We must ask questions- Peter Obi reacts as arrested terrorists’ confessed Govt officials supplied them arms, ammunition

0

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for an immediate, transparent and independent investigation following claims by arrested terror suspects that government officials supplied them with arms and ammunition.

Obi made the demand in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Sunday, reacting to a viral video from Kwara State in which the suspects alleged they received ammunition and logistics support from government officials.

He lamented that despite the enormous sums of money allocated to security over the years, insecurity has continued to worsen across the country in a more brazen manner.

According to him, trillions of naira and billions of dollars have been spent in the name of security, yet terrorism, banditry and kidnapping continue to thrive, raising serious questions about governance and accountability.

Obi referenced a widely cited statement by late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, that any insurgency lasting more than 24 hours suggests government involvement. He also recalled comments by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who once said Nigeria had the capacity to identify and track criminals anywhere in the country but appeared unwilling to do so.

“The government controls telecommunications, intelligence systems and financial trails, yet insecurity persists. This reality raises troubling questions,” Obi said.

He further noted that between 2010 and 2015, Nigeria invested heavily in advanced police communication and tracking infrastructure designed to monitor criminal movements and support rapid response.

Obi questioned why such equipment is no longer effectively deployed and why repeated confessions by terror suspects often implicate government officials.

He also expressed concern over recent abduction cases, citing the release of some schoolchildren without any reported arrests or accountability, while many others remain in captivity.

“When insecurity persists on this scale, it points either to complicity or a failure of leadership,” Obi stated, adding that no society should accept either.

He stressed that the primary responsibility of government is the protection of lives and property, urging Nigeria to embrace leadership marked by competence, transparency and capacity to decisively end insecurity.

RCCG: I was bad, not proud of my past — Pastor Adeboye

0

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has openly admitted that he is not proud of his past, saying his life is a clear testimony of God’s transforming power.

Speaking on Day Five of the Holy Ghost Congress 2025 at Redemption City along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State on Saturday, the 83-year-old cleric said many people never believed he could be saved, let alone become a pastor.

Adeboye told the congregation that his journey proves no one is beyond God’s redemption, urging believers not to give up on anyone, regardless of how far gone they may seem.

“Do you think there is anybody in your family who is too far gone that God cannot save? Do you think there is anybody God cannot turn into a great vessel of honour?” he asked.

He added, “I don’t have time to give many examples, but the man speaking to you now—many people never thought I could be saved. And even if I was saved, they never imagined I could become a pastor.

“You don’t know who is standing before you. I am not proud of my past. If one could be bad, I was bad.”

Pastor Adeboye emphasized that his story should inspire hope and faith in God’s ability to change lives, no matter the circumstances.

A fire outbreak on Saturday afternoon destroyed four out of five residential blocks at a property belonging to a former governor of Zamfara State, Senator Ahmed Yerima, in Asokoro, Abuja.

The incident occurred at a compound on Nelson Mandela Street, where the affected buildings comprise three-bedroom flats. Preliminary reports indicate that the fire originated from solar panels mounted on the roof of one of the blocks before spreading to nearby structures.

Confirming the development, the Head of Public Affairs at the Federal Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa, said the incident was reported at about 1:00 p.m.

Quoting the Head of FEMD’s Search and Rescue Team, Monday Addie, Isa stated that no lives were lost in the fire. However, four of the five blocks were completely destroyed.

She added that several personal belongings, including furniture, clothing, food items and other household effects, were consumed by the blaze.

Emergency personnel from FEMD, the Federal Fire Service, the FCT Fire Service, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the FCT Police Command responded swiftly and were able to contain the fire, preventing further damage.

There’ll be serious consequences- Trump warns after ISIS attack kills Americans in Syria

0

The United States President Donald Trump has vowed a strong response following the killing of three American personnel in Syria in an attack blamed on a suspected Islamic State (IS) operative.

The victims were identified as two United States Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter who were accompanying a joint U.S.-Syrian security convoy. The U.S. military also confirmed that three other American troops were injured during the incident.

According to U.S. Central Command, the attack occurred in Palmyra, a historic city in central Syria, where the team was attending a high-level operational meeting. A lone gunman opened fire on the convoy before being swiftly neutralized by allied forces at the scene.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds later confirmed that the two slain soldiers were members of the Iowa National Guard.

