Truck drivers block Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as motorists lament

0

Traffic on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway was thrown into chaos on Wednesday after a truck driver allegedly blocked both lanes at the Ogere axis to protest what he called extortion by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Stranded motorists said the driver claimed FRSC personnel had confiscated his truck battery, prompting him to obstruct the Ibadan-bound lane. Other truck drivers soon joined the protest, extending the blockade to the Lagos-bound section and bringing movement to a complete halt.

Police and Nigerian Army personnel were deployed to restore order, but attempts to clear the road were reportedly resisted by the protesting crowd, delaying any immediate resolution.

Nigerians, thousands of other students hit as U.S. revokes 85,000 visas

0

The United State State Department has revoked about 85,000 visas over the past year, affecting Nigerians, other foreign nationals, and thousands of international students.

Officials say the spike in cancellations is tied to heightened public-safety concerns, though immigrant-rights groups warn that the broadened criteria may unfairly punish people who pose no real threat.

A State Department official confirmed that more than 8,000 international students were affected—more than twice the number recorded the previous year.

While some revocations were linked to alleged offences such as DUI, assault, or theft, authorities noted that the surge also stems from stricter vetting procedures and a tougher stance on perceived security risks.

“These are individuals we believe present a direct risk to community safety,” the official said, adding that consular officers have been instructed to apply a wider definition of conduct that could affect visa eligibility.

The intensified scrutiny now cuts across several visa categories. In recent weeks, the administration directed consular posts to introduce additional screening for H-1B applicants, a visa route heavily used by technology companies and specialised employers hiring talent from abroad.

Internal guidelines reported by U.S. media also show that officers have been told to deny visas to applicants suspected of engaging in activities that could hinder or suppress protected speech in the U.S.—a directive immigration analysts describe as unusually broad and difficult to measure.

BREAKING: Seven Osun APC Governorship Aspirants step Down After Meeting With Tinubu

0

At least seven governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State have withdrawn from the race following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday.

The aspirants agreed to rally behind Bola Oyebamiji, who has now emerged as the party’s consensus candidate ahead of the upcoming primary election.

However, one of the aspirants, Iyiola Omisore, boycotted the meeting. Omisore had earlier dismissed his disqualification from the primary as “a joke.”

Those who stepped down include former Deputy Governor Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, Dotun Babayemi, Akin Ogunbiyi, Senator Babajide Omoworare, Kunle Adegoke (SAN), Babatunde Haketer Oralusi, and Mulikat Abiola Jimoh.

EFCC detains Former AGF Abubakar Malami

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, after he failed to meet the bail conditions earlier granted to him.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, a source within the commission confirmed that Malami remained in EFCC custody until 10 p.m. on Tuesday for not fulfilling the bail requirements.

Malami is reportedly being questioned over allegations bordering on money laundering, the operation of suspicious accounts, and other financial infractions. He is also being probed in connection with terrorism financing and the handling of recovered Abacha loot from Switzerland and the Island of Jersey.

“We arrested him for not meeting his bail conditions, and he will remain in our custody until those conditions are met. He was initially granted bail but did not comply. The offences against him are many,” the EFCC source said.

The commission has also directed the former minister to appear daily for interrogation throughout December as investigations continue.

“Presently, we are investigating him for 18 different offences, including money laundering, abuse of office, and terrorism financing. We cannot determine the total amount involved yet because new details continue to emerge,” the source added.

Seyi Tinubu more powerful than IGP, CDS, DSS combined- Sowore

0

Activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, holds greater power than several of Nigeria’s top security chiefs.

In a post shared on his X account on Wednesday, Sowore claimed that Seyi Tinubu has more power than the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Sowore further accused Seyi Tinubu of operating beyond the law, alleging that he ordered the detention of the  National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) factional President, Atiku Abubakar Isah.

According to him, “Seyi Tinubu ordered the detention of NANS President Atiku Abubakar Isah by the DSS months after he was allegedly brutalized by Seyi Tinubu’s thugs. It took intense pressure and sustained intervention to secure his release. Seyi Tinubu wields more power than the IGP, CDS, DSS, and NSA combined — an unelected authority operating above the law.”

His comments were in response to remarks by Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, who suggested that President Tinubu should have deployed Seyi — rather than the Nigerian Air Force — to Benin Republic in the wake of the recently foiled coup attempt in the country.

The development comes after Burkina Faso detained eleven Nigerian military officers and grounded a Nigerian Air Force aircraft over an alleged airspace violation before releasing them on Tuesday.

The Nigerian Air Force, however, dismissed the junta’s claims, stating that its aircraft made a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso.

