Grammys to Honor Nigerian Music Legend Fela Kuti

0

Almost three decades after his passing, legendary Nigerian musician and Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti is set to receive one of the most prestigious honors in global music.

The Recording Academy has announced that Fela will be posthumously honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Grammy Awards, making him the first African musician to receive the distinction, according to the BBC.

The award recognizes Fela’s far-reaching impact on music, culture, and political expression across the world. As the undisputed creator of Afrobeat, his bold sound, philosophy, and activism have shaped generations of artists in Africa and beyond.

Reacting to the announcement, Fela’s son and fellow Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, described the honor as deeply emotional and symbolic.

“Fela has lived in the hearts of the people for a very long time. Now the Grammys have recognized that, and it feels like a double victory. It brings balance to the Fela story,” he said.

Fela’s former manager and longtime associate, Rikki Stein, also welcomed the recognition, describing it as long overdue.

“Africa hasn’t historically ranked high in their interests, but I think that is changing now,” Stein noted.

The BBC observed that the honor comes amid growing global attention on African music, driven largely by the worldwide success of Afrobeats—a genre deeply rooted in Fela’s groundbreaking work. This shift was further reflected in the Grammys’ introduction of the Best African Performance category in 2024.

Family members, friends, and close associates of the late musician are expected to attend the Grammy ceremony to receive the award on his behalf, celebrating a legacy that fused music with political resistance and cultural pride.

Beyond his artistry, Fela was a fierce critic of corruption, military rule, and social injustice in Nigeria. He consistently used his music as a vehicle for protest, a stance that frequently brought him into conflict with successive military governments.

That confrontation peaked in 1977 following the release of his protest song Zombie, when soldiers invaded and destroyed his Lagos commune, the Kalakuta Republic. The attack led to the death of his mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, who later died from injuries sustained during the raid.

Rather than retreat, Fela intensified his resistance, famously carrying his mother’s coffin to government offices and releasing Coffin for Head of State, transforming personal loss into a powerful political statement.

Nearly 30 years after his death, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award stands as a historic acknowledgement of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s enduring influence—not only as a musical innovator, but as a fearless global symbol of resistance, justice, and African identity.

We’re unshaken—Turaki-led PDP vows to appeal court ruling on Ibadan convention

0

The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has assured its members that the party remains legally intact despite a judgment of the Federal High Court in Ibadan nullifying its National Convention held in the Oyo State capital.

The assurance was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.

According to the statement, the court declined to grant an order of mandamus sought by the party, holding that doing so would amount to sitting on appeal over the decisions of courts of coordinate jurisdiction.

Reacting to the ruling, the Turaki-led PDP said it has directed its legal team to immediately file an appeal and take all necessary steps to advance its arguments and safeguard its position.

The leadership that emerged from the Ibadan National Convention maintained that it remains “legally intact and unshaken” as it awaits the outcome of proceedings at the appellate courts.

Ememobong urged party members to remain calm and steadfast, stressing that the judgment poses no threat to the party’s direction.

“Notwithstanding this judgment, our party remains firmly on course. We urge our members to stay resolute and committed. There is absolutely no cause for alarm,” he said.

The party further reiterated that its Rebirth Movement remains on track.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the court nullified the opposition party’s convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Thursday’s court judgment was in favor of Minister of Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike’s camp of PDP.

A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has nullified the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention held on November 15, 2025.

In its ruling, the court restrained Turaki, loyal to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and others from parading themselves as national officers of the party.

The court further declared that the Caretaker Committee led by Abdulrahman, alongside Senator Samuel Anyanwu, remains the only recognized National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP pending the conduct of a valid national convention.

The Abdulrahman–Anyanwu-led leadership, which is aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was affirmed by the court as the legitimate interim authority of the opposition party.

The judgment is seen as a major relief for the Wike-backed faction within the PDP at the expense of Makinde.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that there has been a cold war between Wike and Makinde in the past days.

Coup plot in Nigeria: Nollywood actor Stanley Amadi arrested over plan to oust Tinubu

0

Nollywood actor and filmmaker Stanley Amadi has been arrested in connection with an alleged foiled plot to forcibly remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from office.

According to Premium Times, Amadi, a former chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) in Enugu State, was taken into custody in September 2025 alongside several military officers suspected to be involved in the plot. However, details of his arrest only became public recently.

Security sources said Amadi was allegedly recruited to act as a propagandist for the group accused of planning the takeover. Investigators further claimed that the suspects discussed plans to target senior government officials, including President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.

The Defense Headquarters on Monday confirmed that investigations had uncovered an attempt to unlawfully remove the current administration. It added that military officers linked to the case would face military judicial panels.

In a statement, the military said the investigation had been concluded and forwarded to the appropriate authorities in line with existing regulations. It noted that several officers were identified as having allegedly plotted against the government, describing their actions as a breach of military ethics and professional standards.

Earlier reports in October indicated that 16 military officers were under investigation, though the army initially said the probe was related to indiscipline and violations of service rules. Subsequent investigations reportedly led to the arrest of additional officers and civilians, including Amadi.

