Atiku finally joins ADC to unseat Tinubu after six failed presidential bids

0

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signalling his renewed bid to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku, who has contested for Nigeria’s top job six times between 1993 and 2023, announced the move on Monday via his X handle, sharing a photo of himself holding the party’s membership card with the caption: “It’s official.”

His defection comes months after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, citing the party’s prolonged leadership crisis. The development now cements his involvement with the ADC, a coalition platform he previously endorsed as a unifying force for opposition figures such as Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Atiku and other opposition leaders had until now held back from formally registering with the party despite publicly supporting the coalition.

The ADC was unveiled earlier in the year as a broad-based opposition front ahead of the 2027 elections, with former Senate President David Mark emerging as National Chairman, ex-Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola appointed National Secretary, and former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi named National Publicity Secretary.

Christian Genocide: Details of deals brokered between Trump-led US, Nigeria revealed

The Nigerian government says it has reached fresh security cooperation agreements with the United States following a series of high-level engagements in Washington, D.C., aimed at addressing the country’s prolonged insecurity.

According to Nigerian Newssphere, the delegation—led by National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu—met last week with senior officials from the U.S. Congress, the White House Faith Office, the State Department, the National Security Council and the U.S. Department of War. The meetings focused heavily on allegations of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the discussions were productive and would help strengthen security ties between both nations. He noted that the dialogue opened “new avenues of cooperation” to better protect Nigerian citizens.

Onanuga explained that the delegation firmly rejected claims of genocide, stressing that violent attacks in Nigeria cut across ethnic and religious communities. He said the team warned that misrepresenting the crisis would only “divide Nigerians and distort realities on the ground.”

Following the engagements, the U.S. government reportedly expressed readiness to deepen security support for Nigeria. This includes enhanced intelligence sharing, faster processing of defence equipment requests and possible provision of excess military hardware—subject to availability—to boost counterterrorism and anti–insurgency operations.

The U.S. also signaled willingness to provide humanitarian aid to affected populations in the Middle Belt and technical assistance to strengthen early-warning and response mechanisms.

Onanuga added that both countries agreed to immediately activate a non-binding cooperation framework and create a Joint Working Group to coordinate the new areas of partnership.

He said Nigeria, in return, reaffirmed its commitment to improving civilian protection in all security operations.

EPL title race: Shearer Reveals Club “Most Likely” to hunt down Arsenal

0

Former England captain Alan Shearer has tipped Manchester City as the team “most likely” to mount a serious challenge against Arsenal in this season’s Premier League title race.

City slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United over the weekend, just 24 hours before Arsenal crushed Tottenham 4-1 in a dominant North London derby. The results widened the gap, leaving the Gunners seven points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side.

Arsenal also hold a six-point cushion over Chelsea, whom they face in a crucial clash this weekend.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer insisted that City remain the biggest threat to Mikel Arteta’s title ambitions.

“I would still say City,” he said. “We’ve seen City do it after Christmas before — they’re used to it, and they can do it, we know that.

“I know it’s different this season and, defensively, they’re certainly not as strong as they used to be. But because they’ve been there, they know what to do, they know what to expect — I would still say Manchester City.”
