Gov Fubara finally dumps PDP for APC

0

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fubara announced his decision on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

“We can’t support President (Tinubu) if we don’t fully identify with him, not just backyard support. Our decision this evening is that we are moving to the APC”, Fubara said.

His defection comes amid heightened political tension in the oil-rich Niger Delta region and follows his visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa just a day earlier.

The move also aligns with recent developments in the state assembly, where several lawmakers recently crossed from the PDP to the APC.

With this development, Fubara joins the growing list of PDP governors who have switched to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Tension rises as Belgian Military Aircraft Heads to Burkina Faso

A Belgium Air Force Airbus A400M Atlas cargo aircraft is reportedly en route to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in a development described as “unexpected” by Sahel security analyst Brant Philip.

Philip, who is known for tracking military activities across West Africa, disclosed the movement on Tuesday in a post on X. He noted that the Belgian aircraft was headed toward the same country where a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) C-130 cargo plane remains stationed.

According to him, the flight activity comes hours after an unidentified aircraft departed Bamako, Mali, flew northwards, and later turned south toward Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso — the location where the NAF C-130 has been held since Monday.

Philip suggested the aircraft from Bamako could be transporting a Malian delegation.

He wrote: “Belgium Air Force Airbus 400M Atlas cargo aircraft is unexpectedly landing in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

An unidentified aircraft from Bamako, Mali, took off a few hours ago towards the north of the country before heading south towards Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, where the Nigerian Air Force C-130 cargo plane is currently stationed — possible Malian delegation en route.”

At least 11 Nigerian soldiers have been detained in Bobo-Dioulasso after their aircraft made an emergency landing, which authorities in the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) described as a violation of its airspace.

The situation unfolds amid heightened tension in the region following the December 7 attempted coup in the Benin Republic. While a group of military officers announced they had toppled the government, the Beninese presidency later confirmed that the coup attempt was thwarted and that President Patrice Talon remained safe.

BREAKING: Senate approves Tinubu’s Request to Deploy troops to Benin Republic

President Tinbu

The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of efforts to help restore peace and stability after last weekend’s attempted coup.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the approval during Tuesday’s plenary, following the lawmakers’ consideration of the request in the Committee of the Whole, in accordance with Section 5, Part II of the Constitution.

The lawmakers unanimously endorsed the deployment, granting full legislative backing for Nigeria’s participation in the regional security initiative.

Akpabio described the move as timely and necessary, warning that instability in any neighbouring country poses a broader security risk to the West African region.

“An injury to one is an injury to all,” he said, emphasising Nigeria’s duty to support its Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) partner.

Nigerian Newssphere  recalls that President Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate seeking approval for the troop deployment.

Nigerian govt shuts Abuja–Kaduna Train Service temporarily

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced a temporary disruption in the Abuja–Kaduna train service and appealed to passengers for patience as efforts to restore full operations continue.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, addressed public concerns over the recent reduction in train frequency along the corridor. He said the corporation had reviewed an article by veteran journalist Muhammad Iskeel Abdullahi and acknowledged the issues raised as both “genuine and patriotic.”

Opeifa described the Abuja–Kaduna route as a flagship component of Nigeria’s railway modernisation project, noting that any disruption—no matter how minor—has a significant impact on the public.

According to him, the current reduction in service is linked to damage sustained by the Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) rolling stock during an incident on August 26. He expressed regret over the inconvenience passengers have faced.

He clarified that the disruption is not due to neglect, but to two major setbacks: the March 2022 terrorist attack on the corridor, which led to an extensive review of safety measures, and a recent derailment that damaged several coaches, reducing available operational stock.

“Repairs and refurbishment are ongoing, and arrangements are being finalised for the deployment of additional coaches to restore normal service frequency,” he said.

Opeifa assured commuters that the challenges are temporary and part of a broader recovery process. He added that the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, continues to support nationwide rail infrastructure improvements, with the Minister of Transport working closely with the NRC to fast-track full restoration of services.

Tinubu Seeks Senate approval to deploy Nigerian Troops to Benin Republic

Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally asked the Senate to approve the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of a peacekeeping mission following the attempted coup in the neighbouring country.

The request, conveyed in a letter to the upper chamber, comes amid heightened tension in Cotonou after an attack on President Patrice Talon’s residence in the Le Guézo area early Sunday.

DAILY POST earlier reported that a group of soldiers, allegedly led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, attempted to overthrow the government and briefly seized control of the national television station.