Sources said the suspects would be subjected to different legal processes based on their status, with military personnel expected to face court-martial, while civilians would be prosecuted in civil courts.

Amadi is a prominent figure in Nollywood, with credits as an actor, director, and production manager. His works include The Album, Tiger King, Cornerstone, and Once Upon a Dream. His last post on Instagram was on September 19, 2025, shortly before his arrest.

Naira posts strongest gain against US dollar in two years

The naira on Thursday recorded its strongest appreciation against the United States dollar in two years at the official foreign exchange market.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the local currency strengthened to N1,396.99 per dollar, marking its best performance since the introduction of the Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System (EFEMS).

This represents a day-on-day gain of N3.49 against the dollar at the official window.

At the parallel market, the naira also improved, appreciating by N5 to close at N1,480 per dollar on Thursday, compared with the N1,485 recorded the previous day.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the naira has now posted four consecutive days of gains against the dollar at the official foreign exchange market.

The sustained rally comes amid a rise in Nigeria’s external reserves, which climbed to $46.11 billion as of January 28, 2026, from $46.04 billion recorded on January 26, according to data from the apex bank.

BREAKING: Wike moves to jail striking FCTA workers

0

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approached the National Industrial Court seeking an order to commit striking workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to prison for allegedly disobeying a court order halting their industrial action.

The move followed the workers’ decision to resume their strike despite an order issued by the court on January 27, directing them to suspend the action pending the determination of a suit filed against them by the FCT Minister.

To underscore his position, Wike obtained Form 48—a statutory notice outlining the consequences of disobeying a court order—which is to be served on the striking workers. The document was procured on his behalf by a senior advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Ogwu James Onoja of the Bar and Bench Chambers, Abuja.

Form 48, titled “Notice of Consequence of Disobedience of Order of Court,” warns that failure to comply with the order of the National Industrial Court could result in contempt proceedings and possible imprisonment.

The notice reads in part: “Take note that unless you obey the directions contained in the order of Honourable Justice E. D. Sublimi of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria delivered on the 27th day of January, 2026, you will be guilty of contempt of court and will be liable to be committed to prison.”

The notice, dated January 29, was signed by the Registrar of the National Industrial Court, Mr. Olajide Balogun.

Justice Emmanuel Danjuma Sublimi had, on January 27, ordered the FCTA workers to suspend their strike action following an application by the FCT Minister, who sought a directive compelling them to return to work. The court ruled that all industrial actions must cease once a dispute has been referred to the National Industrial Court.

Citing Section 18(1)(e) of the Trade Disputes Act, Justice Sublimi held that the filing of an originating summons amounts to a referral of the dispute and mandates the suspension of any ongoing strike. He warned that failure to comply with the provision could attract sanctions, stressing that public interest and industrial peace outweigh any inconvenience caused by halting the strike.

Despite being served with the court order, the workers reportedly resumed the strike four days later, citing a notice of appeal filed at the Court of Appeal against the ruling. However, Wike’s legal team rejected the justification, insisting that the appeal does not operate as a stay of execution.

According to the minister’s lawyers, only an express order staying the execution of the court’s ruling can justify the continuation of the strike. They urged the workers to obey the law to avoid contempt proceedings, noting that “court orders are not made in vain and must be obeyed for order and sanity to prevail.”

Justice Sublimi adjourned the substantive suit to March 25, 2026, for hearing.

The FCTA and Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) workers had commenced the industrial action on January 19, shutting down activities across Abuja over what they described as unmet demands by the Federal Government. The strike affected FCTA secretariats, departments, agencies, area councils, and parastatals across the FCT.

Onitsha Main Market traders vow to end sit-at-home, assure Soludo of full compliance

0

Traders at the Onitsha Main Market have pledged to stop complying with the Monday sit-at-home order, declaring their readiness to resume full business activities in line with the Anambra State Government’s directive.

The commitment was made on Thursday during an interactive session between Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo and market leaders from across the state.

The meeting followed the recent closure of the Onitsha Main Market and the prolonged Monday shutdown, which has severely disrupted commercial activities across the South-East.

Speaking on behalf of the traders, the Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Mr. Chijioke Okpalugo, said traders were prepared to reopen and operate fully on Mondays in support of the governor’s vision of “One Anambra.” However, he appealed for improved security to ensure the safety of lives and property.

In his remarks, Governor Soludo reiterated that all markets and shops in Anambra State must remain open on every working day, including Mondays, stressing that the era of sit-at-home–induced closures was over.

The governor clarified that the sit-at-home was not linked to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, noting that Kanu does not support the action. He questioned why the practice persisted in parts of Anambra when it does not occur in Umuahia, Kanu’s hometown.

Soludo further alleged that many of those enforcing the sit-at-home were not indigenes of Anambra State and warned that the government would adopt stringent measures if the defiance continued.

In response, market leaders called for a visible and sustained security presence in markets, the full operation of motor parks to ease the movement of traders and customers, and decisive action against individuals who benefit from or enforce the sit-at-home order.
