BREAKING: AFCON: Lookman’s goal seals 2–1 victory for Nigeria Against Tanzania

0

Nigeria opened their campaign at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco with a 2–1 win over Tanzania, securing all three points in their first group match.

The Super Eagles took the lead through Ajayi before Ademola Lookman doubled Nigeria’s advantage with a well-taken finish. Tanzania mounted a brief comeback when Mombwa pulled one back in the 50th minute, raising hopes of a turnaround.

However, those hopes were quickly dashed as Lookman struck again just two minutes later, restoring Nigeria’s two-goal cushion and ultimately sealing the victory.

The result gives Nigeria a strong start to the tournament as they continue their quest for continental glory.

I’ll have no choice but to leave PDP – Former gov says amid rumoured plans to join ADC

0

The main opposition party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), may lose one of its key figures, as former Jigawa State Governor Alhaji Sule Lamido has said he may leave the party if its internal crisis is not resolved.

Alhaji Sule Lamido stated that if a solution is not found to the problems within the PDP, he would consider aligning with another political party.

The former governor expressed deep disappointment over what he described as deliberate attempts by some individuals to destroy the PDP.

Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service monitored by our correspondent in Kaduna on Tuesday, the former Jigawa State governor said that if things continue not to go the right way, he would take whatever decision he considers best for himself.

He lamented what he described as calculated efforts by some elements within the party to weaken and eventually destroy the PDP.

According to him, the failure of the party leadership to urgently address the deepening divisions may force him to reconsider his political future.

“If we cannot find solutions to the problems facing the PDP, I will have no option but to look elsewhere,” Lamido said.

The elder statesman noted that the PDP, which once served as a unifying platform for Nigerians, is now plagued by internal wrangling that has left loyal members frustrated and disillusioned.

He warned that continued infighting could further erode the party’s strength ahead of future elections, stressing that decisive steps must be taken to restore unity and discipline.

Lamido added that while he remains committed to democratic ideals, he would ultimately take a decision that best serves his political principles and personal conviction if the crisis persists.

This is coming amid reports indicating that the former governor is set to join the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

Wike wants to hold PDP for Tinubu, I already made $1m when he left law school—Gov Makinde

Wike Minister of FCT

Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has launched a fresh attack on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over the lingering crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing him of openly working against the party’s interests.

Makinde made the remarks during a media chat with journalists, where he recounted a recent meeting involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Wike, and the President’s Chief of Staff.

According to the Oyo governor, Wike shocked those present when he allegedly declared his intention to “hold PDP” for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The real issue is that I was with President Tinubu and Wike, and I’m saying this in an open chat. The President’s Chief of Staff was also in that meeting,” Makinde said.

“Wike said he would hold PDP for President Tinubu in 2027. I was in shock. When we got to the veranda, I asked him, ‘Wike, did we agree to this?’”

Makinde stressed that while Wike has the constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice, openly pledging PDP’s support to a rival party’s president was unacceptable and damaging to the opposition party.

“He wants to support the President in the 2027 elections. That’s fine. It’s his right to do that,” Makinde said. “But dragging the PDP into it is a different matter.”

The Oyo governor also dismissed suggestions that his criticism of Wike was personal, insisting he had no interest in engaging in political feuds.

“I don’t beef anybody,” Makinde said, while making reference to his personal achievements, noting that he had built a successful career long before entering politics

“Within one year, I made $1 million in my pocket. I was 29 in 1997. At that time, Wike perhaps had just left law school, and his next job was as a local government chairman,” he stated.

Makinde’s comments have added fresh fuel to the deepening crisis within the PDP, which has been grappling with internal divisions following the 2023 general elections and Wike’s continued alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress-led federal government.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a key figure in the G5 governors’ bloc, has repeatedly defended his cooperation with President Tinubu, insisting it is in the national interest.

NIN, CAC registration numbers to replace Tax IDs naationwide from 2026—FIRS

0

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) will serve as the Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) for individual taxpayers from 2026, while registered businesses will use their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration numbers as their official tax identifiers.

The clarification was made on Monday via the agency’s official X handle as part of a public awareness campaign on the newly enacted tax laws.

According to the FIRS, individuals will no longer be required to obtain a separate Tax ID, as their NIN—issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)—will automatically function as their tax identifier. Similarly, companies and registered businesses will rely solely on their CAC registration numbers for tax purposes under the new system.

The announcement follows public concerns over provisions in the new tax laws that mandate the use of a Tax ID for certain transactions, including the operation and ownership of bank accounts.

Explaining the policy, the FIRS noted that the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA), which takes effect in January 2026, reinforces the requirement for a Tax ID in specified transactions. However, the agency stressed that the requirement is not new, having existed since the Finance Act of 2019, but is now being streamlined and strengthened.