In the wake of the unrest, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said it coordinated with Beninese authorities as part of efforts to prevent further escalation and support the country’s legitimate government.

Tinubu’s request is expected to be deliberated upon by the Senate in the coming days.

AES: Niger Junta Imposes New Restrictions on Goods From Nigeria

0

The military authorities in the Republic of Niger have announced fresh restrictions on goods entering the country from Nigeria, citing heightened security concerns across the region.

The directive, signed by Colonel Mohamed Yacouba Siddo, Customs Formalities Corporation Officer, surfaced on Monday after it was shared on X by security analyst Brant Grant.

According to the notice, all goods originating from Nigeria — particularly what Niger described as “miscellaneous goods” — must now be offloaded and thoroughly inspected at designated entry points before being cleared to transit further into the country.

“For security requirements, all goods originating from Nigeria, particularly so-called miscellaneous goods, must be unloaded and inspected at the entry offices before any transit formalities,” the directive stated.

The document added that only goods with valid documentation issued from recognized ports of discharge would be allowed to proceed directly to their final destinations.

Colonel Siddo ordered strict enforcement of the new measure and directed customs officers to immediately report any difficulties encountered during implementation.

This development comes amid rising regional tensions following Sunday’s failed coup attempt in the Republic of Benin.

It also follows claims by the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) that 11 Nigerian military personnel were detained in Burkina Faso for allegedly violating its airspace.

However, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has dismissed the allegation, insisting that the aircraft in question only carried out an emergency landing due to a technical safety issue and did not breach any airspace regulations.

AES: NAF explains emergency landing of its aircraft in Burkina Faso

0

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has clarified why one of its transport aircraft was forced to land in Burkina Faso, amid growing concerns following allegations from the Confederation of Sahel States (AES).

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NAF spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame said the aircraft made a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso due to a technical fault, dismissing claims that it deliberately violated Burkina Faso’s airspace.

This comes after the AES — a bloc made up of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Republic — accused Nigeria of breaching its airspace with a C-130 aircraft said to be carrying 11 soldiers. The alliance, led by junta leaders who withdrew their countries from ECOWAS, alleged that the aircraft was forced to land on Monday after entering restricted airspace.

The AES statement, signed by Mali’s military leader, Assimi Goita, condemned the incident and warned that any aircraft violating its airspace would be “neutralised” as part of heightened defensive measures.

However, Ejodame stressed that the NAF aircraft had no intention of entering AES territory and only diverted to the nearest available airfield after the crew detected a safety-related issue.

“Following takeoff from Lagos, the crew observed a technical concern which necessitated a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, in line with international aviation protocols,” he said, adding that all personnel are safe and have received cordial treatment from local authorities.

He confirmed that the aircraft was on a ferry mission to Portugal and that arrangements are being made for the journey to continue as planned.

“The Nigerian Air Force remains committed to strict compliance with operational procedures and safety standards while ensuring the protection of its personnel,” he added.

Naira falls against US Dollar Across Official, Parallel Markets

0

The naira opened the week on a downward trend, depreciating against the US dollar across both the official and parallel foreign exchange markets on Monday.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the currency weakened further at the official window, closing at N1,451.86 per dollar, compared to N1,450.43 recorded on Friday. This reflects a decline 1.4N1.43.

In the parallel market, the pressure was more pronounced as the naira slid by N15, trading at N1,490 per dollar, down from N1,475 at the end of last week.

The depreciation comes despite a notable rise in Nigeria’s external reserves, which have surged to a six-year high of $45.11 billion as of December 5, 2025.

The development also follows the CBN’s publication on Monday of a list of 82 fully licensed Bureau De Change (BDC) operators in the country.

Transfer: Salah in shock move to Real Madrid

0

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is reportedly being lined up for a sensational transfer to Real Madrid next year.

Speculation around the forward’s future has intensified after his explosive interview following the Reds’ 3-3 draw with Leeds United last weekend. Salah, who was left on the bench for the full 90 minutes by manager Arne Slot, claimed his relationship with the coach had broken down and accused the club of “throwing him under the bus.”

The 33-year-old has now been excluded from Liverpool’s squad to face Inter Milan in the Champions League, fueling rumours he could depart Anfield as early as the January transfer window.

According to Fichajes, Real Madrid are monitoring the situation closely and “could take advantage” by submitting an offer for the Egyptian forward. The LaLiga champions have reportedly “entered the race for what could become one of the winter window’s most impactful deals” and are even considering an “explosive exchange proposal.”
