Nigerian govt gives update on Jonathan  return after Guinea-Bissau Military Coup

The Federal Government on Thursday confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan is safe and has successfully departed Guinea-Bissau following Wednesday’s military coup in the country.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed this in Abuja during an interview with journalists.

“Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is very safe and out of Guinea-Bissau,” Ebienfa said.

Jonathan had been in the country leading the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission, monitoring last Sunday’s presidential and legislative elections before soldiers announced the takeover of government.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, Jonathan; former Mozambican President and Head of the AU Election Observation Mission, Filipe Nyusi; and Head of the ECOWAS Observation Mission, Issifu Kamara, condemned the coup, describing it as a deliberate attempt to derail Guinea-Bissau’s democratic process.

The trio urged residents to remain calm and reiterated their commitment to supporting Guinea-Bissau through the tense political climate, stressing the need to safeguard peace, stability and the well-being of its people.

Earlier, Nigerian Newssphere reported that members of the House of Representatives had called on the federal government to ensure the safe return of Jonathan.
