5G: MTN, GLO, Airtel lag as majority of Nigerians are without access three years after launch—NCC

EVC NCC, Aminu Maida

Over three years after the launch of 5G services in Nigeria, the majority of subscribers are still unable to access the high-speed network, largely due to inadequate infrastructure deployment by mobile network operators, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Data contained in the NCC’s fourth-quarter Network Performance Report, released on Wednesday, showed that 5G connectivity remains limited, even in major cities such as Lagos and Abuja. The report attributed the situation to the failure of mobile network operators (MNOs) to deploy sufficient infrastructure to support 5G-enabled devices.

Although MTN Nigeria emerged as the leading operator in terms of 5G availability and overall network performance, the NCC noted that service quality across the country remains inadequate. The report indicated that MTN recorded a 5G availability gap of about 50 per cent, while other operators, including Airtel, Globacom, and T2, posted gaps ranging from 83 per cent to as high as 99 per cent, depending on location.

The NCC further highlighted significant coverage challenges in Lagos, describing the situation as a “phantom signal” phenomenon. According to the report, the average 5G coverage gap in Lagos stands at 55.4 per cent, meaning that more than half the time, a 5G-capable device in the city is unable to connect to a 5G network. It also identified 499 locations across Lagos as “critical zones”, where the coverage gap exceeds 70 per cent, most of them in high-density commercial areas.

Reacting to the findings, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Aminu Maida, said the Commission would continue to engage stakeholders to improve network quality nationwide. He described the release of the report as part of the NCC’s commitment to transparent and data-driven regulation.

“Today’s engagement reflects our commitment to the continuous improvement of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. Through our collaboration with Ookla, we are providing independent insights into real-world network performance and the lived experience of Nigerians across cities, rural communities, highways, and emerging 5G zones,” Maida said.

Also speaking was the Executive Commissioner for Technical Services at the NCC, Engr. Abraham Oshadami said the Commission’s data initiatives are empowering consumers to better assess the quality of services provided by MNOs. He noted that the NCC’s partnership with global analytics firm Ookla has led to the development of nationwide Network Coverage Maps and the publication of quarterly performance reports.

“These initiatives are designed to ensure transparency, improve consumer awareness, and promote healthy competition in the sector,” Oshadami said.

Meanwhile, the NCC’s Head of Public Affairs, Mrs Nnenna Ukoha, said the quarterly reports serve as valuable resources for the media, providing data for daily news coverage, investigative reporting, and in-depth sector analysis. She added that the commission remains committed to supporting accurate and informed reporting of developments in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.

Recall that the 5G network was launched in September 2022, pioneered by MTN Nigeria.

Nigerian Naira records massive gains against US dollar in official, black markets

0

The naira ended the week on a positive note, recording significant appreciation against the United States dollar across both official and parallel foreign exchange markets.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the local currency strengthened further on Friday, closing at N1,386.55 per dollar at the official market, compared with N1,396.99 on Thursday.

This represents a day-on-day gain of N10.44 against the dollar.

The upward trend was also reflected at the parallel market, where the naira appreciated by N10 to close at N1,470 per dollar on Friday, from N1,480 recorded the previous day.

On a week-on-week basis, analysis showed that the naira gained N35.08 at the official market and N20 at the black market.

The sustained appreciation of the naira comes amid an improvement in Nigeria’s external reserves, which rose to $46.18 billion as of January 29, 2026, up from $46.01 billion recorded at the close of trading the previous week.

EPL: Arsenal announce deal for two fresh players.

0

Arsenal on Friday announced two contract-related decisions involving academy players ahead of their Premier League clash with Leeds United on Saturday.

In a statement published on the club’s official website, the Gunners confirmed that highly rated youngster Max Dowman has signed a pre-contract agreement, paving the way for him to put pen to paper on professional terms when he turns 17 in December.

Dowman joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of eight and has continued to impress as he progressed through the Hale End system, setting several youth-level records along the way. Comfortable as both an attacking midfielder and a winger, his technical quality, vision, and versatility have marked him out as one of England’s most promising young talents.

In a separate development, Arsenal also announced that defender Maldini Kacurri has completed a permanent transfer to League Two side Grimsby Town.

Kacurri joined the North London club in 2022 and signed his first professional contract in June 2024. The 20-year-old recently returned from a successful loan spell with National League outfit Morecambe before sealing his move away from the Emirates.

China grants UK citizens visa-free entry

0

China has eased its entry requirements for British citizens, allowing visa-free travel of up to 30 days for business, tourism, and other short-term visits.

The move is one of the major outcomes of the ongoing state visit of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who is in China alongside senior government officials and business leaders.

With the development, the United Kingdom joins countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Australia, and Japan under China’s visa-free regime, which has been extended until December 2026.