“The Tax ID unifies all Tax Identification Numbers previously issued by the FIRS and State Internal Revenue Services into a single identifier,” the agency said.

“For individuals, your NIN automatically serves as your tax ID, while for registered companies, your CAC registration number is used. There is no need for a physical card, as the Tax ID is a unique number directly linked to your identity,” the FIRS added.

Christmas: US offers $3,000 incentive for undocumented immigrants to leave

0

The United States government has unveiled a Christmas-season initiative offering financial incentives to undocumented immigrants who agree to leave the country voluntarily, warning that those who decline could face deportation.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that undocumented immigrants who enroll in the program before the end of the year will receive a $3,000 cash incentive and free airfare to their home countries.

According to the department, participants must sign up through the CBP Home app to qualify for the offer. DHS added that those who use the platform may also receive waivers for certain civil fines or penalties related to overstaying or failure to depart the country.

The department disclosed that since January 2025, about 1.9 million undocumented immigrants have voluntarily left the United States, with tens of thousands making use of the CBP Home program.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the incentive has been increased for the Christmas period to encourage more voluntary departures.

“During the Christmas season, the U.S. taxpayer is tripling the incentive to leave voluntarily for those in the country illegally by offering a $3,000 exit bonus, but only until the end of the year,” Noem said. She added that those who refuse the offer risk arrest, deportation, and a permanent ban from re-entering the United States.

DHS explained that interested individuals are required to download the CBP Home app, submit their personal details, and await processing, which the department described as quick and seamless. The agency noted that it will handle all travel arrangements for successful applicants.

The department further warned that undocumented immigrants who ignore the offer will be subject to arrest, forced removal, and permanent ineligibility to return to the United States.

The naira appreciated against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Monday, starting the week on a positive note ahead of the Yuletide season.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the local currency strengthened to N1,456.56 per dollar on Monday, compared with N1,464.49 recorded on Friday, December 19, 2025.

This represents a gain of N7.93 for the naira against the dollar, marking its first appreciation at the official market since December 15, Nigerian Newsphere reports.

Meanwhile, the naira remained unchanged at the parallel market, trading at N1,500 per dollar on Monday, according to several Bureau De Change operators in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja.

The currency movement comes amid sustained external buffers, with Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves standing at $44.66 billion as of last Friday.

Fans demand reversal as Twitch suspends Carter Efe after historic Davido livestream

0

Popular Nigerian comedian and content creator Carter Efe has had his Twitch account temporarily suspended, sparking widespread reactions from fans just days after his record-breaking livestream with Afrobeats superstar Davido.

The highly publicized livestream, held on December 17, 2025, attracted massive online engagement and propelled Carter Efe to become Africa’s most-followed Twitch streamer, amassing over 405,000 followers in a short period.

Announcing the development on Monday, the comedian disclosed that Twitch had imposed a four-month suspension on his account for alleged violations of the platform’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. Twitch, however, did not specify the exact nature of the violations.

The suspension comes shortly after Carter Efe overtook other prominent Nigerian content creators, including Shank Comics, and delivered one of the most-watched livestreams on the platform alongside Davido.

In response, fans and supporters took to social media to express disappointment and solidarity with the comedian, praising him as a “joy giver” and calling on Twitch to reconsider or review the decision.

Although online speculation suggests the suspension may have followed mass reporting linked to comments or on-stream antics during the livestream, claims of additional bans on other platforms have been dismissed as untrue.

The development has dampened the mood for many fans, especially during the festive season, with growing calls for a swift resolution and reinstatement of Carter Efe’s account.

Fear spreads in Lagos as security operatives arrest two suspected ISWAP terrorists

0

Residents of Lagos have been thrown into anxiety following the arrest of two men suspected to be members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the state.

According to PREMIUM TIMES, the suspects, identified as Modu Gana and Ibrahim Dugge, were arrested on Sunday, December 21, by operatives of the State Security Service (SSS).

A security source familiar with the operation disclosed that the arrests took place around 8:45 a.m. in the Apapa area of Lagos. The source confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and are being interrogated.

Investigations revealed that the arrests were based on intelligence reports indicating that the suspects had recently relocated from Nigeria’s conflict-ridden Northeast region to Lagos.

Attempts to obtain official confirmation from the SSS were unsuccessful. A media unit official of the agency said the incident had not yet been formally reported to them. Since the redeployment of its former spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, the SSS has adopted a low-profile media strategy, which it says is aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness.

As of the time of filing this report, the reason for the suspects’ presence in Lagos remains unclear. There is also no immediate evidence suggesting that they were planning attacks in the commercial hub.

However, security analysts have warned that ISWAP has been making efforts to expand its operations beyond its traditional strongholds in the Northeast, raising concerns about potential security threats in other parts of the country.
