Nigerians dump Dangote fuel for cheaper petrol at NNPCL, other retail outlets

0

Many Nigerians are shunning premium motor spirit from Dangote Refinery due to higher pump prices.

This follows a noticeable drop in patronage at MRS filling stations in Abuja. The filling stations are owned by Alhaji Sayyu Idris Dantata, half-brother of Dangote Refinery Chairman, Aliko Dangote.

During a visit to MRS outlets on Kubwa Expressway and in Lugbe, Nigerian Newssphere observed that petrol was being sold at N945 per liter, which is N25 higher than prices at nearby Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and AA RANO stations, where fuel sold for N920 per liter.

A manager at one of the MRS stations, who requested anonymity, said the higher price has caused a sharp decline in customer turnout since November 2025.

“Our patronage has dropped. Queues have reduced because our price is higher. Management issued a circular to reduce the pump price to N920, but it has not been implemented. We hope it will be reviewed soon to boost sales,” he told Nigerian Newssphere.

Speaking on the situation, the National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Billy Gillis-Harry, confirmed the challenge, describing unstable PMS pricing as a major concern for the downstream sector.

He cautioned Nigerians against focusing solely on cheaper prices, noting that unrealistic fuel pricing could create deeper supply problems.

“We must stabilize PMS pricing. Our appeal to Nigerians is: don’t let a cheap price deceive you. If pricing is not accurate, the effects will show in the coming weeks and months,” he said.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that NNPCL and several other stations have reduced fuel prices twice in the last two weeks, pushing pump prices in Abuja and surrounding areas to between N920 and N945 as of Monday, December 8, 2025.

As of Monday, ex-depot fuel prices stood at N826 per liter at Dangote Refinery, N825 at Aiteo, and N835 at MENJ, among others.

“Disgraceful”- Carragher slams Salah over remarks on Liverpool Manager, Arne Slot

0

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has taken aim at Mohamed Salah over what he described as the winger’s “disgraceful” comments about manager Arne Slot and the club.

Carragher accused the Egyptian forward of intentionally trying to undermine Slot, following Salah’s explosive interview after Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds United.

Salah had publicly criticised the club and the manager for “throwing him under the bus,” remarks that sparked widespread debate.

Reacting on Sky Sports, Carragher said:

“It was a disgrace what Salah did. When he stops in a mixed zone, it’s choreographed with his agent to cause maximum damage and strengthen his position.

He chose this weekend… he’s chosen this time to go for the manager and get him sacked.”

In response to the controversy, Slot excluded Salah from Liverpool’s squad for Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League clash against Inter Milan.

Manchester United climbed into the Premier League’s top six after a convincing 4-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.

United, who were held to a 1-1 draw at West Ham last week, started brightly at Molineux and went ahead through Bruno Fernandes. Wolves equalised before halftime as Jean-Ricner Bellegarde finished a well-worked team move.

Ruben Amorim’s side regained control after the break, with Bryan Mbeumo restoring the lead. Mason Mount and Fernandes then scored to seal the win.

United now sit sixth on 25 points, level with Chelsea but behind on goal difference.

Coup: Over 10 Nigerian Soldiers detained in Burkina  Faso after strike in Benin Republic

0

At least 11 Nigerian soldiers have been detained by Burkina Faso’s military authorities in Bobo-Dioulasso, in the country’s southwest.

Their arrest followed an emergency landing by a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft, which the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) accused of “violating AES airspace.” The development was confirmed in a statement released by the AES and shared on X by security analyst Brant Grant on Monday night.

According to the statement, the aircraft entered Burkinabe airspace without authorization before making the unscheduled landing. The bloc also warned that any further unauthorized military flights would be “neutralized.”

The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions after Nigeria deployed military aircraft to Benin Republic on Sunday, in response to an attempted coup in the neighbouring country.

Nigeria bans physical cash collection in all MDAs

0

The Federal Government has banned the use of physical cash for all revenue payments and directed Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to deploy POS terminals and other electronic payment devices within 45 days.

The directive was contained in new Treasury circulars issued by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, which stated that all payments must now be made electronically and routed through approved channels integrated into the Treasury Single Account.

The government expressed concern over continued cash collection at MDA revenue points, warning that it violates existing financial regulations and weakens the e-payment system. MDAs were ordered to display notices prohibiting cash and to sensitise staff and the public.

