Nigerian govt clears $1.42bn, N5.57tn NNPCL debt to FAAC

President Tinbu

President Bola Tinubu has authorized the clearance of most of the outstanding debts owed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to the Federation Account, approving the write-off of about 96 percent of the dollar-denominated obligations and roughly 88 percent of the naira liabilities.

The decision effectively eliminates about $1.42 billion and N5.57 trillion from NNPCL’s debt profile following a reconciliation exercise between the company and the Federation Account. Details of the approval are contained in a document prepared by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and presented at the November meeting of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

According to the report on October 2025 revenue collection presented at the FAAC meeting held on November 18, 2025, NNPCL’s outstanding obligations as earlier reported stood at $1.48 billion and N6.33 trillion, covering PSC, DSDP, RA, and MCA liftings, as well as joint venture and PSC royalty receivables.

Following the reconciliation, the NUPRC disclosed that $1.42 billion and N5.57 trillion of the total liabilities had been cleared, with the commission already effecting the necessary accounting entries in line with the presidential approval.

The commission also revealed that part of the dollar-denominated debt was recovered during the period under review, noting that $55 million was received, leaving an outstanding balance of about $1.8 million and N1.02 trillion. The recovered $55 million was included in the revenue shared by the federation for the month.

Meanwhile, royalty revenues from oil and gas production fell significantly below projections. While the approved monthly royalty target was N1.14 trillion, only N605.26 billion was realized in November, resulting in a shortfall of N538.92 billion.

In the section of the report headed “Recovery from NNPC Ltd Outstanding Obligations,” the commission said the debts earlier reported at the October 2025 FAAC meeting stood at “$1,480,610,652.58 and N6,332,884,316,237.13 for PSC, DSDP, RA & MCA Liftings, and JV & PSC Royalty Receivables, respectively.”

“Consequently, out of $1,480,610,652.58 and N6,332,884,316,237.13, the affected outstanding obligations that have been cleared are $1,421,727,723.00 and N5,573,895,769,388.45. NUPRC has passed the appropriate accounting entries as approved.”

The commission added that part of the dollar component was recovered in the month under review, stating, “However, the commission received $55,003,997.00 in the month under review from the outstanding, leaving a balance of $1,804,755.32 and N1,021,550,672,578.87. The amount of $55,003,997.00 received is part of the total collection reported above for sharing by the Federation this month.

As of November 30, 2025, NUPRC’s total approved cumulative revenue stood at N13.25 trillion, but actual collections amounted to N7.60 trillion, leaving a gap of N5.65 trillion. Royalty receipts accounted for most of the deficit, with approved cumulative royalties of N12.59 trillion against actual collections of N6.96 trillion.

The document also showed a month-on-month decline in revenue, as collections dropped from N873.10 billion in October 2025 to N660.04 billion in November.

The development comes amid ongoing scrutiny of NNPCL’s remittances, following an audit by Periscope Consulting, engaged by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, into allegations of unremitted oil revenues estimated at $42.37 billion between 2011 and 2017.

Nigeria governed by sick people— Sowore says Tinubu unwell, Akpabio dying

0

Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has claimed that President Bola Tinubu is unwell and “managing himself,” linking the allegation to the president’s sudden trip out of the country.

Sowore also alleged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio is “practically dying,” raising concerns about the health of Nigeria’s political leadership.

The activist made the claims on Sunday while reacting to Tinubu’s departure from Nigeria. The president, who spent the Christmas and New Year holidays in Lagos State, travelled to Europe on Sunday.

In a statement, Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, said the president is also scheduled to proceed to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates for an official visit. According to Onanuga, Tinubu will attend the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2026) Summit at the invitation of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

However, Sowore, in a post on X, alleged that Tinubu’s trip was health-related. He wrote that while illness itself is not a crime, it is “callous to use a country as health insurance for sick leaders,” questioning why Nigeria is being governed by leaders he described as unwell.

“I am not joining ADC. I can’t rrejoinwhat I am already a part of,” Obi said.

He explained that the coalition was built on collective agreement and cooperation, adding that no individual was stepping down for him within the ADC structure.

President Tinbu

President Bola Tinubu has departed Lagos for Europe ahead of his scheduled official visit to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, despite growing concerns over insecurity across the country.

According to a statement released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President will participate in the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2026) Summit at the invitation of the UAE President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The week-long summit, slated for early January, will bring together global leaders from government, business, and civil society to discuss strategies for advancing sustainable development worldwide.

The 2026 edition of the summit is themed “The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go” and is expected to connect ambition with action across innovation, finance, and human capital, while highlighting pathways for global progress.

President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria after the summit.

Meanwhile, the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the president over his frequent foreign trips, accusing him of neglecting pressing domestic challenges.

In a statement issued by the party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the president’s travel comes at a troubling time, as the country grapples with renewed insecurity, including a deadly bomb blast in Zamfara State and rising public anxiety following reports of a U.S. military strike on Nigerian soil.

Abdullahi noted that Nigerians were still waiting for reassurance from the president when news of his trip broke.

