The Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has reiterated that the Federal Government will proceed with the implementation of the new tax laws from January 1, 2026, despite growing public criticism.

Oyedele said the reforms are designed to ease the financial burden on Nigerians while stimulating economic growth and promoting inclusivity.

He made this known while speaking to journalists after members of the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee (NTPIC), led by Joseph Tegbe, paid a visit to President Bola Tinubu at his Lagos residence.

According to him, the government remains committed to the timeline already announced.

“The plan to commence the two remaining new tax laws on January 1, 2026, will proceed as scheduled because these reforms are meant to provide relief to Nigerians,” Oyedele said.

He explained that under the reforms, about 98 percent of workers at the lower end of the income scale would either pay no personal income tax or face reduced tax obligations. He added that roughly 97 percent of small businesses would be exempt from corporate income tax and VAT withholding tax, while larger companies would also benefit from lower tax rates.

“The whole idea is to promote economic growth, inclusiveness, and shared prosperity for our people. We are encouraged by the progress so far and are looking forward to January 1, 2026,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Newssphere reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and former Senate Leader Senator Ali Ndume have supported the January 2026 implementation date amid fresh controversy over discrepancies between the gazetted version of the tax laws and the copy passed by the National Assembly.

In response to the controversy, the National Assembly announced on Friday that it has directed the Clerk of the National Assembly to re-gazette the new tax laws to address the identified issues.

Mo Sallah’s penalty made his country, Egypt, become the first team to secure a place in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a slim 1–0 victory over South Africa on Friday evening.

The Pharaohs continued their perfect start to Group A after opening the tournament with a 2–1 win against Zimbabwe. Their latest triumph came courtesy of a first-half penalty calmly converted by Mohamed Salah.

Despite being reduced to 10 men before the break after defender Mohamed Hany was sent off, the North Africans showed resilience and discipline to protect their lead and claim all three points.

The result guarantees Egypt a spot in the knockout stage ahead of their final group match against Angola. South Africa, meanwhile, will look to revive their campaign when they face Zimbabwe in their last Group A fixture.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has married Queen Zaynab Ngohemba-George Akume Dajoh.

The development was announced on Friday by Abraham Double-D Dajoh in a Facebook post on behalf of the Dajoh family. In the statement, the family formally welcomed Queen Zaynab into their fold and congratulated the SGF on the new union.

“We, the entire Dajoh family, happily join our daddy, uncle and brother, His Excellency, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume Jugu Dajoh, in welcoming his new and uncommon wife, Queen Zaynab Ngohemba-George Akume Dajoh, into the Dajoh family,” the post read.

The family also thanked supporters of the SGF for their continued goodwill, urging them to sustain their support as he embarks on this new chapter of his life. They further wished Nigerians a joyful Christmas celebration and a prosperous New Year.

In the message, Queen Zaynab was welcomed to Benue State, described as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” as well as to Mbakor, regarded as the seat of leadership of the Tiv nation, and to the Dajoh family home.

Queen Zaynab, formerly known as Zaynab Otiti Obanor, was previously married to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi. Their marriage was contracted in a traditional ceremony on March 12, 2016, in Benin City, Edo State, followed by a thanksgiving and reception at the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State. The union later ended in August 2017.

Akume’s marriage comes amid heightened national attention on Nigeria’s security situation, following recent developments including reported United States airstrikes on terrorist targets in the country’s northwest and subsequent public anxiety triggered by explosions in parts of Kwara State.

It was a wrong target- Makama faults US airstrikes in Nigeria

0

A security analyst, Zagazola Makama, has criticized the recent airstrikes carried out by the United States military in Sokoto State, describing the operation as a case of mistaken targeting.

The US military launched multiple airstrikes on Christmas night, reportedly aimed at terrorist elements in Sokoto State, an action that sparked fear and confusion among residents.

A viral video circulating online showed panic in Jabo community, located in Tambuwal Local Government Area, after one of the strikes reportedly landed in the area and burst into flames.

As of the time of reporting, details of the operation remain unclear, with no casualties officially confirmed.

Reacting on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Makama stated that the airstrikes hit a farmland and had no effect on insurgent groups operating in Nigeria.

He wrote: “Those asking for our opinion on U.S. strike in Sokoto. Well, the bombs dropped in a relatively safe part of Sokoto State with no impact.

“Jabo is a farming community under Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, and it has no single record of ISIS and ISWAP activity.

