South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has overlooked Bafana Bafana and traditional heavyweights such as Nigeria and defending champions Ivory Coast, tipping Morocco as the outright favourites to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Broos said the Atlas Lions possess the quality and depth needed to lift the trophy when the tournament takes place in January 2026, especially with the advantage of playing on home soil.
Speaking ahead of the competition, Broos cautioned against labeling South Africa as contenders, noting that the upcoming AFCON would be more demanding than the previous edition in Ivory Coast.
“It’s always very dangerous to put yourself as favourites,” Broos said, according to Flashscore. “This tournament will be tougher than the last one. If you have to name a favourite, I think it’s Morocco.
“They are a very good team and they are playing at home,” he added.
Morocco currently sit top of Group A with three points and will face Zambia and Mali in their remaining group matches, after opening their campaign with a victory over Comoros.