The Treasury also stopped MDAs from making unauthorised deductions through customised payment platforms, citing revenue leakages. From January 1, 2026, a unified electronic receipt, the Federal Treasury e-Receipt (FTe-R), will be issued for all payments.

A final circular announced the rollout of the Revenue Optimisation (RevOP) platform, approved as the central system for monitoring and managing government revenue

Regina Daniels’ Mother Rita, Loses AGN Presidential bid to Northerner

0

Rita Daniels, mother of Nollywood star Regina Daniels, has lost her bid to become President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).

The election, held on Saturday during the Guild’s annual general meeting in Benin, Edo State, saw AGN National Secretary Abubakar Yakubu emerge victorious. Yakubu, who succeeds Emeka Rollas, secured 116 votes to defeat Rita Daniels, who polled 113 votes. Three ballots were declared invalid.

Yakubu’s emergence marks the first time a Northern actor will lead the Guild since its formation in the 1990s.

The development comes weeks after outgoing president Emeka Rollas publicly urged Rita Daniels to prioritise her daughter’s wellbeing rather than pursuing the AGN presidency, following his claim that Regina Daniels “needs help.”

It’s time for concrete action now – US delegation reveals details of meeting with Nigerian govt

0

A visiting United States Congressional delegation has disclosed outcomes of its high-level discussions with Nigerian government officials on the country’s security challenges.

The delegation, which arrived in Nigeria on Sunday, was received by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. The visit comes as both nations deepen diplomatic engagement amid growing concerns in Washington over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

In a statement on Monday, Riley Moore, the Congressman representing West Virginia’s Second District and a member of the delegation, described the meeting as “productive and positive.”

Moore said the talks focused on concrete actions that, if fully implemented, would strengthen security nationwide. He noted that the Nigerian government showed openness and willingness to collaborate with the US, but stressed that such openness “must translate into concrete action.”

He also thanked President Bola Tinubu’s administration for “rescuing the 100 innocent and precious Catholic school children,” adding that their release reflects an improved government response to insecurity and aligns with measures under the president’s emergency security declaration.

Moore said the US delegation’s concerns were received with urgency and highlighted the newly formed Nigeria–US joint task force as a promising step toward enhanced cooperation.

“There is still much work ahead, but progress is being made,” he stated, expressing optimism about continued dialogue and collaboration between both countries.

“Peace be with you all. God bless the great people of Nigeria,” he concluded.

I’ll switch off your microphone- Remi Tinubu attacks Gov Adeleke

0

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, on Sunday cautioned Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke during an event in Ile-Ife, warning that she would switch off his microphone if he continued singing while delivering his speech.

The incident occurred during her installation as the Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua. A viral video circulating on social media shows Governor Adeleke singing worship songs midway through his remarks, prompting the First Lady to walk up to the podium to interrupt him.

“I give you five minutes to conclude your speech. Enough with the music, or I will switch off the microphone,” Remi Tinubu told the governor in front of attendees.

The exchange has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians debating whether her intervention was appropriate.

A user, Aremo3825981, commented: “What do you think will happen if he sings ‘on your mandate we shall stand’?”

Another, U_y_a_i, wrote: “Unacceptable public conduct. There are better ways to communicate time limits than threatening to cut off a governor’s mic.”

Nigerian singer Seun Kuti, the youngest son of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has responded to a viral video of dancer and singer Korra Obidi performing a twerking tribute at his father’s graveside.

Nigerian Newssphere had reported that Korra, during her visit to Nigeria over the weekend, stopped by Fela’s resting place and performed a brief twerk in his honour. Sharing the clip on Instagram, she wrote:

“I gave baba an offering. We visited the grave site of Anikulapo Kuti today, and we all know that one thing Fela loved was a woman with gyrating hips. So I decided to twerk for baba.”

Reacting to the gesture, Seun Kuti expressed appreciation, noting that the act aligned with Fela’s colourful persona and cultural influence.

“You guys know what baba likes but you will never give him what he wants. E go better for you, my sister,” he said.

The video has stirred mixed reactions online, with some social media users criticising the performance as inappropriate, while others defended it as a playful nod to Fela’s flamboyant legacy.