“We welcome U.S. interventions to assist Nigeria, but certainly Jabo community in Sokoto was a wrong target for ISWAP, Boko Haram or ISIS, who are known to be operating in North East Nigeria.

“Even JNIM, also known as Lakurawa, do not have any base in the North West. The area of the strikes is predominantly about 98 per cent Muslim and does not pose any threat of Christian genocide. It is simply a case of bandits terrorising Muslims.

“The strikes, and more to come, are a welcome development as it will send a strong message”, he said.

BREAKING: Panic in Kwara as explosions hit Offa hours after US Airstrikes in Sokoto

Residents of Offa, a community in Kwara State, were thrown into panic on Thursday night following explosions that rocked parts of the town.

The blasts, which occurred around midnight at two separate locations, damaged several properties and caused widespread confusion. One explosion was reported near the Eid praying ground area, while the second took place close to Solid Worth Hotel, about a five-minute walk from the first site.

The incident came just hours after the United States carried out airstrikes on ISIS targets in northwest Nigeria, raising concerns among residents. However, authorities have not yet confirmed any link between the Offa explosions and the US military operation, and the exact cause of the blasts remains unclear.

Confirming the development, the Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Chairman of Offa Local Government, Abiola Azeez Babatunde, said the council was aware of the reports.

“The Offa Local Government has taken note of reports circulating regarding a suspected ordnance-related incident that occurred in the precinct of Offa Yidi Praying Ground on December 25, 2025,” he said.

According to him, security agencies have cordoned off the affected areas to enable a thorough investigation.

The incident has heightened security concerns, coming days after an explosive device was detonated at a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, an attack that reportedly claimed at least five lives and left over 30 people injured.

US airstrikes in Nigeria: We were too late in Rwanda, South Sudan

A United States Congressman, Bill Huizenga, has described the recent airstrikes against terrorists in Nigeria’s Northwest as clear evidence that the United States is taking insecurity and killings in the country seriously.

Huizenga made the statement on Friday via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account while reacting to the coordinated precision strikes carried out by the US military in Nigeria.

According to the lawmaker, the operation was aimed at protecting Christians from attacks by radical Islamist groups operating in parts of the country.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that US President Donald Trump had earlier announced that American forces had conducted military strikes in Nigeria.

In his post, Huizenga wrote: “Today, in coordination with the Nigerian government, President Trump and the US military took decisive action to protect Christians from radical Islamists in Nigeria.

“The Congressional Delegation I led to Nigeria this past weekend provided insight that some attitudes inside the Nigerian Government are beginning to turn in favor of protecting Christians in addition to taking actions against those terrorizing Christians and moderate Muslims.

“As I have said previously, the US was too late in Rwanda and too late in South Sudan.

“This strike demonstrates the United States is taking the targeted killings in Nigeria seriously.”

“I’ve stopped getting women pregnant”- 2Baba

Veteran Nigerian singer Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Face or 2Baba, has made a candid public confession about his personal life.

The award-winning musician, who is widely known for having children with multiple women outside his marriage, spoke in Benin City during the MC EdoPikin Undiluted with StarBoy and Legends show.

Addressing the audience moments before his performance, 2Baba said he felt the need to “set the record straight,” revealing that he had put an end to impregnating women.

“But see, I get confession. I dey make this confession everywhere I go now to set the record straight. I don stop to dey do that kind of thing, I don stop to dey give belle anyhow. I swear, ask anybody now, they will tell you that I’m innocent,” he said.

DAILY POST recalls that 2Baba’s first baby mama is Sumbo Adeoye, with whom he has two sons, Zion and Nino. Their relationship reportedly ended around 2009 after revelations of his involvement with other women.

He also had three children with his second baby mama, Pero Adeniyi, between 2006 and 2012.

With his publicly recognised wife, actress Annie Macaulay-Idibia, the singer has two daughters. Their marriage lasted from 2012 until their divorce in 2025.

More recently, 2Baba welcomed another child with his new partner, Natasha Osawaru, with whom he is said to have entered a controversial marriage.

A video of the singer making the statement has since surfaced online.

US airstrikes in Sokoto: Former Gov, Tambuwal outlines next steps, urges calm

Former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has appealed for restraint and calm among residents of communities affected by the recent United States airstrikes in the state.

Tension reportedly gripped Jabo town in Tambuwal Local Government Area on Thursday night after the US military carried out air operations in the area.

