US airstrikes: Sokoto Prison not safe for Nnamdi Kanu—Ejimakor makes demand

0

Aloy Ejimakor, legal consultant to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has reacted to the recent United States military airstrikes targeting terrorists in Sokoto State, saying the development confirms that the state is unsafe for his client.

Ejimakor argued that the US military action underscores longstanding security concerns in Sokoto, where Kanu is currently being held following his conviction.

Recall that last month, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on charges related to terrorism. The Nigerian government prosecuted the IPOB leader over his agitation for the actualization of a sovereign Biafra state.

After his conviction, the court ordered that Kanu be remanded at the Sokoto Custodial Centre.

However, while Kanu is in custody there, the United States military reportedly carried out a precision airstrike on terrorist targets in Sokoto State.

Reacting in a post on X, Ejimakor said the airstrike further proves that Sokoto is not a secure environment for Kanu’s detention and called for his immediate transfer.

“The US military strike against terrorists in Sokoto has finally confirmed that Sokoto is riddled with terrorists and was never a safe place of custody for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” he wrote.

“It is now more urgent that he be transferred outside the terrorist belt in Northern Nigeria.”

Kill them all, they’ve killed Americans—US Senator Cotton praises Trump over airstrikes against Terrorists in Nigeria

United States Senator Tom Cotton has lauded President Donald Trump for authorizing recent US military airstrikes against terrorists in Nigeria.

Nigerian Newssphere  earlier reported that the US military, acting on President Trump’s directive, carried out airstrikes on terrorist targets in Sokoto State on Christmas night.

While the exact number of terrorists killed in the operation has yet to be confirmed, the Federal Government of Nigeria stated that the strikes were conducted as part of a cooperative effort between Nigeria and the United States.

Reacting to the development, Senator Cotton took to X to commend President Trump, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and American troops involved in the operation.

According to him, the targeted terrorists were responsible not only for the persecution of Christians but also for the killing of several Americans.

“I commend President Trump, Secretary Hegseth, and our brave troops for these strikes against bloodthirsty ISIS savages who are not only persecuting Christians but also have killed many Americans,” Cotton wrote.

You lied, we’ve lost our sovereignty—Sowore accuses FG over US Airstrikes in Nigeria

Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that recent United States military airstrikes in Sokoto State were carried out without the consent of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The U.S. military reportedly conducted airstrikes targeting terrorists in parts of Sokoto on Christmas night. Former U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.S. Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, announced the operation in separate social media posts on Thursday.

Following the reports, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the airstrikes, stating that the operation was carried out through cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.

However, Sowore disputed the government’s position in a statement posted on his official X account, insisting that Nigeria’s sovereignty had been breached. He argued that the strikes were not authorized by the Nigerian government and described official claims of a joint operation as misleading.

According to Sowore, the nature of the airstrike, which he said affected a village in Sokoto State, showed a lack of regard for Nigeria and its citizens by the U.S. leadership under which the operation occurred. He further criticized the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of lacking the capacity to protect the country’s sovereignty.

Sowore maintained that Nigeria had been reduced to a passive observer while foreign forces carried out military actions on its territory and stressed that only strong and informed leadership could effectively safeguard the nation and its people.

The United States Department of Defense has released video footage showing military air strikes carried out in Sokoto State, northwest Nigeria.

Earlier, the U.S. Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, confirmed that the air strikes targeted terrorists, describing the operation as deadly, while acknowledging that innocent Nigerians were killed in the process.

Subsequently, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) said the strikes were conducted on the directive of U.S. President Donald Trump and in coordination with Nigerian authorities.

According to AFRICOM, the operation followed warnings issued by the U.S. leader to armed groups to halt attacks on civilians, particularly Christians in northern Nigeria.

In a post on X, AFRICOM stated:

“At the direction of the President of the United States and the Secretary of War, and in coordination with Nigerian authorities, U.S. Africa Command conducted strikes against ISIS terrorists in Nigeria on Dec. 25, 2025, in Sokoto State.”

Security expert Brant Philip added that the strike on Islamic State targets in northwest Nigeria was believed to have been launched from the USS Paul Ignatius, using a Tomahawk missile.

In a separate post, Philip shared the video released by the U.S. Department of Defense showing the air strikes on terrorist hideouts in the Sokoto forest.

Recall that President Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social that the US launched an attack on a terrorist enclave in Nigeria.

The Nigerian government had confirmed that the strike was carried out as joint operations against terrorist enclaves in the country.

Trump announces deadly US military strikes on terrorists in nigeria as FG reacts

Former United States President Donald Trump has announced that U.S. forces carried out military strikes against ISIS-affiliated militants in northwest Nigeria.

