Rivers: Wike-Fubara fight can’t be solved by Tinubu or any mortal—Pastor Ibiyeomie

0

The General Overseer of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, has described the prolonged political rift between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as a spiritual issue beyond human resolution.

Speaking during a church service in a video that has since gone viral, the Port Harcourt–based cleric said no mortal can end the conflict, insisting that only divine intervention can resolve the crisis.

Ibiyeomie traced a recurring pattern of political fallouts in Rivers State, noting that successive governors have often clashed with their political benefactors. He recalled that former Governor Peter Odili fell out with his predecessor, Rufus Ada George; Chibuike Amaechi later fought Odili, who supported his rise; Wike battled Amaechi, his former boss; and now Governor Fubara is locked in a dispute with Wike.

According to the pastor, the cycle would likely repeat itself even after Fubara’s tenure if he were to anoint a successor.

“If God speaks to me, I will say it. No mortal man, I repeat, can solve the problem of Rivers State,” Ibiyeomie said. “It is not a physical problem. Has the president been able to solve it? No.”

He added, “Amaechi was Odili’s boy and fought him. Wike was Amaechi’s boy and fought him. Sim was Wike’s boy, and they are fighting. It can never be solved by any physical man, except by the hand of God.”

The cleric maintained that political efforts to end the crisis have failed because, in his view, the issue is spiritual rather than political.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the posting of four ambassador-designates from the 68 nominees earlier confirmed by the Senate.

The approval was disclosed in a statement issued by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday.

According to the statement, Ambassador Ayodele Oke has been cleared as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to France, while Colonel Lateef Are was approved as ambassador-designate to the United States of America.

President Tinubu also approved the posting of Ambassador Amin Dalhatu, a former Nigerian ambassador to South Korea, as the high commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom.

In addition, Usman Isa Dakingari Suleiman, a former governor of Kebbi State, was named ambassador-designate to Turkey. The posting comes ahead of President Tinubu’s scheduled state visit to the country next week.

Onanuga said the President, in a memo to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, directed the ministry to formally notify the governments of the four countries of the appointments in line with established diplomatic procedures.

Nigerian Newsphere recalls that the Senate, in December last year, screened and confirmed 68 ambassador-designates nominated by President Tinubu.

Rivers: Tinubu backs Fubara over rift with Wike

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his support for Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, insisting that the governor should be allowed to perform his constitutional duties without undue interference.

The President’s stance was disclosed by his Special Adviser on Policy and Communication, Daniel Bwala, during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television on Thursday.

Bwala noted that President Tinubu is committed to democratic principles and effective governance, stressing that political disagreements should not obstruct the smooth administration of any state.

He acknowledged the role of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing him as a key figure in the Tinubu administration. However, Bwala clarified that Wike is not a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to him, regardless of political alignments or differences, Governor Fubara must be given the necessary space to govern Rivers State in line with the mandate given to him by the people.

Why I refused to set up panel on Fubara’s impeachment- Rivers Chief Judge

0

The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Chibuzor Simeon Amadi, has declined a request to constitute a seven-member panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Ordu.

In a letter dated January 20, 2026, and addressed to the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, Justice Amadi said he was restrained by two subsisting court orders from receiving, processing or acting on any request to set up such a panel.

According to the Chief Judge, the orders were served on his office on January 16, 2026, and remain valid and binding.

He stressed that the principles of constitutionalism and the rule of law require strict obedience to court orders by all authorities, regardless of any personal or institutional views about their correctness.

Justice Amadi also cited a legal precedent from 2007, when the Chief Judge of Kwara State was criticised for constituting an investigative panel in defiance of a restraining court order. That action, he noted, was later nullified by the Court of Appeal.

He further disclosed that the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly has since filed an appeal against the court orders at the Court of Appeal, adding to the legal complexities surrounding the allegations against the governor and his deputy.

Two Lagos schools shutdown over explosion threats

0

Two private schools in Lagos—Grange School and Avi-Cenna School—have suspended academic activities following security threats indicating a possible explosion.

The schools disclosed the development in separate notices to parents and guardians, copies of which were obtained by DAILY POST on Thursday. The closures were described as precautionary measures aimed at ensuring the safety of students and staff.

In a statement signed by Paul Olubajo on behalf of Avi-Cenna School, the management said it received a text message warning of a potential fire-related explosion. Security agencies were immediately alerted, leading to the deployment of a specialised police unit to the school.

The school said security operatives conducted a thorough search of the premises using relevant equipment and later confirmed that the environment was safe. However, Avi-Cenna School announced that it would remain closed for the day as an added safety measure.