The strikes followed an announcement by former US President Donald Trump of a large-scale operation in Nigeria aimed at eliminating terrorists responsible for widespread violence.

Reacting to the development, Tambuwal commended the collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, describing it as a critical step toward ending terrorism in the northern region.

In a statement, he said: “I have noted the reports concerning an airstrike carried out as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts through cooperation between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States. I urge our communities to remain calm and law abiding as relevant authorities clarify the circumstances surrounding the operation.

I wish to assure the people of Sokoto South that I am in active talks with relevant security authorities to obtain full details and ensure that all necessary safeguards are upheld.

It is important to reassure the public that counterterrorism operations are targeted at criminal and terrorist elements who threaten our collective safety, and not at innocent civilians who are themselves victims of insecurity. The protection of civilian lives remains paramount and remains central to all legitimate security operations.

I commend the courage and professionalism of our military and security forces, who continue to work tirelessly, often in collaboration with international partners, to confront terrorism and banditry under extremely challenging conditions. Their sacrifice and commitment to restoring peace and stability deserve our full support and cooperation.

“I also call on community leaders, traditional institutions, and residents to continue working closely with security agencies by sharing credible information and resisting misinformation that could heighten fear or tension.

Together, through unity, vigilance, and support for lawful security efforts, we will overcome the forces of terror and secure lasting peace for Sokoto State and Nigeria at large.

US airstrikes: Unlikely to affect Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid—Jega

0

Mahmud Jega, a news analyst with Arise Television, has stated that President Bola Tinubu should not be held accountable for the recent United States military strikes in western Nigeria.

Speaking on Friday during Arise Television’s Morning Show, Jega assessed the implications of the US action and Nigeria’s response, noting that the strikes are unlikely to significantly affect the 2027 elections unless the security situation worsens in the coming weeks.

Jega highlighted that the Nigerian government had previously countered what it described as a misleading narrative from the administration of US President Donald Trump. According to him, the presidency emphasized that while Nigeria faces terrorism, banditry, and widespread insecurity, these challenges should not be framed as an interreligious conflict or a genocide targeting any religious group.

He praised the Tinubu administration for responding appropriately, sending delegations to the United States for discussions, though the details of these talks remain confidential.

Jega explained, “No, I don’t think many people will blame the Tinubu administration for what is happening now because President Donald Trump, when he first addressed the threats, was acting independently, not in coordination with Nigeria’s government. The Nigerian presidency immediately clarified that while we have serious terrorism and insecurity issues, it is not an interreligious war or genocide.

“The Tinubu administration did well to push back against the Trump administration’s narrative and to send delegations to the US to negotiate. We don’t know the full details of these conversations, but the current developments are likely a result of those engagements.

“I don’t think anyone will hold Tinubu responsible for the US strikes. For now, it’s unlikely to impact 2027 election calculations, unless the situation escalates. Ultimately, Nigerians will welcome any intelligence or material support from the Americans and other Western partners to help fight terrorism and insecurity across the country.”

Akpabio, Abbas orders re-gazetting of new tax laws amid controversy

The leadership of the National Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, has instructed the Clerk of the National Assembly to re-gazette Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws amid rising controversy.

The directive was revealed on Friday in a statement by the House of Representatives’ spokesperson, Hon. Akin Rotimi, who said the National Assembly had begun a review of the tax laws to address issues raised publicly.

Rotimi explained that the move to re-gazette the laws aims to provide clarity and ensure accuracy in the legislative record, emphasizing that the process is being carried out strictly within the National Assembly’s constitutional and statutory powers.

He further noted that the leadership has ordered the re-gazetting of the Acts and the issuance of Certified True Copies of the versions officially passed by both chambers. According to him, this step is purely administrative and is meant to properly authenticate and reflect the legislative decisions of the National Assembly.

“In the course of this review, and in the interest of clarity, accuracy, and the integrity of the legislative record, the leadership of the National Assembly, under the President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, has directed the Clerk to the National Assembly to re-gazette the Acts and issue Certified True Copies of the versions duly passed by both Chambers of the National Assembly. This administrative step is intended solely to authenticate and accurately reflect the legislative decisions of the National Assembly,” the statement reads.

The directive follows concerns raised by lawmaker Abdulsamman Dasuki, who highlighted discrepancies between the tax laws passed by the National Assembly and the versions that were gazetted. His claims sparked widespread public criticism and debates over the integrity of the legislative process.

The revised tax laws are scheduled to take effect from January 2026.