In a post on his Truth Social account on Friday night, Trump said he ordered what he described as a “powerful and deadly strike” targeting terrorists accused of attacking civilians in the region.

Trump claimed the militants had been responsible for killings, particularly of Christian communities in northern Nigeria, and said he had earlier warned that continued violence would trigger military action. His remarks followed reports of heightened concern in Nigeria and diplomatic engagements between Nigerian authorities and U.S. officials after earlier threats of possible intervention.

“Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS terrorist elements in northwest Nigeria,” Trump wrote. He added that the operation was carried out by the U.S. military, which he praised for executing what he called precise strikes.

Trump also reiterated his stance against extremist groups, stating that his administration would not allow what he described as radical Islamic terrorism to thrive. He concluded his statement by commending the U.S. military and extending Christmas greetings.

There has been no immediate official confirmation from Nigerian authorities or independent sources regarding the reported strikes or their impact as of the time of this report.

Confirming the strike, the Nigerian government wrote: “Cooperation between Nigeria and the US has led to precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes in the Northwest.”

Christian genocide in Nigeria must stop now- Israel PM warns

0

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned against what he described as ongoing attacks on Christian faithful in Nigeria, calling for an end to religious persecution.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that claims of genocide against Christians in Nigeria have continued to generate intense local and international debate. Some lawmakers in the United States, backed by President Donald Trump, have alleged that Christians are being targeted and persecuted in parts of the country because of their faith.

Despite repeated denials and pushback from Nigerian government officials, President Trump designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), citing alleged violations of religious freedom. The designation was accompanied by strong rhetoric, including threats of possible military action to halt the reported killings.

A United States congressional delegation recently visited Nigeria to investigate reports of violence against Christians, with particular focus on the Middle Belt region. However, President Trump has yet to announce any concrete steps following the visit.

Israel weighed in on the issue on Wednesday, as Netanyahu addressed the matter in his Christmas message. He stressed that attacks on Christians or adherents of any religion should not be tolerated.

Speaking from Jerusalem, Netanyahu said Israel remains the only country in the Middle East where the Christian community thrives and practices its faith freely and safely. He added that persecution of Christians anywhere in the world must come to an end.

“The persecution of Christians or members of any religion cannot and must not be tolerated,” Netanyahu said, specifically referencing reports of militant attacks and displacement of Christians in Nigeria, which he said “must end, and must end now.”

Nigerians spend Christmas in darkness

Many Nigerians marked this year’s Christmas amid widespread power outages following a nationwide drop in electricity supply.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), which manages the national grid, attributed the decline in power generation to an explosion on the Escravos–Lagos Gas Pipeline in Delta State. The pipeline is operated by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company (NGPTC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

In an update released late Wednesday, NISO said electricity supply would return to normal “soon,” noting that repair work on the damaged pipeline was nearing completion. However, power outages persisted across most parts of the country on Christmas Day.

The situation has once again highlighted the long-standing challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector, more than a decade after its privatization in November 2013.

According to data released by NISO on Wednesday, the 11 electricity distribution companies (Discos) collectively received 3,272 megawatts from the national grid for distribution to over 250 million Nigerians. The shortfall has forced Discos to resort to load shedding and prolonged outages across their coverage areas.

Nigeria’s available electricity supply has largely stagnated between 3,000 and 5,000 megawatts over the past 12 years, despite repeated reform efforts. In 2024, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, pledged that the country would achieve a generation target of 6,000 megawatts by the end of December 2025.

Reacting to the development, the National President of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, Kunle Olubiyo, said systemic failures before and after privatization have continued to undermine the sector.

“You cannot build something on nothing. If the processes and systems are not properly structured, the fallout is what we are witnessing today. We did not get it right, beitherbefore aorafter the privatization of the power sector,” Olubiyo said.

Christmas: Naira strengthens sharply against US dollar

The Naira recorded a strong appreciation against the United States dollar over the past three days at the official foreign exchange market as trading closed for the Christmas holidays.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the local currency strengthened further on Wednesday, closing at N1,443.37 per dollar, compared with N1,449.99 on Tuesday.

This indicates that the Naira has gained a total of N13.18 against the dollar since Monday this week, according to figures from the apex bank.

At the parallel market, also known as the black market, the naira exchanged at N1,490 per dollar on Wednesday. This reflects an improvement from the N1,500 rate recorded on Monday, although it remained unchanged from Tuesday’s rate.

The recent uptrend in the naira’s performance is coming amid an increase in Nigeria’s external reserves, which rose to $45.24 billion as of December 23, 2025.

DAILY POST reports that the Naira had already posted gains against the dollar at the official market on both Monday and Tuesday, continuing its positive momentum into the Christmas holiday period.

Witnesses said atleast five worshippers were killed and over 35 injured.