“In the wake of yet another deadly bomb blast in Zamfara, to which the President has not said a single word; on the back of an unprecedented foreign military attack on Nigerian soil; right in the middle of all the uncertainty it has provoked; with a confused and scared nation waiting for the President to speak to us and assure us that all is well, the next thing we hear is that the President has gone on holiday. What a president,” the statement read.

Police nab suspected killer of Europe-based man during housewarming in Edo

0

Edo state Police command has arrested Amadin William, the prime suspect in the killing of a Europe-based man, Eghosa Osarietinomwan, in the state.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this to journalists on Sunday in Benin City. She confirmed that the suspect has been taken into custody, adding that two other persons were also arrested in connection with the arson that followed the incident.

According to Ikoedem, Osarietinomwan sustained deep machete cuts to the neck after stepping out during his housewarming ceremony. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.

She explained that the suspect fled the scene after the attack and went into hiding but was tracked and arrested on December 27. “Meanwhile, two other persons have been arrested in connection with the arson that followed the incident,” she said.

DAILY POST gathered that the incident occurred on December 22 in Oben community, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State. The suspect was said to be the deceased’s childhood friend.

It was alleged that the suspect lured Osarietinomwan into a bush path during the housewarming ceremony, where he reportedly attacked him with a machete before fleeing the community. He was later apprehended in Benin City.

The deceased had reportedly returned from Europe to celebrate the Yuletide with his family before the tragic incident. Following the killing, angry youths in the community allegedly set the suspect’s house ablaze.

It’s most visible—CPPE revealed Nigeria’s top economic gains in 2025

0

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has identified stability in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market as the most visible macroeconomic achievement of the country in 2025.

CPPE’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muda Yusuf, made this known on Sunday while presenting a review of the Nigerian economy for 2025 and projections for 2026.

According to the economic think tank, the naira traded largely within the N1,440 to N1,500 range against the United States dollar throughout the year, reflecting improved stability in the foreign exchange market.

The center noted that the relative strength of the naira, supported by periodic appreciation against the dollar, helped to boost investor and business confidence during the period under review.

CPPE also linked the improved exchange rate environment to the moderation in inflation, which declined from 24.48 percent in January to about 14.45 percent by November 2025.

“Exchange rate stability emerged as the most visible achievement. Periodic marginal appreciation strengthened business confidence, eased imported inflation, and restored predictability to pricing, contracting, and investment planning,” Yusuf said.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that ahead of the Christmas holidays, the naira closed at N1,443.38 at the official market and about N1,490 at the parallel market.

US airstrikes: Nigeria needs help but not from racism, genocide enablers—Sheikh Gumi

0

Renowned and controversial  Islamic cleric Sheikh Abubakar Gumi has said Nigeria requires external support to address its insecurity challenges but cautioned against accepting help from criminal or unethical sources.

Gumi made the remarks in a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Sunday, where he questioned the kind of foreign security assistance Nigeria is considering or willing to embrace.

The retired army officer noted that the debate should not be about whether Nigeria needs help, stressing that every country at some point depends on external support to safeguard its security.

“The argument is simple: do we need help? Yes, every nation needs help for its security, but not from criminals who don’t respect international law, racists, religious bigots, and a known international genocide enabler”, he said.

However, the Islamic scholar warned that Nigeria must be careful not to rely on individuals, groups, or nations that disregard international law or have records of criminal conduct, racism, religious intolerance, or genocide.

According to Gumi, partnering with such actors could worsen Nigeria’s security crisis rather than solve it, adding that the country should seek ethical, lawful, and principled international cooperation.

This comes as the United States military, with the support of the Nigerian military, recently launched airstrikes on a terrorist enclave in Northwest Nigeria.

Please don’t kneel—Doris Ogala finally accepts Pastor Chris Okafor’s public apology

0

Nollywood actress Doris Ogala has confirmed that she has accepted an apology from Pastor Chris Okafor, founder of Grace Nation Bible Ministry.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Ogala acknowledged the cleric’s gesture, writing, “Pastor Chris, please don’t kneel. This was all I wanted. Apology accepted.”

Nigerian Newssphere reports that earlier in the day, Ogala had shared a video showing Pastor Okafor publicly seeking forgiveness. In the footage, the pastor was seen kneeling before his congregation as he expressed remorse over what he described as mistakes made in the past.

The development follows Ogala’s earlier accusations against the cleric, in which she alleged that he ended their relationship for another woman despite promising to marry her.

Addressing the controversy, Pastor Okafor maintained that several of the allegations leveled against him were untrue. However, he said he was willing to apologize to anyone who felt hurt by his actions.

“I am not joining issues,” he said, referring to Doris Ogala. “Mistakes have been made in the past, and I tender my apology to everybody. But everything that was said is not true. There are so many lies in most of the things that were said.”

Despite disputing parts of the claims, the cleric reiterated his readiness to make amends, stating that he was prepared to offer restitution to any woman he may have offended.

“To Doris Ogala, I will apologize, and I also apologize to everyone. I am ready to make a restitution to anyone and anybody, any lady, anywhere I’ve offended,” he said.

“I’m kneeling down before everyone and before the church. Forgive me. You can judge me. Pray for me,” Pastor Okafor added.
