanus Tahir, SAN—told the court that the matter was appearing before Justice Umar for the first time. He explained that the trial began nearly two years ago before Justice Inyang Ekwo, where the commission had already called nine witnesses.
Obila argued that restarting the case before a new judge would pose significant setbacks for the prosecution. He added that the EFCC had written to the Chief Judge, Justice John Tsoho, requesting an indefinite adjournment pending Justice Ekwo’s return to continue with the matter.
He therefore urged the court to grant the request.
Counsel to Obiano, Dr Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, did not oppose the application, agreeing that the EFCC would face setbacks if compelled to begin the trial afresh.
Justice Umar subsequently adjourned the case sine die.
This comes days after his death rumours surfaced but were debunked
