New Tax Laws will cut Airline costs, not cripple Nigerian Aviation Sector—Taiwo Oyedele replies Air Peace CEO

0

Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has dismissed claims by Air Peace Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Allen Onyema that newly introduced tax laws would cripple Nigeria’s aviation industry.

Oyedele said the reforms are aimed at reducing operational costs for airlines and addressing long-standing fiscal challenges in the sector, insisting that the new tax regime should not be blamed for rising airfares or fears of an industry shutdown.

His comments came in response to Onyema’s warning during an interview on Arise Television on Sunday that domestic airlines could collapse within months if the tax reforms, scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2025, are implemented without review.

Onyema had attributed high ticket prices to multiple taxes and levies, claiming that the 7.5 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on air tickets could push economy fares as high as N1.7 million.

In a statement posted on X on Monday, Oyedele acknowledged the challenges facing the aviation sector but stressed that government engagements with airline operators were ongoing and focused on easing their financial burden.

According to him, a major relief introduced under the new tax laws is the removal of the 10 percent withholding tax on aircraft leases, which had previously increased operating costs for airlines. He explained that the tax, which was non-recoverable in the past, has now been replaced with a rate to be set by regulation, creating room for full exemption or significant reduction.

Oyedele also said the reforms would make airlines fully VAT-neutral, enabling them to recover VAT paid on imported or locally sourced assets, consumables, and services. He added that excess input VAT would either be refunded within 30 days or offset against other tax obligations, thereby improving liquidity for airline operators.

“We recognize the genuine challenges facing Nigeria’s aviation industry, particularly the burden of multiple taxes, levies, and regulatory charges. The Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, on behalf of the government, has engaged extensively with airline operators, and those engagements are ongoing,” Oyedele said.

“Contrary to the claim that the new tax laws will hurt the industry, the reform is part of the solution, not the source of the problem. Several long-standing tax issues driving costs in the sector have been resolved or are being structurally addressed under the new tax laws.”

National grid collapse plunges Nigeria into nationwide blackout

0

Nigeria experienced a nationwide blackout on Monday following the collapse of the national electricity grid.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed the development in a statement shared on X on Monday. NISO, which oversees the transmission of power to electricity distribution companies across the country, said power generation dropped drastically to about 50 megawatts as efforts to restore the grid commenced.

According to the operator, only Abuja and Ibadan were receiving electricity supply at the time of the update, with a combined 50 megawatts available. This represents a sharp decline from the 3,660 megawatts allocated nationwide on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

NISO added that restoration work was ongoing to stabilize the grid and gradually return power supply to other parts of the country.

Sokoto Airstrikes: Terrorists planning heavy attacks, US not helping Nigeria – Primate Ayodele warns Tinubu

0

The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against celebrating the recent United States military strike in Sokoto, warning that bandits and terrorists are already planning severe retaliatory attacks across Nigeria.

In a statement iissuedon Monday by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, the cleric argued that the US action does not amount to real assistance for Nigeria, claiming it masks broader Western interests rather than addressing the country’s security challenges.

Primate Ayodele warned that the strike could worsen the situation, stressing that terrorists are prepared for the consequences and may launch heavy counter-attacks. He urged the Nigerian military to urgently regroup and devise strong strategies to prevent setbacks in the fight against insecurity.

According to him, the incident has further exposed what he described as the weakness of the current administration, noting that foreign intervention alone cannot halt kidnapping, terrorism, or banditry in the country.

“Nigerians should not celebrate, and President Tinubu should not celebrate either. This action will not stop insecurity or kidnapping. The government’s helplessness is being exposed, and America can act in ways that may not favour Nigeria,” Ayodele said.

He added that another attack could be imminent and called on the government to prepare adequately for possible reprisals.

The cleric also criticised individuals allegedly involved in negotiating with terrorists, describing them as major obstacles to ending insecurity. He insisted such actors must be identified and prosecuted if the country is serious about restoring peace.

While acknowledging that US involvement could help uncover terrorism financiers within Nigeria, Ayodele questioned the fate of those mediating with bandits, urging the military to focus on them as part of a well-coordinated security plan to prevent further escalation.

AFCON 2025: Three African countries exit tournament

0

Three nations—Botswana, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon—have been knocked out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after failing to pick up a single point in the group stage.

Although each team still has one group match remaining this week, their exits have already been confirmed due to results elsewhere in their groups.

Botswana sits at the bottom of Group D with zero points following back-to-back defeats. The Zebras opened their campaign with a 3–0 loss to Senegal before falling 1–0 to the Benin Republic. Despite having a final fixture against DR Congo on Tuesday, Botswana can no longer progress.

Equatorial Guinea has also been eliminated from Group E after two narrow losses. They were beaten 2–1 by Burkina Faso in their opener and then lost 1–0 to Sudan, leaving them without a point from two matches.

In Group F, Gabon crashed out after consecutive defeats. They lost 1–0 to Cameroon in their first game and were edged 3–2 by Mozambique in their second outing. Rooted to the bottom of the group, Gabon are mathematically out of contention and will face Ivory Coast on Wednesday in a match that will now be for pride only.
