In his resignation letter from the SDP dated November 26, 2025, the former governor said he was stepping aside to contribute to building a unified political platform capable of offering Nigerians a credible alternative.

“I wish to notify that I have resigned my membership of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, effective 26 November, 2025,” he stated.

Minister Tijani leads Nigeria to secure digital economy deal with Sierra Leone

Nigeria and Sierra Leone have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen collaboration in digital public infrastructure, cybersecurity, digital trade, AI development and talent growth within the sub-region.

The agreement followed a two-day Nigeria–Sierra Leone Digital Economy Bilateral Trade Mission led by Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, and hosted by Sierra Leone’s Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Salima Bah.

The mission featured government meetings, ecosystem tours and private-sector matchmaking sessions, with both countries committing to expand broadband connectivity, strengthen data governance, develop digital skills and promote cross-border technology partnerships.

Several MoUs were also signed between private companies to boost fintech, edtech, healthtech and cloud services, and expand digital services across both markets.

Dr. Tijani said the partnership reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to a harmonised and innovative regional digital economy, while Sierra Leone’s minister noted the cooperation would accelerate the country’s digital transformation.

The Nigerian delegation included leaders of NITDA, Galaxy Backbone, NCAIR and the Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation, alongside major tech firms such as IHS Towers, Flutterwave, CcHUB, Miden and others.

IGP announces 11,566 Police Personnel Withdrawn from VIPs nationwide

0

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has announced that the Nigeria Police Force has withdrawn 11,566 officers previously assigned to guard Very Important Persons (VIPs), in compliance with President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that President Tinubu had ordered the withdrawal of police operatives attached to VIPs, directing that officers be redeployed to strengthen core policing duties nationwide. The directive was issued during a security meeting held on Sunday with service chiefs, including the heads of the police, Air Force, Army, and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Under the new policy, VIPs seeking armed protection are to request personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), not the police.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, IGP Egbetokun said the presidential order has eased long-standing pressures on the police leadership.

“We have already withdrawn 11,566 personnel. We have given directives for that,” he said.

He dismissed reports on social media alleging that 120,000 police officers were assigned to private individuals, describing the claims as false and misleading.

“People are quoting figures I don’t know where they got from. How many are we in the Nigerian Police that 120,000 would be attached to private individuals? The recent presidential directive made us discover that 11,566 policemen are engaged in VIP protection,” he clarified.

Egbetokun noted that this is not the first time the police are enforcing such withdrawals. He explained that earlier directives had led to the removal of some officers from private assignments, but the presidential order now provides stronger backing to implement the policy without interference.

“With this presidential order, there will be no pressure on the IG. No governor, no minister, no friend or family member will call. Everyone knows it is a presidential directive,” he said.

He added that the redeployed personnel will be sent to areas where they are urgently needed, especially for frontline policing at a time of manpower shortages.

“We are returning to our core policing function. Deploying these 11,566 officers will help us a lot,” he said, assuring that the welfare of affected officers—particularly those sent to rural or remote areas—will be prioritized.

“The President understands the importance of their welfare, and we will not neglect it,” he added.

Earlier, popular Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore and former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani had dismissed the likelihood of the police fully implementing President Tinubu’s directive.

Arrest terrorism sponsors even if he’s my son or brother – Nigerian senator, Musa, tells Tinubu

Senator Sani Musa, representing Niger East Senatorial District, has urged president Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies to arrest anyone linked to terrorism, regardless of their social standing, position, or relationship to him.

Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary, Musa said he would not shield even his own relatives if found culpable.

“If my brother, my son—if he is doing this thing—he should be picked. The law should take its course,” he declared.

The lawmaker raised alarm over the rapid escalation of insecurity across the country, noting that what began “in one local government” had now spread nationwide.

Expressing frustration, Musa criticised instances where suspected bandits allegedly arrested with weapons were released without proper investigation or prosecution.

“They were arrested with AK-47s and released with AK-47s—no gunshots, no arrest, nothing. And then tomorrow, we wake up to another banditry. Why should it end like that?” he queried.

He appealed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to take stronger leadership in confronting the nation’s security challenges, assuring him of the full support of the Senate.

“Mr. President, it is on you as our leader to tackle this issue head-on, without any fear or favour. We will stand for you—we voted for you… We must own our responsibilities,” he said.

