National grid collapse plunges Nigeria into nationwide blackout

Nigeria experienced a nationwide blackout on Monday following the collapse of the national electricity grid.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed the development in a statement shared on X on Monday. NISO, which oversees the transmission of power to electricity distribution companies across the country, said power generation dropped drastically to about 50 megawatts as efforts to restore the grid commenced.

According to the operator, only Abuja and Ibadan were receiving electricity supply at the time of the update, with a combined 50 megawatts available. This represents a sharp decline from the 3,660 megawatts allocated nationwide on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

NISO added that restoration work was ongoing to stabilize the grid and gradually return power supply to other parts of the country.