Reacting to the decision, the UK government said the relaxed visa policy would create fresh opportunities for British businesses to grow and expand into the Chinese market, helping to boost economic growth and support jobs back home.

The renewed UK-China partnership cuts across government-to-government relations and private sector cooperation in healthcare, legal services, financial and professional services, and education and skills development.

Both countries have also agreed to conduct a joint study on the possibility of negotiating a bilateral services agreement that would set clear rules for British firms operating in China.

As the world’s second-largest exporter of services, the UK is projected to sell up to £13 billion worth of services annually to China, driven by rising demand from the Asian economic giant.

Prime Minister Starmer noted that many UK businesses are keen to deepen their presence in China, describing the country as one of the world’s leading economic powerhouses. He said the relaxed visa rules would support firms seeking to expand internationally while stimulating growth and employment at home.

During the visit, the UK and China signed several agreements covering health cooperation, conformity assessment, transnational organized crime and illegal immigration, domiciliary services and sports industries, and technical and vocational education and training.

Additional agreements include a joint study on a UK-China Trade in Services Agreement, boosting UK exports to China, strengthening the UK-China Joint Economic and Trade Commission, and cooperation on food safety and animal and plant quarantine.

Donald Duke dumps PDP again, joins ADC

0

Former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke has once again resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Duke completed his defection by registering as a member of the ADC in Ward 5 of Calabar Municipality, where he collected his party membership card, signaling his official entry into the opposition party.

His move comes amid internal disagreements within the ADC in Cross River State. The party’s former governorship candidate, Dr. Effiong Nyong, recently wrote to the ADC national chairman, protesting the inclusion of certain individuals from the state in the party’s 50 Wise Men and Women Policy Manifesto Committee.

Nyong also criticized a statement credited to the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, which listed some persons he claimed neither resigned from the PDP nor contributed to the ADC. He called for their removal from the committee.

Political analysts suggest Duke’s prompt formal registration may be connected to the controversy, as the former governor had earlier been mentioned among notable figures linked to the party.

Duke had previously exited the PDP for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), where he later emerged as the party’s presidential candidate under controversial circumstances.

Meanwhile, ADC leaders in the Bakassi Local Government Area have intensified efforts to mobilize support for the party across Cross River State, describing it as a credible alternative ahead of future elections.

Following a stakeholders’ meeting involving chapter executives, ward chairmen and secretaries, party leaders accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of poor governance and urged Nigerians to reclaim the country.

In a statement signed by the Bakassi Chapter Chairman, Emmanuel Asuquo, and the Secretary, Eko Boco, the party reaffirmed its loyalty to the ADC national leadership and pledged support for the National Chairman, Senator David Mark, and National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. The statement also called on undecided citizens to join the party’s “transformative agenda.”

Soludo takeover direct administration of Onitsha Main Market as IPOB kicks

0

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has taken over the direct administration of Onitsha Main Market, effectively sidelining the existing market leadership amid the controversy surrounding the continued observance of Monday sit-at-home protests by traders.

The governor had last Monday visited the market and announced a one-week closure, citing traders’ persistent compliance with the sit-at-home directive. The decision triggered tension and protests among traders, but Soludo insisted the closure would remain in force.

On Sunday, the governor met with market leaders in a closed-door meeting at the Lighthouse in Awka, where he presented them with two options. Despite the ongoing closure, some traders reportedly opened their shops on Monday, contrary to earlier warnings.

According to sources familiar with the meeting, the first option required traders to fully resume business on Mondays, mark attendance, and allow the government to regenerate and reorganize the market. This would include the demolition of illegal structures and plazas, the creation of wider access roads, and the restoration of parking spaces.

The second option involved the continuation of the Monday sit-at-home, which would result in the demolition of the market and a full reconstruction lasting about two years to restore the original master plan.

Governor Soludo reportedly described the restoration of parking facilities in the Main Market as an emergency, warning that all illegal structures erected on designated parking areas would be demolished without delay.

Sources said the traders opted for the first option, agreeing to reopen the market on Mondays and allow the removal of illegal structures to create wider roads and restore parking spaces.

During the meeting, the governor also disclosed plans to set up a committee to recertify all shop occupants in the market, stressing the need for the government to have an accurate record of traders operating there. He reportedly rejected pleas for the market to reopen on Saturday, insisting that reopening would only be allowed on Monday, when compliance would be reassessed.

“The traders agreed to the terms and will reopen the market on Monday to resume business,” a source said.

Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a Biafra-wide solidarity lockdown scheduled for Monday in support of Onitsha traders and to demand the immediate release of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement issued by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group described the planned shutdown as a peaceful and unified response to the one-week closure of Onitsha Main Market by the Anambra State government.

The group reiterated that the Monday sit-at-home originated as a protest calling for Kanu’s release and urged residents across the South-East to observe the solidarity strike peacefully by staying indoors and suspending commercial and public activities.