Nigerian govt gives update on Jonathan  return after Guinea-Bissau Military Coup

0

The Federal Government on Thursday confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan is safe and has successfully departed Guinea-Bissau following Wednesday’s military coup in the country.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed this in Abuja during an interview with journalists.

“Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is very safe and out of Guinea-Bissau,” Ebienfa said.

Jonathan had been in the country leading the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission, monitoring last Sunday’s presidential and legislative elections before soldiers announced the takeover of government.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, Jonathan; former Mozambican President and Head of the AU Election Observation Mission, Filipe Nyusi; and Head of the ECOWAS Observation Mission, Issifu Kamara, condemned the coup, describing it as a deliberate attempt to derail Guinea-Bissau’s democratic process.

The trio urged residents to remain calm and reiterated their commitment to supporting Guinea-Bissau through the tense political climate, stressing the need to safeguard peace, stability and the well-being of its people.

Earlier, Nigerian Newssphere reported that members of the House of Representatives had called on the federal government to ensure the safe return of Jonathan.

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to intensify diplomatic efforts to ensure the safe return of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who remains stranded in Guinea-Bissau following a military coup.

Jonathan had travelled to the country as part of a joint African Union, ECOWAS and West African Elders Forum mission to observe last weekend’s presidential election when the coup erupted.

The issue was raised during Thursday’s plenary, which had initially centred on the hardships facing Nigerians, until Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu drew attention to what he described as “an urgent national concern.”

House Leader Julius Ihonvbere informed lawmakers that Jonathan, well-known for his extensive election observation roles across Africa and beyond, was on official international duty when the military takeover occurred.

“Currently, he is in Guinea-Bissau due to the coup,” Ihonvbere said, stressing that while the House was not debating the coup itself, Jonathan’s safety was “a matter of national importance.” He added that relevant government agencies were already working to facilitate his safe evacuation.

Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda also backed the motion, praising Jonathan’s global democratic credentials and insisting that all Nigerians caught in the crisis must be prioritised.

“The importance we attach to his life should also apply to every other Nigerian, whether at home or abroad,” Chinda said.

Following a voice vote, the House adopted the motion, calling on the Federal Government to step up diplomatic engagement to secure Jonathan’s return and ensure the safety of all Nigerians affected by the unrest in Guinea-Bissau.

Prison sentence: Why Omotosho’s court judgment against Nnamdi Kanu will be reversed- APC chieftain, Eze

0

A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has criticised the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which on Wednesday sentenced the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment.

The ruling, delivered by Justice James Omotosho, has sparked outrage, with Eze insisting the judge acted improperly by proceeding with the verdict despite a pending appeal challenging the court’s jurisdiction and the legality of Kanu’s controversial rendition to Nigeria.

Eze, a former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), said the judgment fell short of established legal norms, accusing the court of ignoring Kanu’s final written address—an address many believe highlighted fundamental irregularities in the trial.

Drama reportedly unfolded in court on judgment day when Justice Omotosho allegedly denied Kanu the chance to make his final remarks. The IPOB leader was subsequently escorted out of the courtroom before the sentence was delivered in his absence.

Citing Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees fair hearing, Eze argued that Kanu’s rights were “grossly and unapologetically violated,” describing the entire process as a corruption of justice.

He contrasted Kanu’s life sentence with the recent five-year jail term handed to Boko Haram co-founder Mamman Nur on November 18, despite his links to the deaths of more than 2,000 civilians.

Eze further lamented the continued activities of jihadist groups, which he said have been killing, destroying, and kidnapping innocent citizens with little effective response from authorities.

The APC chieftain called for calm, expressing confidence that Kanu would eventually regain his freedom, insisting the conviction “violated Nigerian laws and international human rights instruments.”

ICRC, NMA Unite in Abuja to Safeguard Nigeria’s Healthcare Amid Rising Threats

0

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) officially launched a collaborative initiative today aimed at systematically documenting and combating the rising wave of violence against healthcare workers and facilities across Nigeria.

ICRC-NMA

The event titled “ICRC-NMA Meeting on the Protection of Healthcare in Nigeria: Sensitization and Data Engagement for Evidence-Based Action,” held in Abuja, brought together NMA national officers and state branch secretaries to strengthen reporting mechanisms and build a robust evidence base for advocacy.

In his opening remarks, the NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, represented by the Second Vice President, Dr. Ushakuma Anenga, while welcoming participants, highlighted the gravity of the crisis the Nigeria healthcare faces.

