El-Rufai questions disparity in terrorism sentences for Boko Haram, Nnamdi  Kanu

0

Nigerian lawmaker Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, the member representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has raised concerns over what he described as inconsistent sentencing for individuals convicted of terrorism-related offenses in Nigeria.

Speaking during Thursday’s plenary, El-Rufai questioned why a Boko Haram member recently received a 20-year sentence while the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was handed a life sentence for similar terrorism-related charges.

His comments follow the Federal High Court judgment earlier this month in Abuja, where Hussaini Ismaila, a leader of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Days later, Kanu was convicted and given a life sentence, a development the lawmaker believes raises questions about fairness in the judicial process.

“There was a conviction of a terrorist, a Boko Haram member… he was convicted for 20 years by the High Court. But Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was convicted last week, and his own conviction said life sentence,” El-Rufai said. “I don’t understand—one terrorist is getting 20 years and the other one is getting a life sentence. There is this idea that justice is served differently,” El-Rufai, who is the son of Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, said.

The Nigerian Newsphere had earlier reported that Arise Television anchor Rufai Oseni criticized the federal government for allegedly engaging in negotiations with bandits while Kanu received a harsh prison sentence.

UNIPORT Student Sentenced to Death for Murder of Girlfriend in Nigeria

A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has sentenced a 400-level Petrochemical Engineering student of the University of Port Harcourt, Damian Okoligwe, to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend, 300-level Biochemistry student, Justina Otuene.

Justice Chiwen Nsirim Nwosu delivered the ruling on Friday, declaring that the prosecution, led by Charles Obediah-Mbaba, had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court affirmed that Okoligwe, now 26, was responsible for Justina’s death, which occurred in October 2023 at his residence.

Okoligwe was arrested after neighbours alerted the police to a foul odour coming from his room, prompting officers from Ozuoba Police Division to forcefully enter the apartment. They discovered Justina’s dismembered body stuffed inside a Ghana-must-go bag. He was subsequently accused of killing her for alleged ritual purposes.

The case, initially heard at a Magistrate Court, was transferred to the Department of Public Prosecution in November 2023 before the murder trial commenced in May 2024 under the state’s supervision.

Despite denying the allegations in a 2023 media interview, Okoligwe admitted returning days after her death to dispose of the body but insisted he never removed any organs.

Following the judgment, prosecuting counsel Obediah Charles Mbaba commended the court for delivering justice, noting that the verdict brings closure to the family of the deceased and serves as a deterrent to youths seeking quick wealth through unlawful means.

Justina’s elder brother, Osat-Awaji Otuene, described the judgment as “well-deserved,” expressing relief that the family finally received justice.

The defence counsel declined to comment on the ruling.

The Imo State Police Command has summoned the Chief Executive Officer of TMT Travels & Tours Ltd, Ifeanyi Onukwubiri, for questioning over allegations of visa fraud and obtaining money under false pretence.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry, disclosed in a statement on Friday that the invitation followed an order by the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, directing a full investigation into multiple complaints lodged against the travel firm.

According to the statement, at least nine Nigerian passports have so far been recovered from the company as part of the ongoing probe.

The Command appealed for calm, assuring affected individuals that efforts are underway to recover funds paid for visa services and retrieve any remaining documents in the company’s possession. The police also urged the public to exercise caution and conduct due diligence when engaging in visa or travel arrangements.

Further updates on the investigation will be released in due course, the statement added.

The development comes just two days after a report by FIJ detailed how an Enugu-based businessman, Ifeanyichukwu Nwafor, claimed he paid N2 million to TMT Travels & Tours Ltd but did not receive the visa he was promised.

Biafra: Buhari’s Former Aide, Ahmad reacts as Nnamdi Kanu reportedly converted Sokoto Wardens

A former presidential aide to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has dismissed circulating reports alleging that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), converted two wardens at the Sokoto Custodial Centre to join his pro-Biafra agitation.

Social media posts had claimed that Kanu influenced the wardens to “hate Nigeria,” leading to their resignation from service. The claims sparked widespread reactions online.

Reacting on Friday, Ahmad described the report as false and illogical.

“I just read one of the dumbest posts on Facebook, a claim that Nnamdi Kanu has ‘converted’ two prison wardens in Sokoto Prison to join him in hating Nigeria and that the wardens even resigned,” he wrote. “His people believe it and have been circulating the post without a shred of logic or evidence.”

Kanu is currently serving a life sentence after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him on terrorism-related charges and ordered that he be held at the Sokoto Custodial Centre.

Trump disclosed the policy in a Thanksgiving Day post on his Truth Social account, saying the pause will allow the U.S. immigration system to “recover” and reverse what he called “millions of Joe Biden illegal admissions.”

He also vowed to remove anyone in the U.S. who is not a “net asset” or “incapable of loving” the country.

The announcement came shortly after Trump confirmed the death of West Virginia National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom, who was shot near the White House. The attacker was identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal from Afghanistan.

Following Trump’s directive, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director said he has ordered a review of all previously issued green cards from countries deemed “of concern.” He referenced 19 nations listed in a June presidential proclamation, including Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Haiti, Cuba, Sierra Leone, Togo, Eritrea, and others.