Parents were assured that further updates would be communicated as the situation unfolds, with the school emphasising that the decision was taken in the best interest of students, staff and families.

Similarly, Grange School announced a temporary closure in a letter dated January 21 and signed by its head, Richard McMahon. The school said it received a security alert on Wednesday evening, prompting management to suspend activities the next day.

Although the school noted that there was no immediate threat, it said the report was treated seriously, with relevant authorities engaged for guidance. The closure, according to the letter, would allow time for consultations with security agencies and the implementation of necessary safety protocols.

Grange School acknowledged that the closure might disrupt scheduled classes but said some teachers could hold online lessons at their discretion, with parents to be informed directly where virtual classes are planned.

The school thanked parents and guardians for their understanding and cooperation, assuring them that further communication would be provided as more information becomes available.

NIBSS reveals greatest fraud in Nigerian banks

0

The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement Systems (NIBSS) has identified insider fraud and social engineering as the most significant threats facing Nigeria’s banking and digital payment ecosystem.

Managing Director of NIBSS, Premier Oiwoh, disclosed this on Wednesday at an event in Lagos, noting that social engineering remains the most common fraud technique in the sector, often aided by insider involvement.

Oiwoh revealed that total digital payment fraud declined by 51 percent to N25.85 billion in 2025, down from N52.26 billion recorded in 2024. He explained that fraud is most prevalent across e-commerce and internet banking channels, followed by point-of-sale transactions, mobile platforms, and web-based services within the banking and fintech space.

According to him, fraud schemes such as SIM swap, account compromise, and phishing continue to evolve, posing persistent risks to financial institutions and customers.

“Last year alone, coordinated industry actions helped save about N20 billion that could have been lost,” Oiwoh said. “The most common fraud technique remains social engineering, and insider abuse is the greatest threat we face. Insider involvement is high, and recent investigations have confirmed this. Awareness is still critical, as many victims are easily deceived.”

He added that actual fraud losses stood at about N17.67 billion in 2023 before rising sharply to N52.26 billion in 2024, largely due to a single N31.1 billion fraud incident involving one entity. Losses, however, dropped significantly in 2025.

To curb the menace, Oiwoh stressed the need for stronger internal controls, closer monitoring of staff activities, and sustained collaboration across the industry. “Trust among institutions is essential,” he said.

He also disclosed that Lagos State accounts for 63 percent of reported fraud cases nationwide, followed by the Federal Capital Territory, Ogun, Rivers, and Delta States.

177 worshippers abduction in Kaduna: Three trailer loads of Lakurawa terrorists entered Sokoto from Sahel in August—Kefas

0

Steven Kefas, founder of the Community Development and Rights Advocacy Foundation, has alleged that about three trailer-loads of Lakurawa fighters entered Sokoto State from the Sahel region through Niger in August last year without any intervention by authorities.

Kefas made the allegation on Thursday while speaking on Channels Television’s The Brief. He said the influx of foreign fighters is part of a wider and deepening security challenge sustained by funds generated from kidnapping and ransom payments.

According to him, a close associate who spent about four months in captivity and was released in October last year disclosed that arms suppliers often arrive at terrorist camps on the same day ransom payments are made. He claimed the ransom money is immediately used to purchase weapons.

Kefas said the development shows that kidnapping has become a deliberate means of raising funds to acquire arms, warning that the trend suggests the insecurity could persist if urgent action is not taken.

He further alleged that fighters continue to enter Nigeria from countries such as Mali and Niger, while ransom payments provide a steady source of funding for weapons procurement, enabling terrorist groups to expand their operations.

Kefas noted that insecurity has now spread to states previously considered less affected, including Kwara and Kogi, which he said are increasingly witnessing similar criminal activities.

He also expressed concern over what he described as targeted attacks and alleged land occupation in parts of Kaduna State, particularly Kajuru Local Government Area. He cited the abduction of about 177 worshippers from churches on a Sunday, as well as previous attacks in which worshippers were killed during church services.

According to him, nearly 40 communities in the Kajuru Local Government Area have been displaced, with some reportedly occupied by terrorists. He described the situation as complex and said the government has not handled it adequately.

Kefas warned that the combination of continuous infiltration of fighters, ransom-funded arms purchases, and displacement of communities poses a serious threat to national security.

Naira slips against dollar at official market

The naira weakened against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Thursday, marking its second depreciation in three days.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the local currency closed at N1,420.69 per dollar on Thursday, compared with N1,419.35 recorded on Wednesday.

However, the currency strengthened slightly at the parallel market, gaining N3 to trade at N1,490 per dollar on Thursday, as against N1,493 exchanged the previous day.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the naira has posted a mix of gains and losses over the past three days across different segments of the foreign exchange market.
