Two Lagos schools shutdown over explosion threats

Two private schools in Lagos—Grange School and Avi-Cenna School—have suspended academic activities following security threats indicating a possible explosion.

The schools disclosed the development in separate notices to parents and guardians, copies of which were obtained by DAILY POST on Thursday. The closures were described as precautionary measures aimed at ensuring the safety of students and staff.

In a statement signed by Paul Olubajo on behalf of Avi-Cenna School, the management said it received a text message warning of a potential fire-related explosion. Security agencies were immediately alerted, leading to the deployment of a specialised police unit to the school.

The school said security operatives conducted a thorough search of the premises using relevant equipment and later confirmed that the environment was safe. However, Avi-Cenna School announced that it would remain closed for the day as an added safety measure.

Parents were assured that further updates would be communicated as the situation unfolds, with the school emphasising that the decision was taken in the best interest of students, staff and families.

Similarly, Grange School announced a temporary closure in a letter dated January 21 and signed by its head, Richard McMahon. The school said it received a security alert on Wednesday evening, prompting management to suspend activities the next day.

Although the school noted that there was no immediate threat, it said the report was treated seriously, with relevant authorities engaged for guidance. The closure, according to the letter, would allow time for consultations with security agencies and the implementation of necessary safety protocols.

Grange School acknowledged that the closure might disrupt scheduled classes but said some teachers could hold online lessons at their discretion, with parents to be informed directly where virtual classes are planned.

The school thanked parents and guardians for their understanding and cooperation, assuring them that further communication would be provided as more information becomes available.