Reacting on his Truth Social platform, President Trump said the attack would not be left unanswered, warning that the perpetrators would face decisive retaliation. “There will be very serious consequences,” he stated.

The incident comes amid renewed diplomatic and security engagement between Washington and Syria’s interim government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, following the removal of former leader Bashar al-Assad. Since the transition, both sides have coordinated limited counterterrorism operations, which Trump indicated would influence the U.S. response.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that partner forces eliminated the attacker, while a senior American official said early intelligence strongly points to Islamic State involvement. The attack reportedly occurred in an area outside the control of the Syrian government.

Although the Islamic State has not officially claimed responsibility, U.S. authorities said investigations are ongoing. The names of the deceased soldiers are being withheld until their families have been fully notified, in line with military protocol.

Shiloh: I warned Nigerians in 2015 of coming troubles, but victory has come—Oyedepo

0

The president and founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo, has said he forewarned Nigerians as far back as 2015 about difficult times ahead, adding that the challenges the nation later faced were not a surprise to him.

Oyedepo made the remarks during Day 5 of the ongoing Shiloh program, themed “Breaking New Ground,” where he reflected on what he described as divine insights received long before events unfolded physically.

According to the cleric, developments in nations and societies are often revealed in the spiritual realm years before they become evident, stressing that spiritual sensitivity is key to understanding global and national trends.

Addressing worshippers, Oyedepo said, “For those who are Nigerians, I told you trouble was coming in 2015. Did it come? I saw it the first time in 1992.”

He explained that his earlier warnings were not meant to spread fear but to prepare believers mentally and spiritually for challenging seasons, noting that insight and discernment help people navigate turbulent times.

Oyedepo further stated that advancements in intelligence and information systems have made it possible for events to be anticipated long before they happen, reinforcing his point about foresight and preparedness.

Despite acknowledging the difficulties Nigeria has faced, the bishop struck an optimistic tone, encouraging worshippers to remain steadfast in faith, as trials often precede breakthroughs.

“But thank God, victory is here,” Oyedepo declared, assuring Nigerians that the season of hardship would give way to triumph and divine intervention.

Tension rises amid calls for war declaration as Nigerian soldiers spend sixth day in Burkina Faso detention

0

Anxieties are mounting in Nigeria as eleven military personnel remain in detention in Burkina Faso for the sixth consecutive day following the impoundment of a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft, sparking heated debate over whether Abuja should consider a tougher response.

The aircraft was en route to Portugal for routine maintenance when it made a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso on December 8 after the crew detected a technical fault shortly after departing Lagos.

Burkinabe authorities, however, detained both the aircraft and its crew, alleging a violation of national airspace. Burkina Faso’s state-owned news agency, Agence d’Information du Burkina, cited a statement from the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), which claimed investigations showed the aircraft lacked authorization to fly over Burkinabe territory.

The AES bloc described the incident as a breach of sovereignty and said it condemned the action “with the utmost firmness.”

In response, the Nigerian Air Force insisted the diversion was carried out in strict compliance with international aviation safety standards, explaining that the crew opted for the nearest suitable airfield after identifying a technical issue mid-flight. The Air Force also assured Nigerians that the detained personnel are safe and being treated cordially.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are ongoing. The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that Nigeria’s embassy in Ouagadougou is actively engaging Burkinabe authorities to secure the release of the aircraft and its crew.

“The Embassy of Nigeria in Ouagadougou is engaging with the host authorities to secure their release,” the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said.

Despite these assurances, frustration is growing at home. Former senator and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Ayodele Arise has urged President Bola Tinubu to consider military action should diplomatic talks fail.

Speaking on an Arise TV program on Saturday, Ayodele Arise argued that Nigeria must be ready to take decisive steps to protect its soldiers, even as it grapples with internal security challenges. He suggested that the mere signal of military readiness could pressure Burkina Faso into releasing the detained personnel.

“We should let them know that they can’t be messing with our country,” Arise said, stressing that while good neighborly relations matter, Nigeria must also defend its sovereignty and armed forces.

The standoff comes at a delicate moment in regional relations, with Burkina Faso currently under military rule and no longer a member of ECOWAS. Security analysts warn that how the crisis is resolved could have lasting implications for Nigeria’s diplomatic and military engagement with Sahel states.

For now, Abuja says it remains committed to a diplomatic solution, even as public pressure for a stronger response continues to grow.
