Tension rises as Belgian Military Aircraft Heads to Burkina Faso
A Belgium Air Force Airbus A400M Atlas cargo aircraft is reportedly en route to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in a development described as “unexpected” by Sahel security analyst Brant Philip.
Philip, who is known for tracking military activities across West Africa, disclosed the movement on Tuesday in a post on X. He noted that the Belgian aircraft was headed toward the same country where a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) C-130 cargo plane remains stationed.
According to him, the flight activity comes hours after an unidentified aircraft departed Bamako, Mali, flew northwards, and later turned south toward Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso — the location where the NAF C-130 has been held since Monday.
Philip suggested the aircraft from Bamako could be transporting a Malian delegation.
He wrote: “Belgium Air Force Airbus 400M Atlas cargo aircraft is unexpectedly landing in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
An unidentified aircraft from Bamako, Mali, took off a few hours ago towards the north of the country before heading south towards Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, where the Nigerian Air Force C-130 cargo plane is currently stationed — possible Malian delegation en route.”
At least 11 Nigerian soldiers have been detained in Bobo-Dioulasso after their aircraft made an emergency landing, which authorities in the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) described as a violation of its airspace.
The situation unfolds amid heightened tension in the region following the December 7 attempted coup in the Benin Republic. While a group of military officers announced they had toppled the government, the Beninese presidency later confirmed that the coup attempt was thwarted and that President Patrice Talon remained safe.
The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of efforts to help restore peace and stability after last weekend’s attempted coup.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the approval during Tuesday’s plenary, following the lawmakers’ consideration of the request in the Committee of the Whole, in accordance with Section 5, Part II of the Constitution.
The lawmakers unanimously endorsed the deployment, granting full legislative backing for Nigeria’s participation in the regional security initiative.
Akpabio described the move as timely and necessary, warning that instability in any neighbouring country poses a broader security risk to the West African region.
“An injury to one is an injury to all,” he said, emphasising Nigeria’s duty to support its Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) partner.
Nigerian Newssphere recalls that President Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate seeking approval for the troop deployment.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally asked the Senate to approve the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of a peacekeeping mission following the attempted coup in the neighbouring country.
The request, conveyed in a letter to the upper chamber, comes amid heightened tension in Cotonou after an attack on President Patrice Talon’s residence in the Le Guézo area early Sunday.
DAILY POST earlier reported that a group of soldiers, allegedly led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, attempted to overthrow the government and briefly seized control of the national television station.
In the wake of the unrest, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said it coordinated with Beninese authorities as part of efforts to prevent further escalation and support the country’s legitimate government.
Tinubu’s request is expected to be deliberated upon by the Senate in the coming days.
The military authorities in the Republic of Niger have announced fresh restrictions on goods entering the country from Nigeria, citing heightened security concerns across the region.
The directive, signed by Colonel Mohamed Yacouba Siddo, Customs Formalities Corporation Officer, surfaced on Monday after it was shared on X by security analyst Brant Grant.
According to the notice, all goods originating from Nigeria — particularly what Niger described as “miscellaneous goods” — must now be offloaded and thoroughly inspected at designated entry points before being cleared to transit further into the country.
“For security requirements, all goods originating from Nigeria, particularly so-called miscellaneous goods, must be unloaded and inspected at the entry offices before any transit formalities,” the directive stated.
The document added that only goods with valid documentation issued from recognized ports of discharge would be allowed to proceed directly to their final destinations.
Colonel Siddo ordered strict enforcement of the new measure and directed customs officers to immediately report any difficulties encountered during implementation.
This development comes amid rising regional tensions following Sunday’s failed coup attempt in the Republic of Benin.
It also follows claims by the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) that 11 Nigerian military personnel were detained in Burkina Faso for allegedly violating its airspace.
However, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has dismissed the allegation, insisting that the aircraft in question only carried out an emergency landing due to a technical safety issue and did not breach any airspace regulations.
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is reportedly being lined up for a sensational transfer to Real Madrid next year.
Speculation around the forward’s future has intensified after his explosive interview following the Reds’ 3-3 draw with Leeds United last weekend. Salah, who was left on the bench for the full 90 minutes by manager Arne Slot, claimed his relationship with the coach had broken down and accused the club of “throwing him under the bus.”
The 33-year-old has now been excluded from Liverpool’s squad to face Inter Milan in the Champions League, fueling rumours he could depart Anfield as early as the January transfer window.
According to Fichajes, Real Madrid are monitoring the situation closely and “could take advantage” by submitting an offer for the Egyptian forward. The LaLiga champions have reportedly “entered the race for what could become one of the winter window’s most impactful deals” and are even considering an “explosive exchange proposal.”
