Tension as US conducts intelligence surveillance flights over Nigeria

0

Fear grips Nigerians as Flight tracking data have revealed that the United States has been carrying out intelligence-gathering surveillance flights over large parts of Nigeria since late November, according to a report by Reuters.

The report suggests that the operations point to renewed security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, coming at a time of heightened diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

Although the exact purpose of the flights could not be independently confirmed, Reuters noted that they followed comments made in November by US President Donald Trump, who threatened possible military intervention in Nigeria over what he described as the government’s failure to curb violence against Christian communities.

The surveillance activities also come months after a US pilot working for a missionary organization was kidnapped in neighboring Niger, further raising regional security concerns.

Reuters said flight tracking data for December showed that the contractor-operated aircraft typically departs from Ghana, flies over Nigerian airspace, and returns to Accra. The aircraft is reportedly operated by Mississippi-based Tenax Aerospace, a company known for providing special mission aircraft and working closely with the US military.

Liam Karr, Africa team lead for the Critical Threats Project at the American Enterprise Institute, said his analysis of the flight data indicated that the operation was being run from Accra, a recognized logistics hub for US military activities in Africa.

“In recent weeks we’ve seen a resumption of intelligence and surveillance flights in Nigeria,” Karr told Reuters.

He added that the flights appeared to signal efforts by Washington to rebuild its intelligence capabilities in the region following Niger’s decision last year to order US troops to leave a key air base and instead seek security support from Russia.

2027: Late Buhari’s state PDP collapses structure for ADC to unseat Tinubu

0

Several members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State have defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state of the late former president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

A chieftain of the ADC, Austin Okai, disclosed the development in a Facebook post on Monday, saying the defections cut across all levels of the PDP’s structure in the state.

According to Okai, the movement began at the polling unit level and extended through wards and local government areas to the state level. He wrote, “Katsina PDP collapsed structures from polling units, ward, LGA, and state to ADC coalition.”

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the ADC has continued to record a surge in defections from major political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Recently, about 100,000 supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Lega Local Government Area of Kebbi State also defected to the ADC, further strengthening the party’s growing presence across the country.

I won’t dignify the devil—Pastor Chris Okafor addresses marriage scandal with Doris Ogala saga

0

Founder of Grace Nation Bible Ministry, Pastor Chris Okafor, has spoken publicly for the first time amid the controversy surrounding his alleged relationship with Nollywood actress Doris Ogala.

Ogala was arrested at her residence on Saturday, December 20, 2025, after accusing the cleric of failing to fulfill an alleged promise of marriage.

Addressing congregants during his marriage thanksgiving service on Sunday, Okafor, in a video that has since gone viral, dismissed the allegations and insisted that anyone making claims must substantiate them.

The pastor said he chose to remain silent initially, claiming God instructed him not to respond publicly. He added that although it was painful to be misrepresented, he would allow due process to take its course.

According to him, the matter is already before the authorities, making it inappropriate for him to speak openly on the issue.

“There is a law in this country that works, and we are following it. Whatever anyone says, they must prove it in a court of law. We are not quiet; we are praying and following the right process. The truth will come out.

“We will never dignify a mad devil by replying. That would amount to glorifying the devil. Hear me and hear me well: since I grew up, I have known this man (God) as my father, and nobody can tell me anything about him. I have known him as my father, and I know who he is. No outsider knows my father more than I do.

“Why we do what we do, in the place of prayer, study, wait on the Lord, and go by the instructions of what he says we should do, there’s a law in this country that works, and we follow the law. And the law is taking its course. Everything you say to anybody, you must prove it in the law court. So, don’t worry, we are not quiet. We’re praying, and we’re following the mature way we should follow. The truth will come out.

“Because the authorities are in the matter, I cannot say it in public. You will be surprised about the people that are involved. I got reports; you will be surprised about the people that are behind the scene, and you will shout because it’s before the authority. I will not jeopardize the investigation and the court process that has ensued. He that alleged must prove,” he stated.

Okafor further hinted that investigations were ongoing and that those allegedly behind the controversy would eventually be exposed, stressing that he would not jeopardize the investigation or court proceedings.

“He that alleged must prove,” he reiterated.

Nigerian Newssphere recalls that Ogala’s arrest sparked widespread reactions on social media, drawing comments from fans and celebrities alike.

Following her arrest, a popular Nigerian influencer called for her release and threatened to release what he described as incriminating evidence against Pastor Okafor and some of his associates.

Trump recalls US ambassador to Nigeria amid diplomatic row

0

Amid a diplomatic row with the Nigerian government, President Donald Trump has recalled the United States Ambassador to the country, Richard Mills, as part of a wide-ranging diplomatic reshuffle affecting several U.S. foreign missions across the globe.

According to The Guardian UK, the shake-up spans multiple regions, with Africa recording the highest number of affected countries. Nigeria is among at least 15 African nations whose ambassadors have been recalled. Others include Algeria, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Gabon, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Madagascar, Mauritius, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, and Uganda.

The diplomatic changes also extend to the Asia-Pacific region, where envoys to Fiji, Laos, the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and Vietnam were recalled. In Europe, ambassadors to Armenia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Slovakia were affected, while Guatemala and Suriname experienced similar changes in the Western Hemisphere.

Reports indicate that the affected chiefs of mission were notified last week that their postings would officially end in January.