“Violence against health facilities, attacks on medical personnel, intimidation, disruptions, and assaults are prevalent, even more so in the northern part of the country. Continuous provision of healthcare is under threat.” He said.

He described the new Healthcare in Danger data system as an objective tool that will capture incidents on the ground, provide clear evidence, and enable targeted interventions.

Dr. Anenga urged the state secretaries – whom he called “the engine room of the association” to lead with commitment and ensure timely reporting.

Delivering his speech, the NMA Secretary-General, Mr. Ben Egbo, also emphasized the urgency of the initiative, noting that violence against health workers has become one of the most acute issues facing the medical profession in Nigeria.

“Where are the statistics? How do you convince policymakers that this is actually happening?” he asked.

Mr. Egbo also cited a recent case in which a female doctor was severely beaten inside a hospital premises, triggering a strike by resident doctors until the perpetrator was arrested and charged to court.

“That case must proceed to a logical conclusion to serve as a deterrent,” he stressed, adding that health workers risk their lives daily only to face molestation from the very people they serve.

He pledged the full support of his office and secretarial staff in collating data from all states to ensure the project’s success.

The Deputy Head of Delegation, ICRC, Mr. James Matthews, emphasised that far too many incidents of violence against healthcare remain undocumented, thereby limiting advocacy efforts.

“Every day, health professionals and facilities are confronted with incidents that hinder their ability to deliver life-saving services,” Mr. Matthews said.

According to him, “Today’s meeting aims to build a unified and systematic approach to reporting, enabling reliable data, stronger analysis, and evidence based action.”

He commended the NMA leadership and branch secretaries for their essential role and assured participants of ICRC’s continued technical support and tools to make the reporting system effective.

At the one-day event concluded with a commitment from both organisations to sustain the partnership and roll out the data system nationwide, with NMA state branches serving as the primary reporting points.

Meanwhile, participants described the engagement as a critical step toward protecting Nigeria’s healthcare workers and ensuring that attacks do not go unnoticed or unaddressed.

Bandits dare Wike, kidnap six girls, boy in Abuja

0

Bandits have abducted a 16-year-old boy and six young women during a late-night attack on Gidan-Bijimi in Kawu ward, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.

The incident, confirmed on Thursday by Daily Trust, occurred near the Kaduna border. Residents said the attackers, armed with AK-47 rifles, stormed two houses at about 9:47 p.m. on Wednesday, firing repeatedly before whisking away the victims.

A resident, Suleiman Shuaibu, told the newspaper that the girls taken are between 17 and 23 years old. He confirmed that one of the victims is his cousin.

“The call came around 9:53 p.m. that bandits had invaded Gidan-Bijimi and taken six girls. Unfortunately, my cousin sister is among them,” he said.

Shuaibu added that local vigilantes attempted to resist the attackers but were overpowered by their superior firepower. The invasion threw the community into panic, forcing some residents to flee overnight.

As of Thursday morning, no contact had been established with the abductors.

The attack comes days after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike dismissed claims of worsening insecurity in Abuja and suspended the FCT education mandate secretary for issuing a school closure directive over security concerns.

NNPCL annouces fresh fuel price reduction as Dangote, depot owners slash rates

0

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reduced the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) following a fresh round of ex-depot price cuts by Dangote Refinery and major depot owners.

A Nigerian Newssphere correspondent who monitored filling stations across Abuja on Thursday confirmed that NNPCL has adjusted its retail price from N945 to N930 per litre, a reduction of N10. The new price has taken effect across several NNPCL retail outlets, including those along Kubwa Expressway, Gwarimpa, Wuse Zone 4, Zone 6, and other parts of the capital city.

Other marketers have also revised their prices. Ranoil stations in Gwarimpa now sell at N935, down from N940, while MRS and AP Ardova outlets in Abuja dispensed petrol between N930 and N935 per litre as of Thursday morning.

The adjustments follow significant reductions in ex-depot rates by Dangote Refinery and depot operators such as Pinnacle and Aiteo, who dropped their prices by at least N10, now selling at N846, N845, and N844 per litre respectively.

Speaking earlier, the spokesperson of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Chinedu Ukadike, told Nigerian Newssphere that petrol pump prices are likely to decline further as the ongoing “petrol price war” continues to intensify.
