‘We haven’t done that’—Mikel Arteta finally replies to City’s Guardiola on Arsenal’s EPL title race

0

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has played down comments by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola describing the Gunners as the best team in the world, insisting his side still has a lot to prove.

Guardiola made the remark during a pre-match press conference ahead of Manchester City’s Premier League clash with Wolves, where he praised Arsenal’s quality and consistency.

However, Arteta was quick to dismiss the suggestion when asked about it at his own press conference ahead of Arsenal’s league showdown with Manchester United on Sunday. The Spanish coach stressed that winning major trophies is the true benchmark for such recognition.

“I don’t know,” Arteta said in response to Guardiola’s claim. “I think we’re a team that wants to constantly get better. We’re doing a lot of things right, but we’re far from perfect.

“To be considered the best team in the world, you have to win a lot of things, and we haven’t done that.”

Arteta’s comments underline his focus on continued improvement as Arsenal push to translate their strong performances into silverware.

The naira closed the week on a positive note at the official foreign exchange market on Friday, appreciating slightly against the United States dollar amid a rise in Nigeria’s external reserves.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the local currency traded at N1,421.63 per dollar on Friday, improving from N1,422.07 recorded on Thursday. This represents a marginal day-on-day gain of 44 kobo.

Despite the late-week uptick, the naira posted a mixed performance over the week, recording three losses and two gains at the official market.

At the parallel market, the currency remained largely stable, exchanging at B1,490 per dollar throughout the week, according to Bureau de Change operators at Wuse Zone 4 in Abuja.

The modest appreciation came as Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves rose to $46.01 billion as of January 22, 2026, up from $45.95 billion on January 19, reflecting a slight improvement in the country’s external buffers.

‘Is Temi aware?’- Mr Eazi finally breaks silence on rumors of welcoming his first child with Otedola’s daughter

Nigerian singer Oluwatosin Ajibade, popularly known as Mr Eazi, has debunked rumors claiming that he and his wife, Temi Otedola, have welcomed their first child.

The speculation followed a post on X by a social media influencer, Kolaqhazim, who shared a suspected AI-generated image of Temi holding a newborn and claimed the celebrity couple had welcomed a baby girl.

“Finally!!! Temi Otedola and Mr Eazi have reportedly welcomed their first child—a healthy baby girl—after an eight-year relationship,” the post read.

The claim quickly gained traction, with fans flooding the comment section with congratulatory messages.

However, Mr. Eazi shut down the reports with a sarcastic response, questioning whether his wife was even aware of the supposed development.

“Is Temi aware of this?” he wrote, effectively dismissing the rumor.

DAILY POST recalls that Mr. Eazi and Temi Otedola, daughter of Nigerian billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, tied the knot last year in a series of lavish wedding ceremonies held in Monaco, Dubai, and Iceland.

Popular Nollywood actress Nancy Isime has opened up about her readiness for marriage, stressing that kindness, not wealth or status, is her top priority in choosing a life partner.

Speaking during a candid conversation with media personality Morayo Afolabi-Brown, the actress described genuine kindness as a non-negotiable quality for her, noting that it outweighs material possessions or social standing.

Isime explained that she would not hesitate to marry a kind man, even if he has shortcomings in other areas, as long as the foundation of the relationship is rooted in good character. According to her, other deficiencies can be worked on over time.

The movie star also made it clear that she feels prepared for marriage at this stage of her life, revealing that she is now 34 years old.

“I am of marriage age. I am 34. Yes, I am a very attractive lady, and men can desire me, but I have to be careful about what I settle for,” she said. “Kindness is one of the most attractive traits to me. It has to be genuine, not performative. Once you are kind, every other thing can be worked on.”

Biafrans in celebration as the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been granted honorary citizenship of the US state of Georgia.

Kanu, who is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto, Nigeria Correctional Centre following his conviction on terrorism-related charges by the Nigerian government, was proclaimed an “Honorary Georgia Citizen” by the Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger.

The proclamation, dated January 16, 2026, also named the IPOB leader a Goodwill Ambassador of the state of Georgia.

According to the document, Raffensperger said the honour was in recognition of Kanu as an outstanding citizen, urging that he be accorded all courtesies befitting a Goodwill Ambassador of Georgia in his travels within and outside the United States.

A former Nigerian ambassador to South Africa, Uche Ajulu, received the proclamation on behalf of Kanu during a presentation ceremony held in Georgia on Friday.

The proclamation was formally signed and sealed at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta on January 16, 2026.

Kano state governor, Abba Yusuf dumps NNPP

0

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).

The development comes days after the Kano State chapter of the party insisted that the governor must officially withdraw his membership before leaving its platform.

NNPP State Chairman, Elmasud Doguwa, had earlier stated that the party had no intention of forcing Yusuf to remain if he no longer wished to continue with the NNPP, stressing that due process must be followed.

Yusuf’s resignation also follows his recent closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu, a development that has further fueled political speculation over his next move.

BREAKING: Nigeria in darkness as National Grid Collapses for First Time in 2026

0

Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Friday, throwing several parts of the country into blackout in the first system failure recorded in 2026.

Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that power generation dropped to zero megawatts at about 1 p.m., with electricity supply to all 11 distribution companies nationwide completely cut off.

The affected distribution companies include Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja and Yola, all of which recorded zero load allocation at the time of the collapse.

The latest incident comes months after multiple grid failures recorded in 2025, the most recent of which occurred on December 29, underscoring persistent challenges in the country’s power sector despite efforts to stabilise the system.

Only recently, the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) announced that it had restored an additional 450 megawatts to the national grid after completing maintenance at the Geregu National Integrated Power Project.

Similarly, in a bid to enhance grid stability, NISO disclosed that on November 9, 2025, it partnered with the West African Power Pool Information and Coordination Centre to conduct a synchronisation test connecting Nigeria’s grid to the wider West African electricity network.

BREAKING: Fubara Impeachment: Jubilation for Wike’s camp as court rejects injunction to restrain Chief Judge

0

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo has declined to grant a perpetual injunction seeking to restrain the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Chibuzor Simeon Amadi, from acting on impeachment requests by the State House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Ordu.

The ruling has brought relief to members of the Rivers Assembly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who are pursuing the impeachment process.

The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by Lere Olayinka, media aide to Wike. According to Olayinka, the presiding judge held that the court could not grant the requested order because the matter is already before the Court of Appeal.

He said the judge subsequently adjourned the case indefinitely, pending the outcome of the appeal.

“The implication is that the High Court will not take any further steps on the issue until the Court of Appeal determines the substantive matters surrounding the impeachment process,” Olayinka stated.

The latest development comes amid heightened political tension in the state. Justice Amadi had earlier declined to constitute a seven-member panel to investigate the impeachment allegations against Governor Fubara and his deputy, citing existing court orders.

Recall that the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, had served Governor Fubara with an impeachment notice and later confirmed that the notice was duly received by the Chief Judge.

Naira extends slide against US dollar

0

The Nigerian naira continued its downward trend against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Thursday.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the naira weakened to N1,422.07 per dollar, compared with N1,420.69 recorded on Wednesday.

This represents a day-on-day depreciation of N1.34 against the dollar.

Checks indicate that the local currency has now recorded losses against the greenback on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week, underscoring persistent pressure at the official window.

In contrast, the naira remained unchanged at the parallel market, trading at N1,490 per dollar on Thursday, the same rate as the previous day.

The continued depreciation comes despite an improvement in Nigeria’s external reserves, which rose to $45.99 billion as of January 21, 2026, up from $45.95 billion on January 19, according to figures released by the apex bank.