Nigerian Newssphere recalls that Mills was confirmed as U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria in May. His recall comes amid strained relations between the United States and Nigeria, particularly over visa restrictions and security-related concerns.

Last week, Mills met with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, to discuss bilateral cooperation. The meeting followed comments by U.S. Congressman Riley Moore, who stated that both countries were close to finalizing a strategic security framework to address terrorism in Nigeria.

U.S. State Department officials clarified that the recalled ambassadors are not being dismissed from the Foreign Service, noting that they will return to Washington and may be reassigned to other roles if they choose.

2027 presidency: Amaechi posters surface across Kaduna

0

Residents of Kaduna were at the weekend greeted by a sudden surge of political posters bearing the image of former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, a development that has sparked renewed speculation about early manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The colourful A2-sized posters, which appeared overnight across several parts of the Kaduna metropolis, portrayed Amaechi as a leading opposition figure, with bold inscriptions such as “the only person to be trusted” and “the only man for the job.” The messages also highlighted themes of unity, equality, stability and development.

The posters were prominently displayed along major routes, including Ahmadu Bello Way, Ali Akilu Way, areas around the Kaduna State Government House, and the busy Kawo Bridge axis leading towards Zaria.

Their appearance drew considerable public attention, with motorists and pedestrians slowing down to observe the displays, particularly around Kawo Bridge, where vehicular movement was briefly affected in the early hours of the day.

Amaechi, who holds the traditional title of Dan Amanan Kasar Hausa of Daura, has enjoyed a long political career. He served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007, Governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015, and Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2023.

Political observers in Kaduna interpret the poster campaign as a possible attempt by Amaechi’s supporters to test the political climate in the North, widely regarded as a decisive voting bloc in any presidential election.

Although the former Rivers State governor has yet to make any formal declaration, the posters have fuelled conversations about a potential renewed presidential ambition and a possible opposition challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

Amaechi had previously contested the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary in 2022, where he finished second behind Tinubu, placing ahead of then Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and former Senate President Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan.

Report any MRS filling stations selling fuel above N739 per liter—Dangote Refinery to Nigerians

0

Dangote Refinery has urged Nigerians to report any MRS filling station outlets nationwide selling fuel above the N739 per liter announced price.

The 650,000-barrel-per-day disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

The refinery insisted that its petrol being at retail outlets remain N739 per liter while the gantry price is N699.

It further called on other filling station owners to patronize its refined petroleum products at the N699 rate.

“We also call on other petrol station operators to patronize our products so that the benefits of this price reduction can be passed on to Nigerians across all outlets, ensuring broad-based relief and a more stable downstream market.”

Recall that Aliko Dangote, the president of Dangote Refinery, had pegged the retail price of his petrol at a maximum of N740. DAILY POST reports that MRS filling and other filling stations had reduced fuel prices to between N739 and N912 per liter in Abuja.

However, reports emerged that some MRS filling stations were selling above the N739 per liter announced price benchmark.

AFCON 2025: Hugo Broos snubs South Africa, Nigeria, predicts favourites to win trophy

0

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has overlooked Bafana Bafana and traditional heavyweights such as Nigeria and defending champions Ivory Coast, tipping Morocco as the outright favourites to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Broos said the Atlas Lions possess the quality and depth needed to lift the trophy when the tournament takes place in January 2026, especially with the advantage of playing on home soil.

Speaking ahead of the competition, Broos cautioned against labeling South Africa as contenders, noting that the upcoming AFCON would be more demanding than the previous edition in Ivory Coast.

“It’s always very dangerous to put yourself as favourites,” Broos said, according to Flashscore. “This tournament will be tougher than the last one. If you have to name a favourite, I think it’s Morocco.

“They are a very good team and they are playing at home,” he added.

Morocco currently sit top of Group A with three points and will face Zambia and Mali in their remaining group matches, after opening their campaign with a victory over Comoros.

US visa ban: It’s not about penalizing Nigerians—Ambassador Mills

0

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has explained the reasons behind the recent visa restrictions affecting Nigerians, stressing that the measures are part of standard security procedures and not directed at punishing Nigerian citizens.

Mills spoke on Sunday in Abuja at a press briefing held during the visit of a United States Congressional Delegation (CODEL). He said the restrictions were introduced to strengthen security protocols and ensure more rigorous screening of visa applicants.

According to him, the presidential proclamation, which takes effect on January 1, 2026, applies to specific visa categories and is designed to guarantee credible information and proper vetting in the visa application process.

“The proclamation is not about penalizing Nigerians but about ensuring that visa processes are secure and reliable,” Mills stated.

He added that the policy clearly outlines the visa categories that may be affected and provides exemptions for certain groups, including holders of official and diplomatic passports, as well as individuals travelling for religious purposes.

The ambassador urged visa applicants and members of the public to visit the official U.S. Embassy website for detailed information on the proclamation, affected visa categories, and exemptions. He also advised those seeking clarification to make use of the embassy’s official communication channels.

Also speaking at the briefing, U.S. Congressman and head of the delegation Bill Huizenga said visa reviews and restrictions are routine global practices aimed at promoting cooperation and compliance, rather than targeting citizens.

Huizenga noted that such measures usually focus on improving government systems and processes and are commonly applied in various countries around the world.