Nnamdi Kanu facing far darker forces in Sokoto Prison than Mandala- Wife

0

Uchechi Kanu, wife of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), says her husband is battling forces “far darker” in Sokoto  Custodial Centre than those confronted by South African anti-apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela.

In a post on X, she insisted that Kanu is not a terrorist, describing him instead as “Africa’s greatest freedom fighter.”

According to her, “Igbo youths and students stand in solidarity with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. He is not a terrorist. He is the greatest African freedom fighter and the leader of millions of Biafrans across the world under the IPOB umbrella.”

Uchechi acknowledged that her husband is not without flaws, saying no human being is perfect, but maintained that “he loves his people, and his people love him, with many willing to defend him with their last breath.”

Comparing his struggle to Mandela’s, she said while Mandela fought opponents who were “amenable to reasoning despite the brutality of apartheid,” Kanu is facing “far darker forces.”

Nnamdi Kanu is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre after being convicted by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges linked to his agitation for the creation of a sovereign Biafran state.

Oyedepo declares open Living Faith Church 2025 Shiloh

0

The senior Pastor of Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners’ Chapel), David Oyedepo, on Tuesday formally declared open the 2025 Shiloh, themed “Breaking New Ground.”

In his opening address, Oyedepo assured worshippers that this year’s Shiloh would mark the beginning of new chapters of blessings in their lives.

He said the opening night would set the tone for remarkable spiritual encounters for the congregation.

“If you are here for the Word, you are returning with it,” he told worshippers.

Speaking further, he stressed the importance of humility, saying, “Without meekness, you cannot partake of any Kingdom feast. It is the garment required to access any Kingdom encounter.”

The 2025 Shiloh, an annual global gathering of the church, commenced on Tuesday, December 9, and will run until Sunday, December 14, 2025.

Ukraine, Russia: Europe weak, decaying- Trump

0

United States President Donald Trump has intensified tensions with key Western allies, describing Europe as “decaying” and weak in its handling of immigration and the war in Ukraine.

In an interview published Tuesday by Politico, Trump urged Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky to conduct elections despite the ongoing Russian invasion, adding that Moscow currently holds the “upper hand.”

His comments follow last week’s release of his administration’s national security strategy, which drew criticism for its sharp tone toward long-standing US partners.

“Most European nations are decaying. They want to be politically correct, and it makes them weak,” the 79-year-old said.

Trump also faulted European governments over their approach to the Ukraine war, amid growing disagreements over Washington’s proposed plan to end the conflict — a plan many European leaders fear could pressure Kyiv into ceding territory to Russia.

European capitals have been working to strengthen relations with Trump since his return to the White House on January 20, particularly on the question of continued US support for Ukraine.

His remarks to Politico are expected to heighten concerns already stirred by the recent US security strategy, which emphasized resisting migration flows into Europe and warned of what it called “civilizational erasure.”

The interview comes shortly after tech billionaire Elon Musk made headlines for remarks calling for the “abolition of Europe.”

Coup: Tinubu should’ve sent Seyi to Benin Republic not NAF – Wole Soyinka

0

Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to deploy the Nigerian Air Force to Benin Republic following the recent failed coup attempt aimed at removing President Patrice Talon.

Speaking on Monday at the 20th Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) Awards in Lagos, Soyinka suggested—sarcastically—that the president could have simply sent his son, Seyi Tinubu, instead of mobilising military assets.

The literary icon recounted an encounter in Lagos where he observed what he described as an unusually large security formation guarding Seyi Tinubu.

Soyinka said: “President Tinubu didn’t have to send the Air Force and the military to deal with that insurrection. There were easier options. During a visit two months ago, I saw what looked like a full battalion guarding Seyi at a hotel in Ikoyi. There were at least 15 heavily armed operatives—enough to take over a small neighbouring country like Benin.”

He added that the scale of the security presence left him so surprised that he began searching for the National Security Adviser. Soyinka concluded jokingly that the president might as well instruct, ‘Seyi, go and quell the rebellion over there.’

Naira extends depreciation against US dollar

0

The naira continued its downward trend against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Tuesday.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed the currency weakened to N1,454.38 per dollar, compared to N1,451.86 recorded on Monday, marking a N2.52 day-to-day depreciation.

However, the parallel market remained stable, with the naira trading at N1,490 per dollar on both Monday and Tuesday, according to several Bureau De Change operators in Abuja’s Wuse Zone 4.

The development comes as the CBN recently granted full operating licences to only 82 BDCs nationwide, a move expected to reshape activities in the retail forex segment.

This decline persists despite a steady increase in Nigeria’s external reserves, which climbed to $45.32 billion as of December 8.
