Why UK should allow Ekweremadu to return to Nigeria – Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani, a former senator from Kaduna Central, has urged the United Kingdom to grant the Federal Government’s request for the repatriation of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu to Nigeria.

Senator Shehu Sani, in a statement on X Monday, said the UK should “accede to the request of the FG and allow Senator Ekweremadu to return home and complete his term,” stressing that the long-standing historical and diplomatic relationship between both nations should guide the decision.

He argued that cooperation on the matter would strengthen bilateral trust, noting that “one day, the UK may also request such favours from Nigeria.”

The appeal comes amid renewed calls by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to the UK government to transfer Ekweremadu’s case to Nigerian authorities, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence or undergo legal processes at home.

However, the UK rejected Nigeria’s after the federal government sent a high-powered delegation on the matter.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Ekweremadu is serving a nine-year jail term in a UK facility after he was convicted in 2023 of plotting to harvest the kidney of a young man for his daughter.