Ex-Portugal star Nani ignores Ronaldo, Messi, names GOAT

0

Former Manchester United winger Nani has named Brazilian icon Ronaldinho as the greatest footballer of all time, leaving out both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi from the top spot.

In a fast-paced Q&A with ESPN, the Portuguese star revealed his all-time picks across several categories. While acknowledging Messi as the best playmaker ever, Nani opted for Brazilian legend Romário as the greatest finisher, overlooking his former club and international teammate Ronaldo.

Nani also selected Nemanja Vidić as the best defender of all time, former Belgium international Michel Preud’homme as the greatest goalkeeper, and chose Denílson—rather than Messi or Ronaldo—as the best dribbler ever.

The biggest surprise came at the end of the segment when Nani was asked to name the greatest footballer in history. Without hesitation, he chose Ronaldinho, praising the Brazilian’s flair and influence on the game.

Despite his selections, Nani urged fans to move past the long-running Messi-versus-Ronaldo debate. Speaking in 2025, he encouraged supporters to appreciate both superstars while they are still active, noting that football will feel different once they retire.

After Ronaldo extended his contract with Al-Nassr, Nani told GOAL that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains exceptional. “He’s a machine, he’s a different player, and you can tell by the level he’s reached in football,” he said. “We talk about Ronaldo and Messi a lot, but when they stop playing, football will never be the same again.”

Nani played alongside Ronaldo 130 times for club and country, combining for 14 goals. He also faced Messi five times in his career, recording two wins and three defeats against the Argentine.

Mercy Johnson: Court grants Nollywood actress Angela Okorie bail over alleged cyberbullying

0

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday granted Nollywood actress Angela Okorie bail in the sum of N5 million, with one surety in like amount, over allegations of cyberbullying fellow actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie.

Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the ruling after considering Okorie’s bail application filed by her counsel, Earnest Nwoye. Although the prosecution opposed the application, the judge held that there was no concrete evidence before the court to suggest that the defendant would abscond if granted bail.

“Bail is at the discretion of the court and must be exercised judicially and judiciously. In the interest of justice, I am inclined to grant the application,” Justice Nwite ruled.

The court ordered that the surety must be a Level 13 civil servant who is required to depose to an affidavit of means and present an appointment letter as well as evidence of the last promotion.

Justice Nwite further directed that both Okorie and her surety submit two passport photographs each to the court registrar. The residence of the surety is also to be verified by the registrar.

The judge adjourned the matter until March 23 for the commencement of trial and ordered that Okorie be remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre pending the perfection of her bail conditions.

Grammys to Honor Nigerian Music Legend Fela Kuti

0

Almost three decades after his passing, legendary Nigerian musician and Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti is set to receive one of the most prestigious honors in global music.

The Recording Academy has announced that Fela will be posthumously honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Grammy Awards, making him the first African musician to receive the distinction, according to the BBC.

The award recognizes Fela’s far-reaching impact on music, culture, and political expression across the world. As the undisputed creator of Afrobeat, his bold sound, philosophy, and activism have shaped generations of artists in Africa and beyond.

Reacting to the announcement, Fela’s son and fellow Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, described the honor as deeply emotional and symbolic.

“Fela has lived in the hearts of the people for a very long time. Now the Grammys have recognized that, and it feels like a double victory. It brings balance to the Fela story,” he said.

Fela’s former manager and longtime associate, Rikki Stein, also welcomed the recognition, describing it as long overdue.

“Africa hasn’t historically ranked high in their interests, but I think that is changing now,” Stein noted.

The BBC observed that the honor comes amid growing global attention on African music, driven largely by the worldwide success of Afrobeats—a genre deeply rooted in Fela’s groundbreaking work. This shift was further reflected in the Grammys’ introduction of the Best African Performance category in 2024.

Family members, friends, and close associates of the late musician are expected to attend the Grammy ceremony to receive the award on his behalf, celebrating a legacy that fused music with political resistance and cultural pride.

Beyond his artistry, Fela was a fierce critic of corruption, military rule, and social injustice in Nigeria. He consistently used his music as a vehicle for protest, a stance that frequently brought him into conflict with successive military governments.

That confrontation peaked in 1977 following the release of his protest song Zombie, when soldiers invaded and destroyed his Lagos commune, the Kalakuta Republic. The attack led to the death of his mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, who later died from injuries sustained during the raid.

Rather than retreat, Fela intensified his resistance, famously carrying his mother’s coffin to government offices and releasing Coffin for Head of State, transforming personal loss into a powerful political statement.

Nearly 30 years after his death, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award stands as a historic acknowledgement of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s enduring influence—not only as a musical innovator, but as a fearless global symbol of resistance, justice, and African identity.
